Hi, my name is Maurisa and I'm new here (obviously) :D I've been checking out this forum for a while, and I finally decided to join. Yay me! I never really realized how beautiful garter snakes really are. They're actually pretty cute! I'm considering a garter, but I want to do this right! What is the best tank size for a full grown garter? The best substrate? I've heard a couple people on here use Carefresh, which kind of astounded me...but I just want to take the best care possible of a garter. Sorry for all the questions!!!

Welcome to a great forum, Maurica. In most cases a 20 gal long aquarium is fine for Garter snakes. The rule of thumb is the enclosure should be at a minimum, longer than the snake. As far as substrate goes, it's a matter of personal choice. I use aspen in most enclosures because it so easy to see where spot cleaning is needed. Avoid pine or cedar as the oils in them are toxic to snakes. Here's a link to the general care on this forum. http://www.thamnophis.com/caresheets/index.php?title=Garter_Snake_Care_Sheet

Hi Maurisa, I also like to use the aspen it's easy to see the poo and, it doesn't cost much. I like to clean Olive's tank once a week.Good luck finding your new baby.

Welcome Maurisa~ I use green carpet, a papertowel & carefresh... I see all the "poopies" easily. I am a clean neat freak. Garters are addicting... I started out with nothing(no garters), I have 3, soon 3 more. :D

Ok, sorry I haven't been on in a while, but I've been SOOO busy with three projects for school, and I've been in rehearsals for the drama club.....so it's been pretty hectic! No, I don't have other snakes...my dad had a salt-and-pepper king snake and fifty snapping turtles when he was a kid, though. He's such a turtle freak!! :) We found a little baby snapper in a parking lot. He's living in our 20 gallon aquarium downstairs, and he's growing every day!!! I'll probably get a garter in the spring when they all come out from hibernation. Unttil then...I can dream...:)
