View Full Version : Rhea's garters and the occasional other beast
drache

recently I've been taking pics of some of the garters here and there
they're not great pictures, and my domestic efforts have been lax, particularly as far as glass goes
but heck, it's more about showing the snakes anyway
my only big girls out right now are Thing and Sammy, and Sammy's been very much in the background, with Thing being more active and out front

here he is with Ember, the little flame from Tina

Sure sounds that way.
drache
12-19-2008, 05:21 AM
Is Ember related to Masubius?
if Masubius came from Tina, then they're siblings
btw - Ember is my current top escape artist
I'm pretty sure, I've got him permanently confined now, but he's good at finding the way out if there is one
thankfully he's never gone far and I've always found him before he went missing - like: what's that bright red thing over there? oh wow - him again
he's taught me a lot and I am really thankful that I found him before the cats did every time

Can anyone tell me, After looking at Rheas pictures, can this possibly be a Maritime Garter Snake or just a variation of an eastern.
Range appears to include New York State.

missed your post, Reed
Jade, the female from you, is still outside
I wanted to see whether I can get him to mate with both females, and my sense is that he's more chummy with Jade, so I wanted to give Chloe some time with him first
I will probably bring Jade in before the end of the year

Wow! Rhea, Chloe looks great!! For those that don't know, Rhea, Mikihaila and Jeff stopped by on the way back from Niagra last year, and I gave them a couple of snakes. Unfortunatly Jasper has passed away, but chloe looks like she is doing just fine. Hope for some babies. This pittyful little beat up thing :( is Chloe the day she was found next to the pool. Looks like she has a pretty good home now.

I have been so goofing off today, and you guys get to see the results
Thing shed this morning and so I had to take some pics
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3405/3177544330_bced2b493c_b.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/3177544352_28e5b93024_b.jpg
then I decided to try an experiment and put Whizzy and Slither, the other two parietalis, who'd been taken out of brumation a couple of days ago, in a fresh tank, and to add Thing once she was done shedding
Whizzy and Thing have housed together off and on since infancy
when I first put Thing into the enclosure, both of the others went nuts a little
then a bunch of stuff happened in relatively quick succession - every time I came back up after loading pics, the scene had changed
first it was the girls hanging out
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3309/3177544362_63aa690b80_b.jpg
then the girls kind of chilled and he was very active
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3508/3177544370_22a22e7dbb_b.jpg
next time I look he's with Whizzy
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3097/3177544384_016aee215d_b.jpg
so, I thought this was pretty much it

Ooooh, Layla is gorgeous!!! Thing looks great all shiny & new, too :)
drache
01-07-2009, 01:09 PM
in the meantime the internet crashed on my computer, but the saga continues
yes
next time I look, Thing's out of the cave, and Slither getting very twitchy all over her, and you're only being spared the blow-by-blow pictorial, because I severely underexposed those pics, whereupon I overexposed the next batch a little to compensate
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3082/3177611006_cfa8061fed_b.jpg
now that seems pretty clear
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3334/3176780489_713abdfc45_b.jpg
he was pretty firmly attached, while she was whipping around all over the place
and now it's all over - a quickie, I guess

you know how it is - they needed a home and the one had room for buddies
the funny thing is - they have several of everything in their tank and they always end up all snugly crammed together in the same flowerpot hide

so I thought, I'd throw some roach pics
I do have hissers too and b. dubia, but since you're all familiar with those at this point, I thought I'd show some of my blaberus species, since they have such beautiful shiny wings
this is a blaberus craniifer - death's head roach, and I could not get a shot from on top, but they are shiny and black
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/3237090297_cbb478b318_b.jpg

thank you very much for your wonderful compliments
it's all coming back to me now . . .
. . . I have a degree in fine arts photography
I kind of forgot, because it's never yielded me any income, and it seems like another life
back then I took photos of nude people, landscapes, drug addicts, and musicians - mostly - and I spent a lot of time in the dark room, feeling very alchemical
I was just never much into colour photography back then, so this is new

okay - sorry - it's not a garter
but he's very attractive, and sweet, and it looks like he'll stay, since our other cats haven't acted much put out over it
Mikhaila has been grooming him a lot, because he tends towards mats, but since he doesn't mind the grooming, it's not such a big deal
we only adopted him yesterday and named him Tundra
the first photo is the only one that shows his furry feet

he's a little shy and cautious, but very friendly - doesn't seem particularly afraid of our other cats either

