Nice ones. :) How difficult are they compared to garters?

these are coming from south east Asia.
And live a little wetter, not the bottom, but the air.
They lay eggs, and eat the same as the Thamnophissen ;)

males mixximum 55 cm,females max. 75 cm.

Very nice looking. I've seen a few dealers have had them on their list lately. Do you know if you have a pair or not? I'd be interested in how they breed.

Kuno,

I'm no expert on these, but its my understanding that these are rear-fanged and venomous, though they're very good natured and rarely bite. I have no idea how harmful their venom is. Maybe it's as mild as the garter's. Who knows? Just wanted to share the info so you could investigate, if you choose. Please let us know if you find any more info or need to correct anything I've said. Take care,

Rick

Hay Cazador, these snakes are NOT venemous!!!!!

They are free to hold in the netherlands, but nobody have these snakes...

Well that's not really difficult, even venomous snakes are legal to hold in the Netherlands. There is no law against it.

And I also thaught they where rear-fanged, which does not mean they are dangerous. They are like Hog-nosed Snakes.

Hey Kuno,

congratulations!
They look very fine.

I have kept them some years ago during two years or so.
They are very similar in way of life and terrarium-conditions as Thamnophis.
They swim more, but you also noticed that.

I lost mine in a stupid way. They lived an my attic and the temperature dropped suddenly. I noticed this too late and they all were dead. Temperature got below 10 °C. and they could not handle that.

Not a winterrest as in Thamnophis.
It also depends where they are from. If I remember well, they live in different regions with different climates. I am not 100 % sure about this.
When I find something about it I will let you know.
Mine died when the temperatures got to low, so I think you can lower the temps with some degrees, but I would not go lower than 18-20 °C.
Maybe you can limit the hours of light also.
Or maybe keeping them a period quite dry will stimulate the reproduction.
You must treat them as tropical animals.

yes i know that the place were they live is really not the same as the thamnophis, but there is no information to find about this species.
but thanks anyway ;)

You might take a hint from the type of locations where they are found, what the weather and climate cycles are in that area, and what time of year they breed. At least it's a place to start...

Was considering giving the same advice. The local veterans usually give exactly that advice; just try to copy the conditions in their natural habitat.

Problem is that there is as good as nothing known about the exact places they live. Sure, it is tropical, but at what height do they live (temperature) and under what kind of moist conditions?

KITKAT

What country are they from? What is the general climate and climate cycles there?

Who collects them?

If you can find someone who collects them, then you can ask more specifics on where they are found...

Thamnophis

They are from South-east Asia.
Finding the collectors will not be easy.

Well, the current temperature in Jakarta is 29C, it's mostly clear and the relative humidity is 74%. ;) Even if it isn't perfect, it should be good enough.

I agree with this, but in my terrarium I always had one part cooler and moist and the rest was dry and warm.
Worked well.

Hi Kuno,
Here are a few people who are selling Xenochrophis vittatus on other websites. At least a few are breeding them, so maybe they could help you.
Rick

Indonesian Garter Snakes Sale/Trade - Garter, Water & Ribbon Snakes (http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95335)

help! please take some indonesian garter babies!!! - Garter, Water & Ribbon Snakes (http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81602)

Also, someone's been selling them on Kingsnake.com Classifieds > Other Snakes (http://market.kingsnake.com/index.php?cat=6) but I don't know if it's one of the above people. IIRC the second person is selling them for $10 each.

The guy on Kingsnake.com seems to know more than most regarding these snakes. I bought two from him a little over a month ago.
He has a phone # and email on kingsnake. His company is DTS Herps and if you go to classifieds, click " other snakes", you'll usually find a couple of listings of his.

The one about "Please take my....." hasn't replied to anyone in months.

If you have any advice for me that would be great. I know mine get pretty low energy if the cage temp falls below 80 F.

If your trying to breed, I'm sure you know they lay eggs.

Snakes of Southeast Asia : Striped Keelback - Xenochrophis vittatus (http://ecologyasia.com/verts/snakes/striped_keelback.htm)

Above is a site regarding the snakes, but as you said info is hard to come by!

Take Care,

Bob

Hi I've had one for a couple months now and he is my favorite. The ambient temp. in his cage is between 75f and 80f with a hot spot around 85f to 88f, the humidity stays around 50%. This has worked very well for me indeed. He eats pinkys but will only take frequent small meals. He could easily take 2 or 3 small pinkys but he only takes 1 twice a week. He seems to soak in his dish alot. When I first got him he was eating fish like crazy but then I learned about vitamin b defiency and decided to switch all my garters to rodents.
