My name is Deborah, when I get a new interest, I usually join a new forum to learn all I can by reading and asking questions.

I am a member of several snake forums, and a parrot forum so far. I also mod on Ball Python Breeder - Welcome to RCReptiles.com - Professional Breeder of Ball Python Morphs (http://www.rcreptiles.com), a forum dedicated to Ball Pythons.

While, what led me here wasn't a great event, I never would have learned of this forum otherwise..so out of dirt something beautiful can grow! :)

I have a whole hoste of BPs, a gecko:Duchess, a corn: Ruby, a bullsnake: Bully and a Quaker Parrot: Bam-Bam.

Now I want to learn about garters!;)

I was looking at (forgets name) and she had a bucket load of pics of snakes and the BLUE one was the one that caught me. I would love one purely as a display animal along with my bull snake, corn and gecko.

Thanks for the welcome!

"Expert???" Hush before you bring the entire BP community down on me! :D

I am new to the game, but no novice. There's still plenty to learn, but I will share whatever I know with you all. If I don't know, I have quite a few friends that do know more than I.

Thanks for the welcome!:)

:) Fair enough :)

Btw, I think they make great display animals because they're so active and curious about their surroundings... but go ahead and get two :D They co-habitate very nicely, take up about the same space, and it ups your odds that at least one of them will be out and about :)

Hello. I have just looked at the links and the Ball Pythons are all very nice looking. It still surprises me that a snake i have not paid much attension to has so many colour variations. Untill recently i had not realised how many geart varieties of corn snake there were.
You will find lots of great Garters here, hope you enjoy them.

Thanks all! I just got back in town. I went for a quick (can a 9 hour drive be quick??) visit to Indianapolis to see my grandson play basketball and pick up my daughter's dining room table (that she gave me).

I'm back! :)

If you are referring to BPs, I have quite a few of those but for display purposes, I have a Okee Corn and Bull snake. I breed Bps.

Someone said that garters can live together? This is news to me. Are they bitey?

Yes they can live together and it depends on the snake if it's bitey. :)

Just don't mix species if the snakes are of different sex. Oh and wandering garters can be cannibalistic, if there's a big size difference between two individuals, and with the other species you need to keep an eye on them when you're feeding them.

What Stefan said about the individuality, I have 2 out of uh lost count? that are "nippy" but compared to a BP garter bites are NOTHING.

All of our garters have roommates.

If your fingers smell of fish or worm or pinky, any garter may nip at you.

My BP on the other hand, he's nearly 4 feet long and about an inch and a half girth, when he strikes (always during feeding) it smarts.

As Stefan said, Garters of similar size are quite safe to keep in groups, Deborah. Accidental cannibalism isn't unheard of, but is more common in the very young. Deliberate cannibalism isn't so rare in T. e. vagrans, so maybe best to keep these singly.
As for being bitey.... in my experience bites are always motivated by the feeding response.:)

i agree every garter snake has a different temperment i have only been bitten a couple times by my largest girl but my fingers were covered in worm slime

and just an example of diferent temperment within the same sub species i once found 2 babies not 2 feet from eachother one kept trying to bite me and the other just musked

oh and welcome to the forum

I should just add that my experience is limited to captive specimens only. I've never seen a Garter in the wild. (yet)
