I heard somewhere that this is taking place on August 28th. Can anyone confirm this for me. Also, is it all their stores or just certain ones? thx

infernalis

All stores, only the rectangle tanks, corner tanks and hex tanks excluded.

20 longs, $20 etc.... awesome deal, I have some cash tucked away to get a bunch!!:D

I don't suppose they let you pre-order a "less popular" size

Is it tanks only, or will their 20g long terrariums w/ the sliding lids also be on sale? Hmmmm.... guess I better budget a little extra spending money for the end of the month :)

My Petco said they weren't doing it until sometime in September...

Justinviper
08-10-2008, 05:19 AM
Hmm. mine say they are having it but not sure when. They say usually it's either late August or early September. From what I can gather from my fish forum it's only 20g-55g rectangle tanks. Tami, I don't believe the critter cages with the screen tops are included.

infernalis
08-10-2008, 06:35 AM
Our local petco told me that all glass tanks (4 sided only) of any size were included.

And no terrariums, or kits were included. Makes sense, Petco wants you to buy accessories while you are there.

Justinviper

I really want a couple of 33G tanks and they're definitely not common, despite the fact that they're standard
at $33 they'd be less than half price i think

anji1971
08-10-2008, 10:25 AM
I wish they had a sale like that at our PetSmart stores. A 100G tank is about $400 here!!

Stefan-A
08-10-2008, 10:27 AM
Tanks are about 1€ per litre here, so roughly 4€/gallon. I found a used 85 litre tank the other day, for about 30€. I'm seriously considering buying it, even though I don't need it.

anji1971
08-10-2008, 10:29 AM
Finding a use for it shouldn't be too hard, if you're like the rest of us here!!:D

Stefan-A
08-10-2008, 10:40 AM
I'm probably not like the rest of you here. ;)

Space is at a premium at the moment and I just got some troubling news regarding the pickup of the snakes I've ordered. I don't really have any extra space for it and I really don't need the tank. But it's so rare to find a cheap used tank here. This one used to be an aquarium, but has been used for rodents and doesn't hold water.

That remains to be seen. I heard earlier today that the person that was supposed to pick them up may decide to cancel the trip.

anji1971
08-10-2008, 01:28 PM
These would be the Natrix maura?
Depending on how far away they're coming from, would shipping them be out of the question?

Stefan-A
08-10-2008, 01:39 PM
Yeah, shipping would be out of the question.

I know I'm not the only one in this situation, so maybe some of the others who were counting on their animals being picked up could help me find an alternative. If the trip is cancelled, it's supposed to be determined this next week.

Went to Petco yesterday, started drooling over the prospective purchases.

40 gallon breeder tanks for $40, incredible price.....

My milk snake is going to be so happy in one of those.

Anyone got a sledgehammer I can borrow to knock down a couple walls???

Folks I just checked, and all the PETCO stores seem to have only 20-29 gallon tanks on sale for a buck a gallon.

Still a good deal for 20 longs, 20 talls and 29 gallons, but bummer if anyone planned on 40 or larger tanks......

Online circular, page 8 at petco dot com.

It's one specific brand, no lids, just a raw glass tank.

I plan to get some 20's and 29's but I really wanted a 40 breeder, they are like $129 normal price.

I can build a wood box with a glass front for less:cool:

I can get standard 20 talls for 20$, 10s for 8 $ and 20 longs for 25$ at my local petsore- tropical haven, anytime, regular price. The 20 longs have the thick glass too. The store has a huge storage room building, and buys huge volumes of everything. I think I paid under 100 for my 75 gallon fish tank a couple years ago.

The guy who owns tropical haven told me that petcos dollar a gallon sale will probably not include 20 longs. I will have to check, but I might go with the 25 $ ones he sells anyhow, cause they are thicker and nicer.

Just got back from the first run.. so far.

1 - 5.5 gallon for baby Dekayi snakes
1- 20 tall
2 - 20 longs and
1 - 29 gallon.

that's a lot of glass for $95 now I need to build another rack to hold it all up:eek:

And the 20 longs are made of thicker glass, they are heavy!!

Set one up for the baby milks, woo hoo...

Dekay Sweetie, I'm glad to see you having fun and not dwelling. Dorothy otay?

Shanley, "If dog rabbit." That's what my grandmother used to always say. Meaning, "If the dog had run faster he'd have caught the rabbit."

Kind'a like wishing 55 gals were on sale because they fit on your dresser. Good's good. We gotta go with what we're given.

I can finally finish of the shelving unit I built that holds 20 of these, and upgrade a bunch of growing snakes to larger tanks.

That's a heap of glass:D

Going back and getting another load tomorrow.

The little 5.5 tanks are really great for feeding and neonates.

