Like others, I thought about creating a new thread in which I can post 'regularly' updates on my snakes. So here it is
Since a few weeks I have some great additions: Thamnophis eques
cuitzeoensis. So I certainly wanted to share some pictures of them with you...

Not certain if he would stay or explore...
http://gallery.dierenparadijs.be/data/500/medium/DSC_1062_klein.jpg
And a few pictures in the enclosure...

And also quite recently, I took both atratus and hammondii together and put them in a bigger enclosure... This worked out great till now, it's the first time I see the hammondii that much. Only the atratus are a but skittish at the moment, because they were not used to people passing. So also a few pics of them :)

lovely, Hans
I'm starting to think we should have a section for member's snake threads - sort of like the best threads section
that way we can just go there and visit each others' snakes
I so very much covet your atratus btw

I like the idea, Rhea... but then again, the gallery can be something like that ( although I don't use the gallery to post my pics ). But still I like the idea of havind it in the forum.

hmmm, those concinnus' look mighty fine. I went from three, to five, now bring here, I may have to follow suit and have "snake rooms" set up... So much for the home office.

Beautiful snakes. Is one of the concinnuses (in the last picture) lacking red? Is that common?
Snaky
10-20-2008, 09:33 AM
Thanks again :)
Yes, 1 of my concinnus is lacking red. I've not seen it much.. don't know if anybody breed them for this morph. I'm also not selective breeding him, maybe I'll hold 1 baby next year, but I'll see. I just like that they all 3 have different colors

I like the idea, Rhea... but then again, the gallery can be something like that ( although I don't use the gallery to post my pics ). But still I like the idea of having it in the forum.
I don't use the gallery either because it limits my picture size to something really small
when the threads are in the forum, one can automatically see when new stuff has been added, whereas in the gallery one needs to go look
also - there are enough of these threads going now to make them a category
I've been thinking of starting one myself
they're more interactive too

It's been a long time since I posted here. But winter is finally over and I took out my snakes on 17/01. On 28/01 I turned on the lights for the first time and already after 1 hour it was bingo for the hammondii:
http://gallery.dierenparadijs.be/data/500/medium/DSC_4090_klein.jpg
http://gallery.dierenparadijs.be/data/500/medium/DSC_4094_-_cropped_klein.jpg
Then animals didn't shet or hadn't eaten yet. Only the temperature had rised till about 20°C during the day. In the meanwhile I already also saw matings in the terrestris.
Still from the mating, but the female tried to trow of the male :D.

Lol, thanks for the great reactions! When I have some time, I'll post some new pictures of the others to.
Today I will be going to the vet though. The orange concinnus seems to not be able to poo and have become very big since the last feeding ( couple of days ago ). So hopefully it will not be much, but going anyway.
@greg: Yes indeed, maybe it will show up in the offspring of your couple ;)

I wonder -If it is an intestinal blockage at the stomach exit then it could show a genetic trait after what happened to Xena. Hope they can fix your girl for you. Fingers crossed for her.
Snaky
04-22-2009, 12:56 AM
Actually she is not that long at the university, 3 weeks now. She was treated by the vet for a respitory infection together with an intestinal problem. She produced a lot of stomach fluids without reason, but indeed it might be related with the problem you had, and it's thatefor that she is at the university. The treatment for the stomach fluids was Primperan ( a general medecine to make that the intestins work correctly again ). But apparently it's going better now that she delivered the young. Fingers crossed indeed that she will be all better again.
Thanks for the reactions :)

I had indeed a lot of babies at a short time, it's because all snakes come out of brumation at the same time and they all mate a few weeks later. So I'll likely have this baby boom every year. :D
I hope for you that you'll have some nice babies when your checkered is old enough.

Just ping me if you need the email adres of Steven Bol. He introduced this bloodline of red morph and breeds each year with them. I've seen that the young one's I have have this coloration, not even after a few months. So I think it's not a dominant thread.

Yes, it's nicely yellow. That bloodline has a more yellow dorsal stripe :)

Thanks. I heard last year that he had them and I've been considering the option for quite a while now. Sadly, I can't fit any more snakes into my permanent collection at the moment. :(

There are pro's and con's, as always. You have to go especially to the room to see them, which is the biggest con for me. But I like it, I have a seperate room for me were I can do whatever I want and it gives boundaries. Two big pro's for me. ;)

Last wednesday 10/03 the other concinnus popped. The previous clutch of the other female was rather small, but she outdid herself.

I don't recall ever seeing less than 20 from my pair, (pair now gone) 50 at most, with a few stillborns, but those are some darn fine young you got there. Nice and thick and well developed compared to the tiny little ones I was getting. Nice rich colors too, and nice variation, especially with the stripes. Gongrats! Nice going!
I have to ask...
Any hint of lateral stripes on any of them? I always got a few like that, consistent with the population their parents came from.

I've heard from a reliable source about the difference in clutch sizes depending on the area the concinnus are coming from. I don't remember the details anymore though, but I believe this is true. My clutches ( and together with me a lot of people from Europe having the bloodline from Steven Bol ) are small (<15 often), but the young one's are bigger and thicker. But there is another bloodline circuling in Europe and clutches from that bloodline are indeed always >20, even higher.
I'll check it better when I have some time, but I've not seen the lateral stripes yet...

That's what I've been hearing too. Small clutch sizes. Snakes collected in SW Washington State, USA or NW Oregon State have always had large clutches for me. For a large female (70-120cm) clutches have always been 20-50 count but the offspring are definitely very small and require careful tending in order to thrive and some always fail and do not make it past 6 months old.
By contrast, an adult T. ordinoides collected in the same area and measuring only about 50cm will have only 5-7 young but they are much larger than the concinnus offspring and tough as nails, and never fail to thrive. Small clutches always, and always large young.
The result? There are so many ordinoides to be found here. I'm talking millions. Can't say that for concinnus. I think that the concinnus have more offspring but lose many if not all to predators (birds eat them) and failure to thrive.
