Good job Reed. Very nice snakes.
I just went herping myself- out in the high desert for 2 days and nights. Saw 5 longnosed snakes, 7 great basin gophersnakes, a night snake, a panamint rattler, a bunch of sagebrush lizards, a desert spiny lizard, and western fence lizards.
Still no desert striped whipsnake, which is what I was looking for.

Very nice finds Reed!
If you were at the spot I think you were, that is out of the Diablo Range Garter Snake range. The snake would be an aquatic intergrage, Thamnophis atratus intergrade.
check the page; Thamnophis atratus intergrades (http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/t.a.aquaticus.html)
The other "unknown grey snake" was probly a C. c. mormon, yellow bellied racer. I've seen them out there before on several times. Too fast to get ahold of usually:o
Coluber constrictor mormon (=Coluber mormon) - Western Yellow-bellied Racer (http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/c.mormon.html)

That area is out of the "pure" range of the Diablo. It has to be an intergrade. Look @ the pic of the adult intergrade from Marin County on this page...
Thamnophis atratus zaxanthus - Diablo Range Gartersnake (http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/t.a.zaxanthus.html)
Just trying to help you out;)
Jerry
BTW, I thought you were going to get ahold of me next time you went to "the spot"? Maybe next time we could meet up out there:cool:
