i have a question
how many years of selective flame breeding did it take to get that male 90% red
snakeman
12-16-2008, 05:05 PM
I bought it off of scott Felzer. The parents were just regular flames.Sometimes you just get lucky. It looked normal as a baby.

They were actually sent legally. It was the worst experience I ever went thru.

im guessing a whole ton of paper work that took maybe a couple weeks to get processed
snakeman
12-16-2008, 06:16 PM
I had to do the paperwork in newark ,nj where I picked them up.They kept sending me back and forth between these two officesthat were about a ten minute drive apart thru crazy traffic. All in all it took about four hours to get it done.

James is not a big fan of albinos..... I have seen that photo before.....can't wait til I can get my orange to breed with an albino!!!!

I see. I dare say there is a demand for that. Not really my thing though, Tom. Good luck with the breeding anyway.:)

Well ,Keeping a normal garter is pointless to me.I can find 50 of them down the street!

I'm not 'having a go' Tom... I'm just not an albino fan... I love how red Flames are naturally. To each his own, etc.:)

I doubt there will be many available this year.If I get any i will probally hold them all back.I imagine Scott won't have more than a handful of them. He'll probally hold his back too!

I was'nt taking offence.I have enough flames now.I want to have one of every phase of eastern possible. If you don't like albinos,Then you will really hate my blizzards when they come out 2010 ish!
adamanteus
12-18-2008, 05:56 PM
Sorry Tom, but yes, I will probably hate your Blizzards! I truly hope that Garters never go down the same path as Corns... where these weird artificial 'morphs' are all the rage and normal 'natural' Garters are disregarded.
Of course it's exciting to find the odd abherrent coloured example...... I just hate the whole 'Creamsicle-Strawberry-Vanilla-Fudge-Snow Cone' thing. Maybe it's just me, but I love Garters as nature intended.
Good luck with the breeding though, I wouldn't try to force my views on anyone else.
ssssnakeluvr
12-18-2008, 06:07 PM
I love them both, normals and morphs..... hopefully they won't go hogwild like with the corns....just too darn many morphs......
adamanteus
12-18-2008, 06:12 PM
In my view there is nothing more beautiful than a 'normal' radix (for example)... well defined checkered pattern, light green interstitial skin, orange dorsal stripe bordered with black. I wouldn't want to change that by making it all white or all black.
If Garters ever down the Corn Snake route (heaven forbid!) I will switch to another genus of choice.
ssssnakeluvr
12-18-2008, 06:14 PM
normal ones have always fascinated me...I remember looking in snake books at all the species I could find....I like the morphs...but want to work with normals as much as or maybe a little more!! I want every garter snake species!!!!!

I'm the same, Don! If I want variety I would look to ordinoides, where variety is natural. There is serious study to be done there.... why so much variety in colour and pattern, even within a single litter? It doesn't happen in other Garters. To me that's far more interesting and challenging that creating yet another colourless snake.

I agree James, My first "love" (via picture) was a normal radix, and a normal eastern black neck and Puget.
My albinos came to me as non feeders, but have grown on me.
I will not deceive anyone, Snowflake is an Eastern, and She is going to be bred with Masubius my flame with the same goal in mind.
I can buy a lot of feed and bedding with the sale of offspring from those two.
The color variations offered by nature alone are captivating. Especially since I have only one species on my land, Sirtalis Sirtalis, the "common" eastern.
Just last summer alone, I found one with a cream stripe, one with orange stripes, one that is rusty with dark maroon spots, etc..
But it sure is fun to breed the aberrant colors and see what happens next.
My favourite lot, the "Gang" that are in my living room, the ones that get daily interaction, are all common, normal everyday specimens I found in the yard.
