Let's make general comments about this month's photo and caption competitions here, to keep the competition threads free of general talk.:)

ohoh...I'm missing a tailtip in the picture...

This is going to be a great contest this month!

Sorry, mine isn't the best picture I've ever taken, but I don't have many 'full body' shots, and I know I won't get the chance to take one this month!

Its a good picture James! It shows the snake, it shows his/her true colors and the setting is natural! What more could you wish for? :D

adamanteus

It would be better if it were in focus!:D

True, but as you know, practice makes perfect! And it could always have been worse :D

There is no sample photo this month, but I'm sure you get the idea! Not really. How much is supposed to be visible?

adamanteus

The title is 'The Whole Snake'.... there's a bit of a clue, I guess, Stefan.:D
Obviously, there will be many shots where one part of the body is obscured by another part, I daresay that would be acceptable. But not if the snake is partly hidden by plants etc. It seems clear enough to me, should we ask Shannon for clarification?

I think it would be good get some form of clarification. I assume, though, that the point is that the whole snake should at least be in frame.

Does everyone have wonderfully natural-looking habitats for their snakes, or is there a way of training your garter NOT to run away as soon as you put it down on the ground?

I'm having enough trouble getting Archie not to strike at the camera...

let them calm down in your hands first
then when you put them down cover them with your hand until you feel that they have stopped moving get your camera ready then take as many as you can b4 they get away

Thanks, Kevo! I'll bear that in mind - although I may have to wait until my little worm gets big enough to find again before I risk losing him, hehe...

I'm always surprised at how quickly the wild garters in my yard can totally disappear in the grass (well the smaller ones at least).

Okay guys, I missed this thread....

but here's the deal. The title is the whole snake, so all that means is that the whole snake needs to be in the picture. If a tiny tailtip is cut off, that's okay, if the snake is coiled that's certainly fine, if the snake is half covered by grass or substrate, that's no good. my point was to observe their beauty as a whole snake and not just their front halves like so many of the photo's that we take. I felt that the whole snake is a little more of a challenge, anyone can hold their garter still to take a picture of their top half, anyone can zoom in to get a shot of half the snake peeking over a log, but to get the whole snake takes more patience! I only saw one photo that does not fit the criteria, it was a snake that was half buried in some grass.

I hope that makes things a little more clear!!! My goal was to keep it extremely simple so that EVERYONE can participate, no matter what camera you have!
