I didn't want to hijack Reed's thread or be mean to him, considering what his thread is about...

BUT...

I'M GETTING THREE PUGETS SOON!!! It will be a couple weeks as I've got to pay the breeder first - and gods bless that saint of a man, he's WILLING to take INSTALLMENT payments! Yes! He's willing to fritter and piss around with whatever I'm able to afford to send him. Once all my money's there and the checks are cleared - MY PEWGIES WILL COME!!!!

I'm getting two males to go with Peepers and Jeepers. And, CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??? - he's GIVING ME FOR FREE a Pewgie he can't sell as it has a floppy tail that every once in awhile flips up-side-down.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting the third Pewgie due to his kindness. I don't know yet if it's female or male. But if female I'll put her in her own tank so she can't breed with the boys accidentily. She'll only be alone for a bit as I'll find a female or two to keep her company. I DON'T want her to get lonely.

I'M SO XCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!! And so HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pewgies were a dream for me and I never believed I'd have them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOO XCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I'm excited!

Dekay-Wayne got me started in gaters - possession-wise - and so far, that's all I have is the two NY Eastern Garters I got from him, Peepers and Jeepers.

I've wanted Pugets forever; well... as long as I've been into garters which is about six months. YES, I'M VERY XCITED!!!

And prolly more so since the breeder is so laid back and so willing to work with someone that doesn't have pot or window one. Totallly cool about taking payments - more worried about how I'm going to receive what he sends - esthetic-wise.

Great guy and I hope to work with him again.

You can call me what you want. You can also call me 'mk,' which is what I go by. But, whatever flips your switch.

Seeing a Puget was what got me into realizing I could get into garters seriously. :D Now I love them ALL!

Ah, my 'Rockster. At whos feet I must lay all blame. Girlfriend, thanks for being a friend and giving my your help. You're a love! Should I ever breed Hoggies, one has your name on it.

I didn't want to "spill the beans" until everything was worked out financially and logistically. I didn't want to talk outta school and then have to come back and say, "Oh. Never mind! No Pewgies for me!"

Thanks, Amanda. There's the possibility one o'my new babies will carry your name. Only fitting. Hugs to you.

P.S.

Anudder reason I waited was I wanted to make sure YOU, 'Rockster, were the first I shared it with. Got that done and then there was no NEED to contain the xitement ANY LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. After you. If Broke Back is a gull, I'm gonna name her... 'ROCKSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You like that? Or should I go with Amanda? I like 'Rockster - has more meanting to us.

Yeah. I may not be breeding Hoggies, but I may be getting some that I like and want to love and hug and kiss if my breeder can use them. Details to follow...

Actually, no matter what sex Broken Back is, it's named 'Rockster. S/he's special, great, a bit quirky, and a great person. Yeah. No matter the sex.

One snigglette's name down. Two to go.

I'm thinking Inuit (did I spell that rite?) names.

Yeah. Alaskan Natives? It's spelled something like that. I'm in the ballpark with the spelling, but I don't know for sure.

Words from their culture. Like my Hoggies.

Kanabec means "snake" in Ojibway. "Niizh" means two (the word for green was a billion letters long and I couldn't pronounce it, let alone remember the spelling!)

Thank you, Shanley, my dear. Thank you VERY MUCH!!!!

What can I say? Great minds. THANKS!!!!

I'll have to Google like I did for Niizh - I knew Kenabec (we've a county here named that that the Snake River runs through).

Will be cool. Yeah.

I'm snuggely, quiet, cuddley, at-peace-happy. I'm really super happy.

Garter_Gertie
10-03-2008, 06:25 PM
Shanley... I, personally, think you have.

I've always been amazed at the name Sooty for a garter. SO FITTING!!!!

And Willow? Garters are so willowy.

Continue to go with your heart. Your heart will burbble up names.

You do damn good, Kid. You do damn good.

GartersRock
10-03-2008, 06:27 PM
Hmmm.... Cikuq means Ice... Which is what Pugets remind me of for some STRANGE reason. LOL!
Iluliaq = Iceberg
Iyaroak = Apple of the Eye LOL!
Kunikpok = Kisses :D
Quvianuq = Joy
Tungortok = Is blue :D
Asiavik = New blue berry. LOL

*shrugs* Hmmm......

Garter_Gertie
10-03-2008, 06:27 PM
Shanley, I can try to think up a name. But... It wouldn't have the feeling and love and meaning as it would if it came from you.

