:rolleyes: oh well ... J just shed and Slithers seems to have decided that J smells like a girl ... oh dear!!! Rofl .... I need to get my hands on some females :rolleyes: so my red-blooded red-sided gets to vent his frustrations properly!!!

sometimes a male thamnophis will emit female pheromones... scientists are still unsure as to why exactly some males do it, but there is the hypothesis that they do it to trick other males in the mating ball so that the can slip in and breed the REAL female while all the others are concentrated on him.

I've observed it with all males; no females even present in the room.
Coincidentally, they were either new males to the group or recently "matured."

It could be an example of kin selection, which should be possible to determine based on the behavior of closely related individuals.
