Could you house a garter with a similarly-sized corn snake?

No. Different care requirements. Garters are diurnal and require UV lighting, corns are nocturnal and too much UV light can be harmful to their eyes. That is just a singular aspect to consider.

Of course...that is not an "absolute". I imagine with enough care and consideration for the individual species' needs it *could* be done. But I wouldn't recommend it, nor would I be inclined to try it.

As well...an adult corn gets much larger than an adult garter in *most* cases. Corns aren't exactly ophiophagus by nature, but they have been known to be opportunistic and eat other snakes...

In the wild, Corns are known to consume Anoles and other smaller reptiles, so a Garter would be considered a tasty snack.

also, wandering garters have been known to eat lizards...wouldn't want to risk a corn snake lunch for the garter either. found this out the hard way, tossed some feeder lizards in a tank (was short on cages at the time) with some wandering garters....lizards were supposed to be for my night snakes....came in later, found a fat large wandering garter and no lizards!!!

My checkereds and wanderings will eat lizards and geckos. Heck. I have a friend who has given me two young checkereds from their yard that would ONLY eat Mediterranean Geckos until I was able to scent switch them from geckos to fish. That's right. Scent the fish with the geckos. LOL!! The strangest thing.

"Require" is a relative term. Diurnal species do better with a UV light source. It may not be a "requirement" in the sense that they can't digest or survive without one such as with lizards...but UV light is beneficial to any diurnal species, including coachwhips, racers and patchnose...

Any species that is found basking during the day in direct sunlight will benefit from an ultraviolet lightsource in captivity...

Just my humble opinion...

But yea...waking up to one fat snake instead of two would be my primary concern as well...