thanks for looking
considering it's the first day, things are going pretty well
he's hiding a lot, and our cats are giving him the stare and us the hiss 'n growl
Mikhaila is grooming all his loose hair and mats out, so he'll be loosing that foreign smell pretty quickly, and once he smells like home, I doubt there'll be much of a problem
the frogs are very cute - and the croaking they do is really cool

the other flame is skittish - really hard to catch, hence the photo quality
she did also take pinky strip off a plate, but a bit more tentatively
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3577/3676203783_10eae27f07_b.jpg
this girl is amazing and I'm thinking of naming her Mango for the dorsal stripe and then some
she grabs pinky strip of my tongs like food is going out of style
and then she looks like this (again - lousy photo)

I've never seen a baby pack it in like this, it's quite something to behold
I am really happy with these guys

That first one - the anerythrystic parietalis male - looks like a tire tread on a road bicycle to me. I know that's not very romantic, but it's the first thing I thought of looking at the picture. I'd probably end up calling him Schwinn - or maybe Bianchi, that's a bit classier.

thanks - those are fun names
I think I'll go with Schwinn for him, because he's too dark to be a Bianchi
oh good - one down, three or so to go
I do think Mango will be good for the nebraska
and I'm thinking Topa for the myrtle beach flame, because her colours remind me of the pink moment over the Topa Topa bluffs, which I always thought it was more orange than pink (let's see who gets that reference)
so there's really only two to go - the melanistic male and the other flame

I need to take new photos of the babies - they've grown
meanwhile I've got four new snakes
they have come to me from a friend beset by hardship
here's the male fitchi

the female

and I got two female easterns, one of whom does some amazing bluff display, which I'll try to photograph some time in the future; but here she is non-pissy
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2456/3981695908_f861702ff3_b.jpg
the other eastern is very mellow and I think she's quite beautiful

not this time
the idea of shipping them out again just seemed a bit too much, so I talked both Shannon and myself into a couple more than we had planned on
I am very happy that I am keeping these
once I realized that they were special to my friend, I decided to keep the easterns anyway, but I'd not known that they were so attractive as well
the fitchis were slated to become a science classroom display during the schoolyear, but when I saw them I could not let them go; besides, they are smallish snakes, and I decided to send a pair of more beefy young marcis to the science classroom instead

The Fitchi (Is that species, phase or...?) is amazing! I love him. Your other snakes are pretty too. The "currently non-pissy" female reminds me of a temporary rescue eastern I had for a couple weeks over the summer. (Mine had less red of course ).

Is that one melanistic or just different? Are most valley garters that black?
Do you have a thread with pictures of the babies anywhere? I, tragically, :( don't have space for another garter, but I'd still love look. :)

don't know what the others look like, but mine have a pattern on top that's quite black, their bellies being a turquoisey slate with orange speckles at the tail end
they are also amazingly small and delicate for adults, and again - I have not sufficiently read up on the species to know whether that's representative, but even the female is small enough that I don't feel bad keeping the pair of them in a 10G tank for a while - very different from my comparatively massive parietalis
Do you have current pics of the flame from Tina?
I will work on that before I send the camera in (needs a cleaning urgently)

thats a normal valley garter. I used to have a female almost 36" long!! my females are around 24-26 inches at this time. their babies are similar in size to red spots, around 8 inches long when born. I had 2 females give birth to 16 babies!

so is 36" unusually large for them?
my female is a proven breeder, and I haven't measured her, but she seems smaller than my '08 florida blue female sirtalis - smaller than many of my males
Yay! I am curious to see how he looks. :D
okay - here's a quick one
and sorry - it's a bit blurry, so I'm not making it big
you're probably mostly interested in the colour, and I must say - in a close-up it's almost a bit too much
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3516/3987655923_a3a0a95ba7.jpg
depending on your monitor he may appear a bit brighter than he is, but he's pretty damn red
that tail sticking out to the right belongs to another snake
he's still young, but I'm tempted to put him with a female to see what he does

36" is a rather large one, however a few years back a 48" female was found in the desert area in Idaho. I believe she was sent to Scott Felzer, but she passed away...that was a huge one. most of the females I have average around 24-26" next spring I will be looking for a couple Utah females....my Utah male is over 24" himself.

she used to belong to another forum member who couldn't keep her snakes any more due to adverse circumstances
I found homes for her other ones, but this one I kept, and not just because I think she's pretty - she is also one of the most "out-going" snakes ever