Keep doing what you're doing. Think of a name that connects and means something to you.

I think the names you've come up with equal or better the names I've come up with.

Follow your heart...

Nope. But like I said. Google is amazing!

GartersRock

K - The k has two distinctly different pronounciations. The first one is that of the k in king, vg. ikkitit, matches; the second one is pronounced deep in the throat. It is very similar to a Kr and we have written it thus.
The second last syllable is stressed usually.
J and Y - The j and the y are interchangeable and should be pronounced as y in you.
S - The s is generally pronounced as sh, eg. amisut (amishut). Some bands in the Eskimo Point region pronounce it as an h, vg. asso (aHo).
I - the i is pronounced as ee, vg. inuk (eenuk).
U - the u is pronounced oo as in shoot, or better as in the latin "una".
NG - The ng is pronounced with a single sound, as in singing and never as in "ungodly".
DLERK - at the end of a word is pronounced like TSLERK. It is in fact the only really difficult pronounciation, along perhaps with the KR.

Ah, 'Ster... I'll attack the pronuciation-thingy someother time.

Ittiz Friday, long week, ditzo over my new kids, and not quite right with gods-I've-lost-count-of-the-beers.

Do you have my e-mail address? If snot, let me know and I'll send to you. I had to study the Ojibway pronunciation chart for quite awhile and practise for quite awhile to get Niizh down correctly.

Kunikpok = KunEEKpok

Tungortok = ToonGORtok

I *think* that's the way to pronounce the names. From what 'Rockster posted.

Congrats Gertie!!!!!! It was the Pugets who got me into garters, too. In fact it was the Pugets who got me more into the whole snake experience. So they are either to thank or to blame, depending on if you ask me or hubby. LOLOL

I look at mine every day and am just wowed, over and over, by how stunning they are. :-)

Lori, Tami, THANKS!!!

Huh. I wasn't aware Pugets were the reason so many got into or came to know garters. That's really cool!

I'm anxious to see them and have them. It will be fun to have two different kinds.

I think. I hope...

Oh, lord. I may have just done something horrible!

I now spend ("waste" to some people  ) so much time watching all the snakes. Comparing P & J, looking at their differences, noticing how different they are in 'personality,' playing with Niizh (Kenabec will be on sabtical for about two months with the breeder) and studying his face and the scales and his marking...

Let's say I spend 1 hour; won't that now increase to two - at least garter watching - because I've double the amount of snakes to watch?

Oh lord in heaven! I'm gonna be be one happy camper for sure!!! :D

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garter_Gertie
10-04-2008, 10:18 AM
Gosh. This is alot of talk about how nice looking these snakes are. I've seen pictures and thought how pretty, but this is something to read all these words. I guess/think what I mean is that maybe I'm not aware of what I'm actually getting - that I may be amazed when I see them.

I mean, I know they're pretty but maybe I don't know just how stunning Pugets are. If that's the case, this going to be even more funnier!!!!

Garter_Gertie
10-08-2008, 08:14 PM
Besides 'Azul' haven been taken one to two times...

Other than 'Rockster, I felt it best to give my boys Inuit names since they're coming from Alaska.

Gods bless the humaniod 'Rockster for beating me to Googledom and finding the two most perfect names!

These, to me, are very special snakes. Garters are the only snakes that live in AK. While these babies technically aren't from AK, being from the environs o'Puget Sound (I don't *think* that's all that near to AK...), they're coming from AK.

And to me that means they're AK snigglettes and are Specialer! :)

Oh! Please understand, all of you! PLEASE! I'm not demeaning any garters from the lower 48 states! NOT AT ALL!

I'm just tying in my new kids to the fact only garters live in AK. That's all. I hope you understand.

All garter kids are special. I hope you understand what I mean!

Olive, no. You know not of what you speak. LOL!!! I spent 1/2 hour at work fiddling around and trying to figure things out. Then time to go home, which I did and it took ANOTHER 1/2 hour to actually get the pic where you now see it.

Truth be told, it was like my 5th or 6th time! LOL!!!

Thanks, Tammers. Rick says they're way darker now (and yes, this is my babies' litter pic when wee ones, I double checked). And I don't know about the orange-ish kind'a striped ones???????? But pics here come out so goofy sometimes. Folks are always saying "But s/he doesn't look ANYTHING like that and the picture doesn't do him/her justice." So, who knows?

They're heads are different than what I'm used to. More slender and less broad at the back? Is that it?

