are you thinking that a dekay is a type of garter? I may be reading it wrong. But, a dekay snake is not a type of garter.

We have 6 adult Dekayi snakes, and a batch of babies. Love them all:D

Dekayi snakes are super easy.
It may take it a little while to settle in.
What I suggest to people is to go outside and yank up some fresh grass, use it for your first substrate, (Makes the snake feel more at home, I guess)
Can you find any garden slugs where you live?? They just love slugs.
The only other food is worms, Many of ours eat worms readily....
More later, The kids are giving me a hard time, and it's a school night.
Post something back, that will put this back into my unread post column, So I don't forget.

well hes settling in nicely.. im redoing his 10g here tomorrow... Friday hopefully ill have pics woohoo.. its sooo small compared to the 10g tank it lives in now.. I was thinking about letting it go but it got down to 23 here last night and night before last and it will tonight as well... So it'll have to stay the winter in.. LUCKY snake and me as well lol.. Even our out side cat scratched at the door to be let in and she NEVER comes in!!!! So it must really be cold out..

From my observations, the males of this species are usually around 12 inches, and the females around 18 inches.
The females of our collection are all twice the diameter of the males as well.
An adult female will be about as big around as a size 8 ring finger.
The tail taper rule also applies to Dekayi snakes.
Hope that helps.
I assume IT's eating??
