Guess I set myself up for that one. I was just wondering how he could tell.

Girls have bigger hips.... When looking at the tail section one can usually tell, however the most accurate way would be to insert a probe into the vent (for adults) or Popping (babies)

There is a thread with the diagrams of tail structures somewhere:eek:

Eastern Pa - how often do you go on excursions for snakes... I just saw a pic of a cottonmouth you caught! Must have been down south somewhere... right?

I don't get out as much as I would like to.I go to a local park and see a ton of garters and some ringnecks. All the garters are normal.I used to go to jersey a lot.I just have not found the time this year. The cottonmouth was from my SC trip this year.

right on.
If you guys go out at all next year let me know! I'd be interested in tagging a long. The solo missions get kind of lame for me after a while.

I live in western NY, so unless east PA is Philly, you are welcome to come here.

There is 10,000 acres available to look for herps:D

definately... what town do you live in?
I get kind of skittish when I'm out in my local state parks. I feel like I'm burying a body when I flip logs or rocks looking for anything... hehe!
I'm not completely up on the Pa laws and by-laws. Plus its state ground.

My personal plot is 40 acres, my neighbor and friend owns another 60, including some additional wet areas.

The rest is state land, I have been here since 1973, and I can honestly say no one cares if a yellow or red garter snake is collected.

I know several D.E.C guys myself, and they don't have any interest in garter snakes unless some blatant land raping were pointed out to them.