I set one up for the baby Dekayi's and it works great for them.

Wiping out the last of the 20 longs....

The 29 gallons are great for climbers like ribbon snakes.

Going to go mail order for screen lids, 20 bucks a whack is steep.

Maybe I'll just custom cut plywood, then I can mount a fluorescent light under the lid:D

Loren
08-30-2008, 10:02 AM
I'll be making my own lids. Lots of work, but I just dont like petstore lids. Not secure enough for me. plus, the way I arrange my tanks makes the rear of the tank hard to reach, so clips dont work too well.

Garter_Gertie
08-30-2008, 11:19 AM
Loren, are you in a relationship? Do you want to be?

You LUCKY DOG! To be able to afford all those tanks! My knees grow weak just looking at them. Oh, how I envy you!

Dekay, I get the Four Paws tank lids. For a ten, I think they're like $7.XX bucks +/-. The Zoo Meds are no different, but WAY MORE. I like my tank tops - they can hold Sly who has to weigh about 20/25 pounds.

Garter_Gertie
08-30-2008, 11:23 AM
OHMYGOD! I just did the math and that's $220 JUST FOR TANKS!

Man. I need a Sugar Daddy.

Garter_Gertie
08-30-2008, 11:27 AM
I picked up today, from craigslist, a 10 gal and stand for $20. A steal. The tank *does* have a crack - but not broken yet - in one corner of the bottom pane so I picked up some silicone to seal both sides (and will put the heater and 'hot spot' at the other end). Yeah. I could have gotten a new one at Petco for $10 bucks, but he wouldn't sell just the stand and I really need the stand.

So. Now I can seperate Kenabec and Niizh (The Hoggies) and get a Petco 10 gal for a baby Eastern milk snake I hope to get! But still need to get all the stuff to put with the tank for the Eastern milk.

I'm gettin' there! :)

Loren
08-30-2008, 11:32 AM
Yep, its a chuck of change, but the lids will cost almost nothing (the wood was free), and when you consider what normal terrariums with lids cost (50$ each?), its a steal. Then, if you look at custom cages, you are talking 220. each.

I already have the shelving in place. I already have the heat in place. Have for quite some time actually.

I need a sugar momma, personally. Preferably before the credit card bill shows up. :)

Unfortunately when I search "22-30 year old Christian Reformed nurse that loves reptiles" on the dating sites, I dont get any matches.:D

Garter_Gertie
08-30-2008, 11:36 AM

His pricing is a bit weird to me. My cost on 20 highs and 20 longs is the same and even on sale they cost me a bit over $20.00. I'm not sure what brand he carries but there may be cheaper ones out there. Also, a lot of store sell tanks at a very minimum over cost just to get you to buy the rest of the stuff they have at higher markups. I normally sell them at $32.00 if they aren't on sale. I guess there are ways to buy direct from the manufacturer. Although both All Glass and Perfecto manufacturing swear up and down that they don't sell direct to retailers and that to get their tanks a retailer has to go through a distributor I know a couple of retailers who sell their tanks at prices below what my distributor has to pay so you know they are getting them direct.

Woo hoo!!! I just scored 6 screen covers, 2 of them with hinged tops off ebay for $60 (including the crazy 20 bucks shipping) not really so crazy when I figure petco is 20+ miles away, and I drive a SUV, so I'd spend 3/4 of that on gas, and petco wants 20 bucks a cover.

The total was 2 non hinged covers for 20 longs @ 8 bucks each, 2 hinged covers for 20 longs for 10 bucks each, and 2 covers for 10 gallons at 4.75 each:D

Total investment works out like this, 20 bucks for a tank, 10 for a cover, 30 bucks for a nice snake house is not bad at all!

I got a couple of 20Ls. I was wanting a 40 gallon breeder or 2 though :( hopefully one will turn up on craigslist sometime.

I desperately wanted a couple 40 breeders, but the sale only included 20 tall, 20 long, and 29 gallons.

The 40 breeders were still close to a hundred each, I can buy a lot of wood and glass for that, and build much better housing.

After reviewing my receipt, Petco charged me 15 bucks for that little 5.5 gallon.

However, they miscounted the 20 longs by one tank, in my favor.

so in the first trip we got 2 20 longs, a 20 tall, a 29 and the 5.5 for under a hundred bucks.

second trip was just 20 longs, and they counted correctly that time.

Normally I am honest to a fault, have even been known to go back into a store to point out that I got more than I paid for.

But since it was fish from petco that most likely killed my 3 snakes, I figured a free 20 long was the least they could do for me.

Here you go Wayne. :)

I am not done yet, still putting animals into the tanks and getting everything arranged the way I want. A few cage decorations will be added too.

