Just a brief introduction. My name is Kris, my family and I live in eastern Iowa. I have three children ages 10, 8 and 5. Just to set the record straight I do not want a snake. However my kids's do.. shudder shudder shudder.... more of a dog person myself.

Anyway's, after some dicussion about who will care for the said snake, where it would be kept ect ect ect. we started looking into what kind of snake. I like the bright orange/red of corn snakes however it's illegal to house them within our city limits. No constrictors allowed, wich led us to garter snakes.

So without further ado.. It's nice to meet you all and I suspect I'll be asking a ton of newbie questions.:)

Hello Kris,welcome to the forum.:)

Garter snakes have a way of causing folks to fall in love with them;)

They have a lot more personality than many other species.:D

Please don't hesitate to ask anything you would like, folks here are the friendliest on the net, and most knowledgeable as well.

Thanks all. Honestly I'm not sure where the best place to start is. I've got several fish tanks that could be used to house a snake.... as for what needs to go in the tanks I'm not sure.:)

We have one member who joined us mere months ago, had not a snakie in her house.

She's got more snakes now than quite a few of us already:D

It only takes one to "infect" you, before you know it your freezer is full of pinky mice, your searching for guppies and huntin' night crawlers.

Pssst. Garter snakes come in red and orange also... (oops the secret is out)

With three kids, four dogs, three cats, two aquariums and a fish pond.. I don't see my house being overrun by snakes :)
I thinking I like the Puget Sound garter.. then there was another one that was pretty I'll have to go look again LOL
