My only keelback, my only snake, was found dead this morning (christmas morning). :( There was 2 out of 4 guppies in the water bowl, 1 guppie on the bedding, and 1 gone.

So I have no idea what happend, but he's definately dead.

Were going to LLLreptiles tommorrow and my grampa refuses not to buy me a new snake.

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost a snake on christmas... I'm sorry to hear that you lost your snake period. My only advice would be to stay away from keelbacks as your only snake for the sheer reason that most of them are imported and are chock full of parasites and have a very high risk of suddenly dying on you like that. Go with something simple and CB and you will hopefully have much better luck and will get to watch a snake grow up big and strong, and hopefully enjoy his company for years :)

This is why I hope to further to progress of the striped keelbacks as pets!

Sucks to not know why he died. Temps were ok, maybe he was sick when i bought him. I bought him about 4 weeks ago from Petco.

Just to clarify, garter snakes do not eat crickets, and neither do keelbacks, right?

Because at petco they have crickets in all the snake tanks.

Most of those large pet outlets have very little knowledge about the reptiles they sell. In and out the door seems to be the goal. It's a shame since there are a lot of good animals suffering bacause of uninformed sellers.

Exactly what Steve just said.

I have a hard time with Petco...

They sell Iguanas as "disposable" pets.

that is where I got my 3rd Iguana... Petco! Never did the associate ask me, if I knew anything about them. Just put one in the box & that was it.

Luckily, I know alot about Iguana's and care for them. Rocky will be turning one with me in a few days!

that is just sad how they don't know anything about animals!!! BUT they sell them! ugh

Yet if you tell them that you are buying a mouse as a feeder, they wig out.

they make you fill out a form.. when you buy any live pets there. Even mice.
I had to get one once..

Been there, done that. It was the main reason I started rasing my own.

Sorry for your loss, Austin. :(
Now I'm going to check on all my snakes, as this is the 4th death I've read about today. I'm getting a bit paranoid..........

yeh, I don't really want another snake. After having this snake, i feel like they're not really for me. The death did not influence this decision at all. So I'm going to pick up a few dart frogs tommorrow instead.

I'm not normally too overprotective. I'm used to not seeing them much at this time of year, but after all I read yesterday, I made sure I poked around in the carefresh till they all skittered out, just to be sure!;)

I'm sorry, Austin. When you are ready for another snake, you'll know. Maybe tell your grandpa that when you're ready, you'd like to get a snake from a reputable source to hopefully avoid this type of problem in the future. He should understand that. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I got Poison dart frog instead. My grampa understood, all he wanted to do was make me happy, so he didn't care what I got.

Yeah when I'm ready for a snake again, I think I'll stick with a real garter, or corn, instead of a keelback.