I sent my FINAL payment off to Rick today. So next week, week after that my kids should be here! I need to start doing the pg feathering my nest and doing the nursery-thingy.

Now I need to start sending payments for the snake I bought for Dave (the naturalist at the park I work at), Carmello or Carmella II depending on sex. He's ALWAYS wanted an Eastern Milk snake and damn if I didn't GO WEEKS and FOREVER before I realized there were possible ones right under my nose!

Carmello/a II will live here with me as we don't have room at the park - and Dave's not sure we actually HAVE them in the park though they are native MN snakes. And I'll take Carmello/a II to work with me and happily turn him/her over to 'Dad' and let him have the honors during the snake presentation. See, I do Winnie, the garter. She's MY baby. But I want Dave to be happy and have HIS baby and show him/her to the public.

He is SO HAPPY AND SO EXCITED and I'm thrilled I am able to give this to the man who has mentored and taught me so much, and puts up with me and my ideas. He is a very dear, dear friend and I'm THRILLED I can do this for him!

And, again - like with him selling me my VERY FIRST EVER (you only ever have one 'first ever') garters, Peepers and Jeepers - it is to our own Snake Whisperer I give thanks. With out Dekay, I wouldn't be able to do this for Dave. Honest. I'd been looking around for an Eastern Milk (CB) for MONTHS.

THANKS, DEKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh! I guess I got off on a tanget there, didn't I? WHOOPS!

'Rockster, thass what I'm thinking! I've e-mailed Rick and have asked him to confirm so I can take off work... But I don't know if he's going to get it before Monday - is college address!

I'm antsy and have to pee alot... I'm already pacing. I'm scared I won't be able to care for them - I've Peepers and Jeepers to worry about, not to mention Niizh...

I'm so scared I'm not up to them, their addition, their wants and needs...

BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO KISS AND HUG AND HOLD THEM!!!!

Rick says 'Rockster hasn't flipped-tail in like a month. Not that *I* care, but it would be good for 'Rockster. Also, Rick is worried he won't be able to figure out which snigglette IS 'Rockster and is worried he'll pick the wrong one - now that s/he's not flipping - and someone else will get him/her thinking it's an okay snake.

So that worries me, too. That I make sure I get 'Rockster - for him/her's sake as well as Rick's.

Then there's the just NORMAL mk WORRY OUT HER BUTT. Cry me a river! I wish I could pick them all up.

You are a love. Thank you so much for your 'fiendship,' care and love. And your interest in me and my kids.

Gods. Will I make it to Tuesday??????????????????????????

I'm shaking - which is not due to us having no heat here, the boiler died and they need to replace it; long story... - because I'm so nervous.

The weather here turned and the heat packs won't last 48 hours. Things should be okay since they'll be indoors most of the time. And it's above freezing - was 48 at 5:00 AM so WAY WARMER than the night before when it got down to 30.

It is raning. But is supposed to get up into the 60s today, but won't have the sun o'the past two days.

So, they'll prolly be sleepy, but otay...

Then there's just the xcitement of not believing this is happening to me. And knowing I'm going to have three new babies that will have different personalities still than P & J and Niizh. I'm really curious to see and watch these guys after 'talking' to Rick, you and 'Rockster.

I hope they bring P & J outta their 'shells' when I put them together; though Jeeps is really coming along, is out more, doesn't run when I open the tank or walk up to it, and only tries to get away when I touch him. So I've started just petting in the tank and not taking out so he'll 'learn' touching doesn't mean leaving the tank.

Poor Peepers is just neurotic and a scaredy-cat and that's that. I only bug him when I take him out to feed him. Usually... LOL!!! Sometimes I take him out to just kiss him before putting him back in... I'M SO MEAN!!! Yesterday he ate all but TWO pieces OF TWO ENTIRE EARTHWORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Biggest meal yet for the silly guy.

If 'Rockster, Kunikpok and Tungortok arrive sleepy and sluggish, I've been given instructions on what to do. Since they've been eating caribou... I'm thinking about getting stew meat...???????????? And, of course, will bulk up on pinkies and will look for whole, real fish - what I have is fillets.

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cold as they were, they're alert and UP AT THE FRONT O'THE TANK! I've NO IDEA who is who, but there is one that's smaller than the other two and I guess I'll call him 'Rockster. Rick said they're all males. Praise the gods!

For having just come 48 hours from ALASKA, these guys are SO ****ING MELLOW!!!! They're oot and aboot, checking ME out!

