OK, I have asked one of our knowledgeable monitors and he sadly had no information. :(
So to you all I ask;
Do you have
know where I can get
or are working on
some sort of data collection on your herps?
Im looking for some sort of direction as to what would be need to track my snakes. Some ideas I have are;
1. Taxonomy - snake, lizard, etc.
2. Picture ...
3. Genus - Thamnophis
4. Species epithet sirtalis
5. Subspecies - T. s. tetrataenia
6. Common Name or Synonym - San Francisco Garter
7. Sex if known
8. Date acquired 2008
9. Location or territory
10. Reference information
11. Notes -
12. Health
13. Feeding cycle
14. Food type
15. Temperament
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. If this works I would even be willing to share

It sounds as though you already have some pretty good working ideas there, Michael. I keep similar notes/records on index cards.
I'm not quite clear though, what exactly is your question?

That looks like a good list. Weight and length, shed date, meds, vet. dates, illness dates. just off the top of my head. Since there's no hair up there. I use an excel spead sheet and paste a photo in. I've also made one on MS Publisher.

There is a data storage system aimed at reptile enthusiasts, I can't find the link but try Googling "degei husbandry".

I think I'll try the index cards. Or something. Thanks for the information.:o

I must ask, Michael.... who was the 'monitor' you asked initially? It's always best (in my view) to address your questions to the whole forum. You receive a much more informed and balanced view that way.:)

I agree, the software does seem too complex for easy and rapid use.... that's why I use index cards.:)

Additional things to track aside from the snake stats and the location itself is: What was the behavior or state of the snake when you found it, what specific terrain, what time of day, weather, temperature, humidity, etc. These are vital in tracking habitat preferences as well as monitoring possible migrations and/or nesting or over-wintering sites.

I use notebooks, I write down every feeding, and any other info I feel important, especially info about new animals and where I got them. Occasionally a weight or length gets recorded too.
I usually have a good idea as to the aproximate year and month of what every it is I am looking for, so that makes it fairly easy to find info. Mostly it just helps me remember if its time to feed each animal yet- sometimes its hard to remember who all ate this week. I use many abbreviations to keep it quick.
I started a computor file on accel a while back for basic info on all my animals (when and where I got them, sex, weight and length...) but have yet to finish going page by page through my 4 notebooks full of records.

I agree it is important to track the buggers as I start to grow my collection and you certainly would need something to help remember whose who and when did I feed what to which one .. slugs or salmon
worm or guppies. This is the main reasoning I what to create something along this idea.
So if you have 4 notebooks full of information isnt it hard to locate a note? Thus the use of Access.

I'm doing my own database in access as well. I find I'm adept enough to design something that isn't complex, but is thorough enough, and I can add or remove fields as I go, refining what works. So far, I just have snake names (first names, not genus species :) ) Weight, length, if they ate, were they assist fed, how much they ate, and if they shed. I'd take a screenshot of my simple form but don't know how. I had a piece of the table pasted in, but that didn't come out right in the post.

Stephi, you could take a pic of the screen with your camera. :)
Michael, I would love to have a computor out in the reptile building, but I dont- so I use notepads because I can scribble it down as I go. I could transfer it over later, but that just makes more work.
I do want to finish my accel file on all the animals, however, to show all basic info on each animal- when and where aquired, size, sex, and other info like that. Possibly I will add another document for tracking any reproduction.
Other than that kind of info, it is not too often that I need to look something up that is more than a month or so in the past, so I dont spend too much time digging through records. It is ultra rare to have to dig into one of the first 3 books. The main thing is, at least I know its there somewhere (kinda like the stuff in my file cabinet, haha).
I am getting more organized as I go, but I have some work to do- but at least my animals are in order. :)
