Hi. My name is Brook. I live in western New York....right now. In the next week we'll be moving to Washington state. I joined this site almost a year ago, but puters died and the bookmark along with them. I'm back now and plan on it staying that way. I just want to let you know how much I like this site. It's very informative and not full of stupid leading stupid just waiting for the arguments to come. I don't have too much experience with garters, but my boyfriend and I have been researching them for about 2 years now. We kept a few w/c last spring and released them back where we found them in August. It was a fun experience. We got an albino checkered garter from BHB reptiles about a month ago. We're enjoying her very much. We have a large collection of various snake and lizard species......and my Chilean rose hair tarantula. lol I've always been fascinated with reptiles and am getting my 7 year old daughter to see the wonder in them also. Anyway, It's nice to meet you all. We'll talk soon.
Welcome from Michigan, Brook. It's great to see someone that takes the time to find out information about a reptile before getting one. Too many times it starts out with an impulse purchase and then scrambling to find out how to take care of it. Though, I don't really have room to talk since my first garter was a w/c that I found.

Yes. I see this a lot. And in order to not follow in the footsteps of these people I do research on every animal I am even semi interested in. Thankfully I didn't have to impulse buy here. Our reptile shop let us put a deposit down, get the enclosure ready, and then come back for the animal. I hope I can find a place like that in Washington.
I have one reptile that was a COMPLETE impulse buy.....a Burton's legless lizard. I could not, and still can't, find much info on these guys, so I had to go off of what I could dig up about Australia's climate and the few research papers I found online. I've had the little guy for over a year now and he's a happy camper.

Hi, from Oregon, Brook :)
Greetings from the UK! Whoa, that legless lizard is amazing...slightly confuzzled by one thing, though:
If it's legless, what makes it a lizard rather than a snake?

Movable eyelids, external ear openings, fixed mandible, more 'rigid' body.... and loads of other less obvious stuff.:)

What he said....lol. Except not all legless lizards (or even lizards with legs) have eyelids. My legless lizard and my Tokay gecko are lidless like snakes. It's very easy to tell the difference between snake and legless lizard just by looking at them......as long as you're paying attention. There's actually only two similarities my LL has to snakes. He swallows his food whole and he has no legs. lol
