Well, the other day I had a very astonishing conversation with a roach friend of mine and found out that he'll be importing 4 pairs of Marcopanesthia rhinoceros, the world's largest and heaviest cockroach. The only problem is... A single pair is $400. My parents have agreed to let me purchase a pair of these awesome bugs if I can raise the money through selling cockroaches and my other "wares" in 40 days. I've wanted these ever since I set eyes on them in Allpet roach book and I finally have my chance!
So, if you need feeders or are looking for new snakes, here's what I've got! Now's the time to buy!

Feeder Cockroaches:

Blaptica dubia
Guyanna orange-spotted cockroach
$20 for 40

Eublaberus posticus
Orange headed cockroach
$20 for 30

Nauphoeta cinera
Lobster cockroach
$10 for 150

Blaberus discoidalis
False death's head/ Discoid cockroach
$20 for 35

^^^ These are the best candidates for a feeder set up. If you need care info, I can provide it!

Pet Cockroaches:

Archimandrita tesselata
Peppered cockroach
$5 each. Best price on the net guaranteed. Grows to 3+ inches and is very social; They'll eat out of your hand. :)

Gromphadorhina portentosa
Hissing cockroach
$20 for 30. Individual prices arrangeable. THE pet cockroach.

SNAKES!!!:

Butler's garter snakes, unsexed. $30 each. Feeding on either worm pieces, salmon/tilapia/pinky mix or both. Approximately 8 left.

Red sided garter snakes, unsexed. $25 each, 2 for $40. Feeding on the above. Mother is very spunky. :P

Thank you all for your support. Let's hope I can pull stuff together! :)

I saw peppered roaches in one of the exhibits on vacation. They're cool! I wouldn't mind one or two as pets..........no colonies for me though!
And if it weren't for the leettle issue of it being illegal, I'd be over there at this very moment collecting a couple of the Butler's! :D:rolleyes:
Good luck, Kyle. I hope you pull it off!!

Personally, I prefer the Tesselata over hissers. They look a lot more like mantids than roaches. :)

I'm interested in 2 of the peppered cockroaches... Since I'm new to this forum I apparently can't PM people...

Does anyone know which roaches are legal in Florida? I'm trying to find a colony but B. dubia and B. lateralis are both apparently illegal here!

I am so strange (duh!) because I HATE scorpions and spiders when they are around me... But if they are under my control, I know where they are and that they can't jump on me or hurt me. I am ok. Same with venomous snakes... Hmmm...

It's just what finding them in your home signifies that's the problem. Kind of like flies. They live on your garbage and other unmentionables, yet the insect itself is not a scary looking thing.

Zephyr

A roach can be cuddly? Do they bite? Yes. :)
They can be cuddly, especially if there's food around, but then again garters do the same. XD
And to stop any possible rumors...
ROACHES DO NOT AND WILL NOT BITE YOU.
They think the smell of human is repulsive. Go figure.
However, if you happened to soak your hand in strawberry juice for a half hour then left it (lol) in a colony of lobster roaches, I'm pretty sure you'd be missing plenty of skin after around 3 minutes.

Aundrea
08-27-2008, 03:43 PM
WOW I think that is so weird that they dont like our smell LOL Thats kinda funny

I never thought a Roach could be cuddly LOL

Now why do the hissers hiss? Just for the hell of it? LOL

Zephyr
08-27-2008, 05:54 PM
Now why do the hissers hiss? Just for the hell of it? LOL
YES.
GOOD QUESTIONS!!! :)
The primary use is defense; a predator is a lot less likely to grab onto to a throbbing spikey mass that's suddenly started hissing at them. They get really mad if you grab them wrong and males are the worse; they push air through modified spiracles, or air holes, on their sides and that makes the sound. Many other roaches can do it but hissers do about 10 times as often.
The second use is courtship. The male hisses to assert dominance over an area (While bumping and fighting with rival males using modified ridges on the head shield, or pronotum) and seduces the female with a gentler hissing. If they start doing the dirty deed and the male stops hissing, the females stop being receptive and that's the end of that.
:)

Kyle, could you please post detailed care instructions for peppered roaches?? :-) Just, you know, for informational purposes.... LOL

Kay! :)
Scientific name: Archimandrita tesselata
Common name(s): Peppered cockroach, giant peppered cockroach, giant brazilian cockroach
Adult stats: Males 3 - 3 1/2 inches Fully winged; capable of short "flights"; longer visually than females; 12-30 month lifespan
Females 2 1/2- 3 inches Fully winged; capable of gliding if given the oppurtunity; short n' stubby 12-40 month lifespan
Diet: Mainly oak leaves, but likes fresh fruits, dog food, and veggies.
Temps: 72- 82 Fahrenheit.
Setup: Lots of burrowing space for nymphs; last instar nymphs require a vertical molting platform to ensure the wings don't retain fluid or deform. No supplemental heating is required. Substrate should consist of only oak leaves for an easier to clean setup, or oak leaves on top of potting soil for a more aesthetic setup. Copulation will occur almost immediately after the final molt if a male and female are together. Nymphs will appear anywhere from 4-8 months after copulation.
**EDIT- For water, you can lightly mist lightly, give them a very shallow dish of water, or use water crystals. Or keep a dish of fruit/veggies always available. :)
Here's my "conservative" setup. There's a lot more oak leaves now, and I secured the plank in the background.