Oh, thank you everyone! These guys are so different than I've ever had! Not that I've had a bazillion garters/snakes, but SO DIFFERENT!

One o'The Boys was up on a log, hangin' out, at the front of the tank - so pretty! And I knocked on the tank and NOTHING. Knocked harder - NOTHING. Not even a tongue flick. KNOCKED ON THE GLASS REALLY REALLY HARD and NOTHING! I freaked, fumbled getting the tank lid off and reached in with a finger to get my dead baby... And off he slithered! Weird! LOL!!!

As I type, the front-tank one went to hide out and two are in the 'sauna.' The 10g will not be the best home for them and I'll be glad when I can move them into the 29g. They're REALLY long. Rick says in their second year they'll add about one more foot (!!!YIKES!!!) and will fill out. These guys are really really long! WAY longer than Winnie at the park, the longest garter I know.

This all feels surreal. It's gonna take some time getting used to. I never imagined I'd have Peepers and Jeepers let alone three BLUE snakes! I wish I could shrink myself down and get in the tank(s) with them.

Garter_Gertie
10-22-2008, 06:11 PM
'Rockster is the smallest o'the three. About the size o'Jeepers head-wise and around-wise, but AT LEAST double the length.

Kunikpok, "Kisses," has a teeny-tiny white spot smack dab in the middle of the back o'his head. He's been 'kissed'! :) Lettuce hope his kiss stays, for identification porpoises.

Tungortok is the largest head-wise, around-wise, length-wise.

Bet in adulthood I'll not be able to tell any o'them a part! LOL!!!

I've just been sitting here, watching Niizh, then into the living room to watch Peeps and Jeeps; well, Jeeps anyway.

Then back in here to The Blues Brothers (EEEEKKKK! DON'T CHA'LOVE IT????!!!) tank to watch them.

They're all so different - so just themselves. What fascinating creatures to have/have as a hobby! I just love the world! There is SO MUCH to learn about! I'm really glad I learned about snigglettes.

And I thank Dekay, 'Rockster and Rick for all the help you guys have given me and the kids you've passed into my care. Oh! And Jodi, my Hoggy breeder, too!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good times, MK :). I wish I had more time to be as active as I once was, but sadly, I don't.

I love how excited you are about your new snakes, MK, and your enthusiasm tells me you'll be a great owner for these guys!!! They really are special snakes! They're easily handled, and aren't the least bit skittish. If there's any drawback to these snakes, it's that they are voracious eaters. They've never bitten me, or even struck at me, but they have bitten each other, especially when fish is on the menu, so keep an eye on them. Other than that, you'll love them, and I'm sure they'll be eating out of your hand in no time. Cheers !!!

Finally, a big hello to all of my friends on the forum. Best regards,
Rick

Hay, Rick! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christa, thanks! These are way different in 'personality' than Peeps & Jeeps, and Niizh. They stay their ground and do a stare-down. Currently, they're slowling pulling in their heads when I wiggle my finger - and they're awake. But they don't run... They're kind'a sneaky and like ssssllllloooooollllllyyyyy with draw head - pause - and sssslllllooooooowwwwwwllllllyyyyy crawl in the opposite direction. Very nonchalant.

They don't seem to flick their tongues as often. But, maybe they're still chilled/off from the trip. They sure don't seem to NEED and settling in! LOL!!! They're comfy looking under the white light, on the heat pad.

I picked one up yesterday and only thing it did was quietly musk on me. Settled down fairly quickly in my hand.

The red on their tongue is not red-red, but a darker maroon-blood red. You can hardly see the difference from the black.

Peepers and Jeepers like to burrow under plant pots, substrate. These guys don't seem - yet - to like to burrow. But rather hide under something that's raised a bit off the substrate so that they're under something, but not like under ground.

And they stick pretty much together in one place, mostly, like one snake with three heads! P & J tend to go their own ways and rarely are together, unless to snuggle up under something.

I'm home as they're pulling the old boiler today. HOPEFULLY I will have heat - that I've been w/o since Sunday - come tomorrow nite... Pulling old boiler today, new one goes in tomorrow.

So. I held 'Rockster and tried to feed him fish. Fineally he took a piece and I let him down to swollow it. Nah. He spit it out and I put him back in the tank.

Then I held Tungortok and tried to hand feed him. He, like 'Rockster, took a piece and tried to run off with it. When I wouldn't let him, he spit it out.

So, I put Kunikpok in The Feeder Plastic Thingy with fish and the guy fatted out!!! Put Tungortok in and he ate some too! 'Rockster is in there now and we'll see what happens.

