I've heard already multiple examples of garters being gravid and producing young 2 time in 1 year. I think it also depends when she had the youngs the first time. If that is early in the year, the changes increase from what I heard.

I have observed our local garters mating in early March and again in September and early October; I have also seen "fresh" neonates in March as well as Sept. and Oct. Sperm storage aside, this timing could match the gestation period, but sound documentation is needed. We can not assume that small neonates we find in early spring aren't starved survivors from the previous fall!

Our local coastal elegans will eat smaller snakes, so timing in juvenile activity may play a major role in their survival. We've also got lots of patient egrets and herons around here! Egads! (Did I just go off on another little tangent again...)

Dekayi snakes store sperm also.

I have seen one example first hand of a female collected in the fall produced a litter the following spring, with no contact from any other snake.

I got a garter from a pet store in UT once, and within few weeks of having her, an addition of 8 little wigglers showed up while I was at work. Didn't even know she was gravid.

I have heard of a similar topic, I think pertaining to Leopard lizards. Think it said that when the hatchlings first appear, there doesnt seem to be any adults around, as leopard lizards are lizard eaters.
