Terribly sorry to hear about Chomper :( Glad to hear peoples hearts went out to you. I know and understand Littlefoot will never be Chomper nor will he replace him. But he will become a part of your family n well taken care of I'm sure.

Next week, I am glad I called the vendor, he was going to ship a wild caught adult! I said absolutely not, I want a hatchling. So I would rather wait for the hatchling and get a fresh new life and not an adult that was free until last week.
Made more improvements.. Live grass.
I hacked up my lawn, but we have live grass in there.

As of yesterday Chomper was laid to rest, he lost the battle.
His illness was a case of terminal gout brought on by long term low level dehydration.
The blood work was done and his uric acid levels were off the charts.
He will be missed.
Oh no, not Chomper!
So sorry Wayne. We'll miss him.:(

My babies arrived today, Littlefoot is bashful and Cera is bold.
I have already observed both of them snacking on the assorted wild bugs found in my natural vivarium type enclosure.
Fresh out of the shipping box, warming up.

Wayne I have been following this thread as long as I have been on this site and I must thank you for taking the time to share all of the ups and downs especially this last round with the loss of Chomper and the addition of Littlefoot and Cera. I am amazed at the love and dedication you put into all of your animals and then taking the time to bring us along on the ride, it is truly inspiring. I always look forward to your updates on all of your animals. Best wishes with the little ones!

My favourite two quotes of the day, regarding the video..
I had to double, triple check to see if it was a cage or somewhere outside on your property!
I had to stop and think whether that was shot outside or in your enclosure!

If they are at all like Chomper was, they will grow out of it.
Like almost any baby reptile, they know they are easy prey for birds and such, so they are really scared right now, one day when they get big enough to eat the birds, the fright reflex goes away.

While recording candid footage of my baby Savannah Monitors today I captured a rare moment that I would like to share.
In this sequence you can clearly see Littlefoot walk up and rest his head on Cera, and then stroke her back with his left hand.
Sorry for the poor video quality, I am saving up to get a HD camera so these moments can be of the highest quality.

As soon as I get this footage edited better, I have a clip of Littlefoot "surfing" on the grass as if he was swimming.

The intelligence and capacity for learning with these animals is just amazing, borderline primate level intelligence. It had already been proven they can count.
I have been speaking with Dr. Gordon M. Burghardt at the University of Tennessee, and I find it interesting that the two animals he studies the most are African Monitor Lizards and Thamnophis, His specialty is Bio-Psychology and his primary studies are learning and problem solving.

Easy, keep hot, use sand, offer UVB, feed it bugs.
as with any lizard, the more space you offer it, the better.
Unlike snakes, Lizards like to run and play, so the more space you can provide, the better.
That species lives in the Nevada deserts, so hot and sandy would be the most likely best choice for a happy animal.

I have a 4 foot 20" x 20" aquarium which is currently housing fish but I am thinking of replacing one of the light tubes with a UV tube and a statted heat mat at one end.
infernalis
04-23-2012, 08:44 AM
I would put a heat matt at one end, and a basking lamp at the other.

Ok! If I decide to do it that's the way Ill go. As a rule I dislike using aquariums for snakes and lizards but I may make an acception here. The tank is to good to get rid of and would cost a fortune to replace. It will do as a stop gap until I can get something else sorted.

Growth has been around an inch a week.
They are mature and growth will begin to slow down in a couple more months, But they will never look like Chomper did.
His care was critically flawed, so he was fat and lethargic. These two should remain skinny and look like they do in the wild.
