I just got my new 55 gal tank for my garters.... and i have a few questions.....

1. the temps right now arfe 90 hot side 80 cool side.... is that too warm???
2. is a 55 gal big enough for 4 adult snakes? (3 females, 1 male)
3. there is a light inside the cage, should i be woried about them climbing on it and getting burned?
4. is it ok to have a live plant in there? i have no idea what kind it is.....

:D pics will com soon/eventually.... have to clean my room first lol:D

1. Yes, I'd lower them a bit.
2. I think so... unless they are really huge garters.
3. Yes.
4. I have some live plants... I just replace the soil with plain soil with no fertilizers in it. I don't know if there are dangerous plants to snakes??
:-)

AWESOME cage and top Shanley!!!! Very nice!!!! Can you remove that light and simply set it on top, on the outside, on one of the screens?

It's very nice Shanley! You and grandpa did a great job on that lid! I love your giraffe print, too. I have one with a mommy with two babies(one just slightly larger than the other)... don't know if that would actually happen in the real world, but I have two kids, so it works for me :)

What did you do here? Is that like a floating platform, which also provides shade/cover for the water? Is it a picture frame?

Having your light inside will cook the snakes.

The way it is set up, all heat is stored inside the tank, With the light outside, only radiant heat exists inside the cage.

Other than that, It is impressive. Looks cozy in there.:D

That's WONDERFUL, Shanley! Very very nice!

Yes, the light will burn your snakes. Put outside on screen.

Your plant will be fine. It has no thorns or any ruff things that can hurt your snakes.

The more tiers you have allowing your snakes to avail themselves to the height of the tank, the more snakes you can have.

thanks for all the repliesyeah the top is awesome:) I love it bc both the screens lift out individually and the whole top lifts off as well for cleaning:) but unf I cannot put the light directly on the screen...... it is just regular screen and it started smoking within 3 seconds...... but I turned off the inner light and now the temps are 78 and 82 lol not much of a temp gradient....... but o well...... i'm sure it will be better when my house coold down :) meadow LOVES it lol she actually climbed out and all the way up the monkey to the vent in the ist pic lol then she just sat there and stared at me till I turned around and offered her my hair lol :) the others just love the new hides and water dishes lolyes that is a picture frame :) I just put a piece of faberic in it loosly and made a frame of cardboard to fit in behind it and hold it in place :) then I just tied it up with fishing linewow typing on this phone is hard.... and it hurts my fingers...... i'll type more about it later........ meanwhile ASK ME MORE QUESTIONS!!!!!!!! lol

shanley would it be possible then to replace the screen on the hot side with metal screening so that you wont have the smoking problem and also my gosh you sure made that thing look like fun :D

You can probably just remove the light and go with room temps anyway. Also, in the past I've hung the heat light from a hook in the wall-- so it doesn't touch the screen, but still gets warmth into the tank. You can use a small aquarium hood just to light up the tank, too.

It looks great Shanley!

i use a small aquarium hood for my 10 gallon with the babies in it and the radiant heat off of the 15 watt bulb keep it between 78-80 degrees

Very nice Shanley. All my answers are same as Lori P's first reply. I'd get someone to help you put metal screen in place of the fabric screen, if you arent sure how to do it. Not too hard. A lamp in the cage is an accident waiting to happen.
Sure looks nice though. :)
