I'm sure you all get tons of these posts, but you have no idea how happy I am to have found an experienced garter group. The internet as a whole has been entirely unhelpful.

So far, I've used this site (http://webspinners.com/coloherp/index.php) and have decided that it is, in fact, a garter, but I'd like to narrow down the species, if possible, to give this guy the best care possible. My little snake was found in Boulder County, in Colorado.

It looks like it could be a wandering garter snake, Thamnophis elegans vagrans.

Welcome and have fun here :)

For me it also looks like a wandering garter (vagrans). But it seems greenish colored, never seen it in these colors... Do you have some more pictures?

After checking to see what kinds are known to be found in Colorado I would say it is a Western Terrestrial. Here (http://webspinners.com/coloherp/geo/species/spethel.php)is a link to a photo of one.

Well.. "Western terrestrial garter snake" is the name of the species, T. elegans. :p It's technically correct.
