Beautiful snakes shannon!

so, some of your snakes are keelbacks? i just found out my "garter snake" bought from petco, is not actually a garter at all, but a striped keelback. and after some time of internet research, i find many people have these snakes and cant find much information about them.

do you know very much about them? do you know of a reliable web site with information about feeding/breeding/care/health/etc.?

maybe it would be a good idea to start a thread on this forum about these snakes, or has it been done already and i just havnt found it yet?

we've had several threads about people getting them as garters from petco
but they are not a thamnophis species, and that's really what this forum is about
however, it did just occur to me - don't we have a dekay thread?
perhaps we could have one thread for these beasts as well
I got three of them a couple of years ago and one of them is alive and well
very much like garters to keep, and in personality also

There is very little GOOD information out there on Xenochrophis. I have kept those also, with no long term success whatsoever. However, the keelback I have now is a totally different genus of snakes known as rhabdophis. many people do have the xenochrophis, and don't even know what they have. A good rule of thumb is that you can keep them a lot like a garter, only it should be more humid than you would keep garter snakes. Daily mistings and an absorbant substrate wouldn't hurt! Breeding right now would be my last concern, mainly because the "garter snakes" from petco are already in terrible shape between eing wild caught imports and petco's not-so-great care.... and IF you are extremely, extremely unbelieveably lucky, 6 months from now it might still be alive and well. I don't mean to sound pessimistic, it's just kind of been a standard with these snakes that even the ones that seem to be doing fantastic (the ones I had) drop dead! Foodwise, they like anything 'stinky and wet" much like a garter snake. Mine were eating salmon and trout, silversides, frog legs, earthworms and f/t pinkies.

Just thought I'd share three quick pictures. The first is of my carteret county erythristics het schuett albino. The male has really colored up, when I forst got him back in january he was brown with some small orange spots on his sides. and now the female has some red and orange tones that she did not have at all before, so it looks like they are both going to be really nice adults! Thanks again Scott!

Next is a crappy pic of the flame I caught last summer. She's suddenly really taken off for me, after fighting with me all winter about self-hibernating. She has tripled in size since January and gets better color with every shed.

Now here is my male infernalis, whom I have not yet revealed to the public!! I got him from Rhea!

I love all the pics! You have an absolutely beautiful collection.

I'm very fond of Casper - I've been looking for a light-phase cave ratsnake like that guy for a long time! I also love the keelbacks - so sorry to hear about the male. They are stunning animals.

And your Eastern blacknecks - WOW! I know you mentioned where you got them - was it Joanna? - is that a breeder or a hobbyist? If this person breeds Eastern blacknecks of this quality, I'd sure love to get in touch with her!

Thought I would take a moment's time to put in a little update that I have been majorly slacking on. Where do i even begin??? The erythristic water snake had her prelay shed... babies are expected ANY day now. Marcy the female checkered also had what i thought should have been prelay shed, but she still is eating???? And also here are some random photos from outside the otherday in the clematus flowers. First is a redsided baby from rhea, all 4 are now in shed and have easily doubled in size.

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll86/aSnakeLovinBabe/Snakes/Garters/468006.jpg

and then here is my granite checkered female, whom is the meanest garter I have ever met. Even meaner than my similis and that's saying a lot!!!

meadow ate the day before she gave birth... and she's a very irregular eater!!!

aSnakeLovinBabe
05-20-2009, 08:15 PM
well that's good to know... I was getting worried that maybe she was just fat since she's still eating. But i was looking at her on an empty stomach and I just don't see how she'd be that fat if she wasn't gravid... it's not like I overfeed!!! :D I am just so used to my girls not eating before birth, and she had her "prelay" shed over a week ago. (at least I think! I never saw them lock up)

The red water snake EXPLODED tonight. I've suddenly got 25 more snakes than I had yesterday, they are BIG, and most of them are RED!!!! 16 girls, 9 boys, no jellies or stillborns, deformed or runts!! A new thread coming later tonight with tons of piccies!!! :D

aSnakeLovinBabe
06-07-2009, 07:31 PM
okay. So I found a baby water snake this morning. one that I had no idea even existed, it is yet another girl. so now I have 26 babies, 17 of them, girls! She must have gotten away somehow when I was hastily collcting the young from the tub.

and far worse...

So I noticed yesterday that I didn't see Casper, my large 6 foot, very possibly closer to 7 foot, cave dwelling rat snake peeking out at me like usual. So I decided to be nosy and I found a completely empty cage. I am particularly stumped because i thought the bags of sand on the corners of the lid of this large tank were sufficient enough to keep him in. Guess not

The bad news is, there is now a large, particularly angry snake on the loose in our house and I can't find the sucker anywhere!!! I know this species can climb very well so believe me I have looked both up and down. I KNOW he's not in the snakeroom, I tore it apart. He had to have squeezed out under the rather large gap under the door. Problem is, directly next to this door, is our basement door, which also has a large gap underneath. I have good reason to beleive that Casper is in our gigantic basement, full of stuff to hide in and climb on, because our 5 cats would be going nuts if he was anywhere they could see. I know Casper, being so large is not slick enough to avoid the attention of the cats in the upper levels of the house... and the cats are not acting weird at all. I already searched my house yesterday and today, with NO luck. HOW does one lose a 6 foot snake? I'm going to try going down there with a flashlight at night to catch him cruising around in the dark. He is big so I know he can go a long time without any food but I am worried I'll never find him because he's a climber who can go ANYWHERE :(

I know all the tricks with sprinkling flour, and plastic bags crinkling and even bottle/jug traps with food, but I am not sure any of this will work in our gigantic, generally uninhabited basement.

aSnakeLovinBabe
06-10-2009, 07:19 PM
I have checked it every day since he went missing... He only has 2 hides, one on the left side, and the other is his water bowl which is hollow underneath and where he usually hid. The rest of the cage is bare except for a fake vine. I cleaned all day in the snakeroom. I also searched a bunch of boxes of junk in the basement. No sign of him!!! He's SO grounded!

Don't let him know you're mad until you get him back.
Say things like "I give up, you're the best hider" "You win, I can't find you"
"Mommies getting worried, please come out" See if any of those help.

I found Casper!! Tonight I was walking down the basement stairs for my daily check when I saw the shelf at the bottom had a bunch of liquor bottles knocked onto the floor. (unbroken thankfully) I knew it was him!! I frantically started searching the shelves in that general vicinity and turned my head and suddenly came face to face with a very MAD, thirsty and hungry snake!!! I wrestled him out and ran him upstairs, boy was he thirsty!!! as I was pouring more water into his bowl he started biting the stream of water... I thought heh! You are probably hungry! He immediately devoured two rats... he NEVER does that!!! I usually have to leave them under his hide over night!! I am so glad he is safe and sound and now with 3x as much sand bags on his cage!!!

This is such a big triumph for me to be successfully keeping one of these!!!! and on my first try!! woo hoo!!!
