yes.... I had two sirtalis die like that this year :(:(
my guess is that they bite themselves because they are in some sort of pain, and they are biting where it hurts as if to bite an "attacker"?

I was thinking it was a response to pain too....i never thought of it attacking whatever hurt. That seems probable though....sorry about the snake.

My conclusion as well, but there's also a possibility that it's just a result of the spasms. This is something that my male did right before it died. Considering that I never got him to bite (or musk, or poop on) me, even when I was inspecting and cleaning his wounds, the pain must have been unimaginable. But since I saw how he bit himself (looked like he had zero control of his muscles, including the jaw muscles), I'm inclined to believe that it wasn't because of the pain.

I had not seen that before. I have had once that a snake died and has substrate in his mouth. I think that this was also because of spasms...
Sorry for your loss, Don.

I'm sorry Don. That's so sad to see. My first thought was pain, too, but Stefan makes a good point too. Too sad. :-(

I'd like to note that's he/she's in shed; I had one baby butler die in shed also. I think what happens is sometimes they just can't get the skin off, so it dries and constricts their body. ):

What makes you think Dons snake was in shed Kyle? When you freeze snakes they get a blue tint and their eyes look like they are in shed when they aren't. They have to go a long time with a dry shed for it to constrict them. And they will be visibly wrinkled and dry. I don't think Don let it come to that. ;)
Also... If the snake was in shed when he died then he wouldn't be in a state where the shed would dry and constrict. That would come weeks later. ;)

the reason he looks wrinkled is cuz he's dead...died during the night....the blue tint is from being frozen also....he didn't have an old shed on him to constrict him.....he would have been wrinkled and I would have soaked and peeled him.

Yup. Didn't think Don would have let that happen. When this happens to my snakes I soak them and if it still doesn't work. You CAN hand shed them. I have done it before.
Has this happened to one of your snakes Kyle? Just curious...

I have peeled snake's before... just start at the nose and it comes right off! the snakes will even help you get it off once its started!

Ok, gonna show my newbie-ness... how do you know that they need to be peeled? What would you look for? Unless the snake started the process and just couldn't finish I'm not sure I would see the signs that it needed assistance.

babies will look dry and wrinkly....adults...don't peel all of it off and you will see parts of dead skin on them.

I guess this is just one of those things you have to see in person to truly understand? My babies look dry and I guess a bit wrinkly for a week or so before they shed. How long would you wait after noticing that you think they look dry? Or like my first thought, is it something totally obvious once you see it?
