second chance babies:D

so everyone wants a second chance right???? and last night i got mine....... after the sad passing of sooty's babies... i just wished i could go back in time... and a few of the members reminded me that i did have a second chance.... and so i decided to keep the gravid wc female and last night she delivered 22 beautiful babies....:D

it was really funny timing actually.... i had just come home from camp and there they were.... they must have been born only hours before my return!!!!! but what really surprized me was the mother..... she was and is still so thin that her skin was literally folded appon its' self.... but she ate none of them.... i was so amazed when i took her out so that i could collect the young... she was so weak.... she was almost limp in my hands..... i was surprized she was alive........ :rolleyes: but she was the first to be fed.... then i had to kidnapp my friend from down the street (at 11:30) so that she could help me feed all of them.... and clean up the big mess.... she was happy to help because she loves them.... she wants to keep one so bad..... esp. after i told her that i wasn't goingto keep any...... but her mom who used to be a snake lover herself claims to have developed a fear of them..... i dont understand how that could have happened.... but apparently it did.....

so anyways.... she rushed over and helped me feed all 26 of them....... and amazingly out of the 22 babies 20 of them ate even though they must have been less than 4 hrs old at that time!!!!! and one of the 2 that did not eat bit on to the food but didn't understand how to swallow it.....:confused:

but they are all happy now including the adults who are happy to be back in their normal cage:D i will keep the mother until she fattens up a bit and the babies until i feel they are fattened up and eating well....:D

thanks guys.... and i will do my very best to get these guys ready to be released.... :D

but until then they will def. not go outside!!!!!

and even better on the timing part i had just bought a 20 gal fish tank at a garage sale for $5 last weekend!!!!!

but i went down to the creek yesterday... and unf. there were no toads left that were small enough for the new borns..... :(

and worse yet what i did find was a huge (at least 3 X my size) dead dear in the middle of the creek!!!!!! and it's stuck there!!!!:eek: i have no idea how to remove it!!!!!:mad::rolleyes:

and to my complete disgust my parents told me to go down there and throw rocks at it until it falls apart and floats away!!!!:eek:

they sure are!!!! all 22 have eaten for the seccond time in a row!!! but i dont know when to let them go..... i want to let them go at just the right time..... time of day and in good weather....... they are all growing like crazy....:D

They're adorable Shanley! I'd think mornings would be the best time, but I've heard evenings, too. My thought with mornings is that the nocturnal predators are all tucked away for the day, but then there are still birds, etc. Hmmmm... :confused:

my yard has 4 parts: upper field
steeply sloped woods
lower field
flat woods edging the creak.....

all the parts are about 1/4 a mile long..... where should i release the snakes?

i have to release- 3 adults
22 babies
and 2 yearlings

o i forgot..... there is also a pond wetlandish area about the same distance from the creek as the sloped woods

The adults were all caught in the field, right? How close is the field to either the creek or the pond/wetland area? I'm assuming since there's still water in the pond and the creek right now that they stay wet all year? Are any of the areas further than any of the others from neighbors, roads, etc?

I'd lean towards the wet areas for the babies, and back to the fields for the adults/juvies if that's where they were found... I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to say, though!

Shanley, I would release ech of the older one where they were found and the babies near the creek or pond, which ever has the most cover for them to hide in.

2 of the adults were caught in the field.... but it has been completely mown.... and so there is MUCH less cover now.....:confused:
the other three adults were caught up bu/in my yard and we have some crazy neighbors who mow their lawns every stinking day....... i wouldn't feel comfortable releasing them that close to lawns, roads ect....... the creak and the pond are both full of water year round and have about the same amount of coverage...... which is better flowing water or still water??? there is about 1/4 a mile between the pond and the creek.......

it went great!!!:D it was kind of sad bc i had had them for a while... esp. big mama, but it was too much and they didn't like being enclosed.... it was time.

i released all of them in the pond/wetland area, i felt it was the best place to do it, perfect environment with ample food, i have pics but need to go to swim practice and don't have time to post them.....

and to top it all off i saw 2 new snakes on my way back up with the cages:D it was a truely perfect day for release:D
