Amanda, those ribbons are very handsome snakes, someday I hope to have a couple that look as colorful as those 2.
The Dekayi certainly looks like a nice gal with a wide body for carrying babies.
Looks like she survived a run in with a lawnmower, scar seems as if the wound healed well.
Your not going overboard, as long as you can provide good care, a few more mouths to feed is no big deal.
Of course that is how us snake junkies justify getting another:D
I think they all will look a lot better in your care, and a few sheds have passed.

Aren't they? I saw the pics and my mind went: *MINE*
They look like 0.2 but the yellow stripes tail looks very long, but they are ribbons... And the red stripe has a shorter tail that appears to have been cut off. Based on their size and width I would guess 0.2. To bad they 'aint 1.1 but oh well! Two good females and a decent male to get later works for me!
Well goodie!! Thats what I thought and hoped. A cute little girl dekayi!
I think scars are cute! ;)
*snicker* We are just obsessed is all! *whistles* ;)

it can be caused my malnourishment, if its wc you need to be watchfull for infections if it is just a cut.

What can be caused by malnourishment? That scar?
infernalis
07-31-2008, 08:26 AM
I am more inclined to think that scar came from a lawn mower.
That's why I always mow during the hottest nastiest part of the day.
Sucks for me, but the snakes are all hiding in the shade while the mower is running:D

I agree, at least on the one on the left. It looks very similar to mine(also from south texas), same shades of color and all. Not sure about the other.

08-12-2008, 08:43 PM
I will do scale counts when they get here. I can't think of anything but orarius... Will let you guys know!
Loren
08-12-2008, 11:43 PM
The one on the right could be t. proximus diabolicus - western ribbon, Arid Land subspecies- also from texas, and has orange stripe.
Depends on where they were caught.
drache
08-13-2008, 04:38 AM
when are you getting them?
GartersRock
08-13-2008, 11:10 AM
I am getting them today.
They where caught somewhere along the coast I guess...
I am thinking the yellow stripe is orarius. And the orange stripe is either proximus, or diabolicus like Loren says. Or possibly an intergrade?? Will do counts as soon as I get them!
And I just realized that the Brown snake is Storeia dekayi texana! Does anyone have the Texas Brown Snake? Sweet!
GartersRock
08-13-2008, 02:33 PM
Ok, so I will be picking them all up at 6 pm.
Final count:
0.1 Gulf Coast Ribbon
0.1 ? Ribbon
0.1 Hypoish Texas Brown Snake
0.0.2 Baby Rescue Checkereds
0.0.1 Yearling Checkered
And I will be getting the 11 checkereds soon!

Well! I got them!!
And with several unexpected ones too. I was also given two yearling checkereds and 2 Western Ribbon babies!! The two ribbons are MASSIVE MONSTERS... I had NOO idea ribbons got this big. The western (what I am pretty sure the orange stripe is) is MASSIVE. There is super sad news to share though...... And I am a bit pissed off. I'll share later. Just hope and pray that the big ribbon will be ok and so will her possible babies...

Ok, just a sec guys! ;) I am emailing the lady who delivered them to me, then I will post here. Sorry for the wait. I was SUPER tired when I got home and had to deal with setting them all up and then I came out later and it was like, 2 am or something.
GartersRock
08-14-2008, 01:26 PM
Ok... Here is what happened. It may be long. lol!
I have figured that the yellow stripe is orarius and the orange stripe proximus.
So the guy who gave these to me caught them where he is from. He had no plans to let them go so I said I would take them. He lives really far away but he was going to be in San Antonio for two days while I was out of town, so I had him drop them off with a friend in Austin he was meeting up with anyway.
This is where I got pissed off. So before I pick them up, my friend tells me she is also giving me 2 newborn baby ribbons out of the big orange girl (they thought the yellow stripe was a male, and the orange stripe the only female, so they assumed the orange girl had the babies). She says that when the guy drove them to her they where both stuffed in a snake bag and when she opened it the bag was all bloody and she had had a dozen babies. All but two where crushed and suffocated. Grr......
Another example of the total disgregard for gravid females...
Now when we meet at a truck stop we pull them out of a bag they where in and I pull out the orange one (the one who supposedly had the babies) and she still seems REALLY gravid. So I am freaking out that she isn't done having her babies. AH! What am I gonna do.
So I get home. Settle them all in nice, clean cages. And set to work trying to figure out the species and what is up with all this gravid stuff.
I at first thought the babies looked like westerns and went to sleep hoping that the mom was gonna be ok. Expecting a bunch of stillborns in the morning.
I wake up. No babies... So I get to thinking. And wait?? I get a closer look at the babies. Compare the old pics of the yellow stripe gulf coast to the current state of her. Turns out the babies are gulf coast. Out of the yellow stripe assumed "male" who is now less back end heavy (I wouldn't say "thin" these girls are HUGE).
So, the conclusion is that:
1. The babies are Gulf Coast
2. The yellow stripe had them and is done having babies
3. The orange stripe western is very gravid which is why I thought she "wasn't done" when in fact, she never started. lol!
4. I am PISSED off!!!
Anyways. At least I got to the babies, the poor mom and the heavily gravid MASSIVE (bigger then an adult corn snake) western girl... Before her babies wher hurt or killed as well.
This to me is another example of not taking gravid females lightly if you don't know what you are doing. Just sad and a total waste.
The two surviving babies are healthy and spunky and eating!!
And of course I also have those two checkereds out of the hacked mom... They are healthy and eating as well!
The four "Miracle babies". I will never sell them and cherish these sweet things forever. ;)
Sorry if that wasn't as "interesting" as I may have made it seem to be. lol!
So pray for tons of live healthy babies out of the western!!

08-14-2008, 01:37 PM
well at least all the babies weren't dead but better care could have been taken into consideration
now just make sure you spoil them :D

Too bad about the ordeal those poor momma snakes(and those poor crushed babies) had to go through.:(
I'm glad you've got the survivors, and that when the next batch is born, they'll be in YOUR care. Best wishes with all of them, and I can't wait to see the pics when you get time!:)

Great news!! The 2 baby ribbons, 2 baby checkereds, and 1 of the yearling checkereds ate minnows by various techniques today!! Yay!
Today was SO hectic and I was only able to feed 2/3 of the snakes. I didn't try to feed the two moms. And I wasn't able to get the camera out. *sigh* But I can assure you!! It's all I think about and they will come someday. Ahh!!