I still have lizards in a few tanks too- eventually the plan is to move them somewhere else and have these 36 tanks house one of each species/subspecies of native snake in my collection. I hope to label each tank.
I'll keep upgrading tank sizes as needed- might end up putting the smaller snakes into the 20's someday and putting the larger ones into even larger tanks. Luckily, many of the natives dont get real big.

4" Flexwatt runs under the rear of the tanks(10's and 20 longs), hooked to a Herpstat ND proportional thermostat.

I also still need to get all matching bricks. :) Big bricks for big tanks, small brickes for small tanks. Gonna lose the encyclopedias too.

Then some under shelf flourecent lighting...

Very nice Loren..

At the moment I'm trying as best I can to keep all the tanks in the "display" orientation, Close to impossible with 36 tanks:eek:

How big is that room?? bottom row, second over from the far right, what is that in the tank?? the zebra stripe looking thing..

Those lids are sweet, nice work:D Since the frames are wood, you could easily fabricate latches that grab up under the frame of the tank and eliminate bricks.... (just a thought)

You have a very steady hand to do those cuts with a circular handheld..

Very cool about the indigenous species display, almost there myself.

When I first got "bit" by the snake bug I had little money to spend, so I slowly collected one specimen of each species that frequented my back yard.

Very nice Loren! I still love your lids! I like them better than anything I've seen commercially!

Thanks- I was fortunate enough to have a buddy give me 8 full sheets of really high quality 5/8'' fiberboard, which also has a very nice outer surface.
I have been building shelves and lids with that wood for 2 years now and still have a couple sheets left.

Well, I'm back to reply your comments better- was in a hurry this morning.

The one down side to my arrangement is that the animals arent displayed as well with the tanks set with short side facing you. But, its the only way to fit them all into a 9' x 15' building. I have snake racks for the other snakes and rodent racks/tubs on the other side.

The position they are in also makes lid clips difficult as I cant reach the back outside of the 20 longs too well. My weighted lids make for really fast in and out feeding.
I hand them their food with a 24" long hemostat. Almost all of them accept food right from them.

For cutting like this you need a steady hand with a strong grip. Cutting like this with a circular is very dangerous, as sometimes the blade starts fighting you and wants to kick back. I have been told by a carpenter that its a good way to get hurt. I try to keep my body out of the way.

I love natives, and hope to soon have at least one of almost every legally obtainable species from my state, with the exception of a couple that are extremely difficult to care for due to only eating slender salamanders(2 hour drive to find those) or lizard eggs(then again, I do have a few leopard geckos I could breed...). With some, I will have more than one subspecies as well- depends on the species, the law, and how much visual difference there is between the subspecies.
I would love to put on a few presentations being able to state that I have the most complete collection of natives you will see outside of a zoo. (other than the protected ones)

I started out growing up on the family dairy, catching mainly gopher snakes, and the occasional valley garter. Used to always have 3 or 4 gopher snakes around. I'd keep them for a while, let em' go, and catch another. Had a 3' x 3' x 3' home made cage in a shed that I kept them all in.
Actually raised a baby goat in that cage once too. (without the snakes). :)

Here is the reptile building from the outside. It was here when I bought the house, but I remodeled it to suit my needs.
Foam panels rated at R-13 cover the windows, the walls are 1.5" thick concrete and stucco with R-13 behind the sheet rock, and the ceiling has 6" deep of blow in insulation which I spread out by hand. The door is a new prehung door from Home depot- also insulates well. It has an air conditioner set to 80, and in the winter a space heater on a timer. A digital thermometer records min/max for me at 2 locations.
Also a big fan blowing diagonal down from the ceiling to keep the top/bottom within 2 degrees of each other. I added something like 14 outlets. It runs off 2 - 20 amp breakers(2 walls per breaker), and has 12 gauge romex throughout. I added flood lights for the yard while I was at it.
So, I have been busy the last 2 years. :)

That is extremely nice. OK awesome:D

When we got this house there were 2 living rooms, both 12x18 so we use the one with the main entrance as a living room, and the one with the big bay window for the animals, its a shame, I blocked off the window so nosy neighbors cannot see in.

One day I want to build a jungle room in the basement, it's 24x50 down there with 8 foot ceilings, would love to build a 18x18 room, dirt floor and grow lights, then we could take the animals in there during the winter.

My next dream would be a 20' by 40' or 50' building in place of the existing one, with one part of it just big enough to park my Camaro, a supply closet/washroom, a brumation room, a feeder room, and an isolation room, and a big enough animal room to display all the animals at childs eye level in like 40 gallon tanks or so.

That will be a while. :)

By "a while", I mean like 30 years!