NOT BAD FOR DAY TWO!!!

I had to switch Tungortok and 'Rockster's names. Found a lump on the tippy-top of [who was Tungortok] 'Rockster's spine, pretty close to the tail area.

With no solid education to back me, but just trying to figure things out, I'm thinking as a baby 'Rockster had some injury - mushed vertebrae, broken vertebrae (w/o injuring the spinal column), brusied vertebrae and it calcified when healing.

He's not flip-tailed since arriving and seems to be as good as new. Poor guy's prolly gonna get arthritis as he gets older.

Garter_Gertie

Your cave is just fine. Normal temps.

Sweetiepie, this is going to be far less stressful for Olive than Muzzer. You're doing fine. Listen to James. Just leaver her alone.

If push comes to shove and you need to help her with her shed, you'll know that when it's all over by looking at her shed and at Olive.

In the meantime, it will be a few days before she sheds and you have been the PERFECT MOTHER and done EVERYTHING RIGHT!!!

:)

ps Don't bother to feed her until after she sheds. The majority of garters don't eat during this time.

But AFTER, she should be pretty hungry!

Zoe, you and Olive will be fine. There is nothing to worry about until after - and THEN it's not a "worry."

If the eye caps don't come off, you'll know by looking at the shed. And should that happen - never happened to me yet (and I doubt will to you with your 'sauna') - there are at least a dozen folks here that can help you with that. And it's not a major deal or worry.

You and Olive will do just FINE!

Thanks guys. I'll just leave her be. Still can't help to be nervous. I guess it's the eye cap thing that worries me the most.

I've never had snakes until the garter I have now (always wanted them, always loved them, but I still live at home and my mom is afraid of them) and the first time my snake started getting cloudy eyes I freaked!:D I was very relieved when I finally figured out what was going on...

olive oil
11-01-2008, 09:23 PM
I knew she was going to shed when her eyes turned, but I kinda freaked out when they cleared up and there was no shed. Then, the next day there it was. I'm glad I know how it works now!

Garter_Gertie
11-01-2008, 09:30 PM
Isn't that SO WEIRD, ladies? How they clear up after getting cloudy?

The cloudy - from what I've learned - is some kind'a moisty stuff that's lubricating so the eye skin come off. But why it goes away and the eyes clear, I'm totally clueless and in the dark.

Winnie, a Common Eastern Garter - from the north, at the park... Her eyes don't get blue but get white. Weird.

Garter_Gertie
11-01-2008, 09:33 PM
Zoey... It doesn't always happen the day after. Like some time, depending on species (and prolly circumstances) it can happen as long as a week later. It was a day, two, three - I didn't count - with my Blues Boy.

Winne, the garter at the park, it seems to go a week. As does Ripley, the bull snake there.

Go figure.

Just wanted you to know so that if next time it's more than one day you're not giving yourself and ulcer.

Yeah, Sweetie... Thass what I thought and why I mentioned it. :)

Once you get your first year under your belt, I think you'll be much less nervous.

It's hard not knowing and caring so much. Wanting to do what's right and the best and afraid of the unknow/unexperienced. Is this normal? Did I do somthing wrong? Is my baby okay? What should I do?

You're doing fine, Zoey; you're doing fine.

Did quite a bit of spot pick-up in The Blues Brothers' tank and will HAVE to do major cleaning this weekend! We got tinckle dust all over the place!

And, just like Rick said, these guys CANNOT be left alone with fish. They beat the tar outta each other! Tug-o-wars BIG time! Bite the food, bite the head, go for the neck... They're not nice brothers! LOL!!!

And they STUFF themselves! I mean STUFF! But then squiggle it way farther down than any snake I've ever seen. To the point where they look boa-like - skinny up near head/neck and AS BIG AS MY THUMB way farther down. VERY weird looking and not what I'm used to.

Gertie,
I just realised that in my absence, you've managed to acquire a hell of a lot of snakes.
Way to go, girl! Pretty good for someone who claimed to be ascared of 'em for so long.:D

So nice to have you back, Anj. I so missed your humor and chattiness.

Thank you very much! I have come'a ways. It is fun to look back to those days when I wouldn't even go near Ripley. Now I live to come home to pester and feed snakes!

'Ster... 'Rockster is a HUGE, BIG MO'FO and eating me outta HOUSE AND HOME!!!

He is a good boy and calm, but wiggley, when I pick him up. He's a sweet boy.