The adult in that pic just molted; they turn a dark tan color with peppered spots, hence the name, when the tannins in their "blood" dry. :)

And now, the ACTUAL size of an adult male peppered roach. Females sometimes look this big when they're full of babies, seeing as the abdomen will extend past the wings. :)

Peppereds give live birth.

1. Thank you. XD
2. You could do that, or you could benefit the whole colony in the long run and do a culling after all the nymphs of a certain instar mature; pick the biggest males and females and put them into the other bin. Let them multiply and use the first bin as your feeders. Eventually, after a year's worth of this cycle you'll end up with bulked up feeders that will produce better than what you started with. :)

Zephyr

LOL thats funny.

How did you get into Roaches? LOL :D
Well, it started 2 years ago when I saw some hissers at a science and engineering day I went to for science club. I came home and I remember what my ma said to me when I asked if I could get some: "Ha, roaches? In this house? You know what they say: Them toenails are tough."
lol
So in January I convinced them to let me get 20 hissers to start breeding my own food, seeing as I was paying around $10 a week for crix. Over the summer they multiplied; then I attended my first reptile show in August and saw some orange head roaches at one of the back tables. I asked my mom if I could get them; she said no. However, by the next show in September I was allowed to purchase my first orange heads and discoid roaches. From here everything snowballed; I was trading out tons of hissers for lobster roaches, giant caves, everything. By October I had gone from 3-4 species to 20.

good question aundrea exactly how close to your roaches are you (emotional wise)Seeing as there are so many of them, it's hard to name 'em. However, for the ones who stand out or I can identify, I have names. One of my big black hissers was Joker, and my large male giant morph hisser is TuffStuff.
I die a little inside when I have to feed off one of the "pet" species due to a mismolt, but with feeders I try to concentrate on the animal it's being fed to. :)

We saw Giant Cave Roaches at one of the exhibitions during vacation. Now they were cool! Can you find those around?I received a colony of those last year in September when I was "green" to roaches; they didn't produce until last month when I only had 6 of the original 24 left. A switch in substrate made all the difference; I went from using green oak leaves and no dirt to using potting soil with dead, seasoned oak leaves on top; there were babies in no time. :D

Cockroach. :P
From captive accounts around 10 years, although seeing as they're so rare and husbandry problems have abounded, I'm sure it's more like 15. The ones I have are around 4 1/2; they take 2-3 years to reach maturity.

And yes, the bill for such "fine dining" could easily tally up. lol

Just make sure you keep them separate or one species will out compete the other.
Those hissers are either newborns or 2nd instar, the peppereds possibly around 4th.

Zephyr
09-04-2008, 06:26 PM
Separate now? Or can they stay together for a little bit?Seeing as they're so young, yes. The hissers will snack on the peppereds or vice versa when one of them molts, seeing as they're such different species they don't recognize each other's "I'm molting, leave me alone" pheromone signals.

Yesterday, they set up one of their permanent tunnels; RIGHT ON THE GLASS!!!

Finally I've paid it ALL off. :P
Of course, I've got sphagnum moss, 'phib containers, a fridge, and mice to buy this week so there's another $250...

Yep, always something to spend money on in our hobbies... I know I'm never done. Got pretty much all my aquariums now, so now I have to start thinking about the 10 tub tall rack (roughly 34" x 17" x 6" tubs)I need to build for some of my breeding projects that are out-growing their current tubs.
Dont know how I keep fittting all this in a 9' x 15' room, but I do it. :)

Snakes(mine) and storage boxes(hers) everywhere.

Kyle, just had to tell you, thanks for the info on the oak leaves. My lobster roaches just devour them!!!!! Free food, whooo hooo!!

Loren, my hubby would feel you on that... he always says, when he leaves me some day, it will be easy as all he owns here is the tv and the stereo!!!! LOL

Kyle!! Look how big they've gotten already!!!!!

This is the first time I've gone looking for them... haven't seen them since the first day, literally, so I was shocked!! And excited-- that is, as long as you can assure me they will stop growing eventually and not eat me!! lol

I LOVE the speed of these guys.... sloooow and relaxed. Now that's my kind of roach. :-) I haven't looked for the hissers yet.

Make sure you have a vertical piece of plywood in there when they get bigger; otherwise they'll molt with not so pretty wings. :P

Um, well... Yesterday was cleaning day, though I didn't get any pictures. ((Too hectic generally on Saturdays.))
I'll try to get some pics after I feed the baby garters and the butler's. :P

Mine are great-- I moved the four of them to a 10 gallon tank with a rock and a propped-up piece of bark to climb to shed on. They mostly stay burrowed, but now, since they are larger, I can see the dirt and oak leaves move as they move around. :-)

Okay, time to dust off this thread.
So I'm sitting here on the comp when I hear a little scratchy noise. I thought it was the mice, but when I turned to look I saw both the rhinos out and about!
I grabbed my camera, and I got a nice vid with size/sex comparison. :)

YouTube - GIANT Cockroaches! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLCuBl-j62U)

Ta-da.

My friend Matt told me that after a few months in captivity they might start to feel comfortable above the litter and treat that as their "burrow."

Cuddles!!!! I'm naming mine Cuddles! (All of them, since, you know, it might be hard to tell them apart... LOL) Mine are fine... I guess... I never see them. (I have peppereds, remember, not the monsters that Kyle has.)

They are super easy to care for... they really take care of themselves. Here's their tank...
