Nice pics of the two girls! The tank looks nice too, Kevin.
I'm surprised at how well a Tim Horton's bucket makes a temporary home. Doesn't look half bad!;)

I used to be the girl who put the chocolate icing on the donuts...........a-waaaaaaaaaaayyy back when.;)
Don't worry, she won't be lonely for long. From what you've told me lately, she should be ready to give birth very soon, and then she'll be able to live with other snakes again.

yup oh ya speaking of other snakes altho i am going to keep 2 males from the litter i was wondering if you would like to mate goerge with one of your baby males when they are old enough

As much as I like George, I don't think I'm going to be into breeding for quite some time. For starters, it's not something I feel I'm ready for, and I definitely don't have the time, money or necessary set-up for it.
Someday down the road maybe. I'm not really sure if I'd even be able to find takers for too many babies here in Canada. Without being able to ship them easily outside of this country, it's probably not a big enough market, unless you can invest in something really unique.
If I ever do try, it would only be to get melanistic, or flame.

well im looking to try and get babies that have georges' rusty body and that high red on the sides

Just don't rush it, Kev.
Breeding is a big undertaking. I've become pretty comfy with my snakes, but I still don't want to attempt brumation and breeding.
Although by the time your soon to arrive babies grow big enough, you should be prepared fairly well. I'm just not that confident for myself!

i understand :)
would be an interesting project eventually
anji1971
07-25-2008, 08:21 PM
Definitely. And hopefully someday there will be more demand for them here. One of my bigger concerns is being left with a pile of babies you can't sell or trade, and you really don't want to release all those captive born and bred babies out into the wild. It could get out of control very easily.

"Breeding is a big undertaking"
I'm sorry but she was already gravid. Breeding would constitute the placing of a male with a female with the intent to produce offspring.
This is more of an observed birthing.
BTW Kev, I surely hope that stero is never turned on, the vibrations from the speakers is not good.
The snakes may be deaf in a sense, but that woofer will stress the living dog doo out of your snake.

@Kev
thank you for sharing the picture of the bucket,
Iīve never seen a tank like that before.
@ Wayne
we had a big discussion about the meaning of the correlate to "breed" in Germany especially the meaning for garter keepers in comparrison to (maybe) the word "increase".
This is my result:
A breed has the aim to get better offspring than the forefathers were,
so you should reproduce for some generations or be part of such a project untill you can really claim to be a breeder.
BTW: German and English words often have a different spectrum of meanings so I canīt allway find the best translation for my thoughts

In Finnish we often use different words for breeding and simply having animals reproduce. Breeding would imply that you have a programme of some sort, which isn't the case when you just have them reproduce, even if you are trying to produce a morph by combining traits.
But people do quite often use the word "breed" to describe having an animal produce offspring. But in this case, I definitely wouldn't call it breeding.

was it hard to cut the window into that bucket?

here the word breeder has a wide range of meanings
it can even refer to humans that can't control their reproductive urges for long enough to use birth control, or even by gay people to refer to heterosexuals
I don't think serious breeders (with a plan) are differentiated here and it's possible that they're only a small percentage of those who "breed" in a more general sense
even people that are considered professional breeders don't necessarily have what I think of as an ethical approach - many of them are just into making a buck whichever way they can
it doesn't help that we live in a disposable culture and people are not encouraged to think about what becomes of their stuff down the line
by extension (and habit) that often gets applied to live beings
sorry about the small rant

The statement about breeding being a big undertaking was in reference to Kevin's long-term plans to actually breed some. Not about the gravid female he already has.

To me, a 'breeder' would be someone who was producing snakes (or whatever) in large numbers for resale and profit, and may not even have a particular interest in the genus. Although I have a growing collection of Garters and I hope some of them will reproduce in my care, I wouldn't ever want to be thought of as 'a breeder'.
I would consider it a derogatory term.

now that you put it this way . . .
it is true (exceptions apply) that the most vibrant animals I see, are the ones raised by dedicated "hobbyists" who don't have huge quantities of breeding stock, but a small group of well cared for choice animals

@anji and wayne what anji is is right i don't call letting a wc gravid girl give birth in my care breeding however i do plan on breeding george for her color in maybe 2 years or so. and also if the radio is ever on its not on loud and the sub is usually turned off.
@rhea it wasn't difficult to cut out the window i have a really sharp pocket knife
the difficult part was cutting through the top with the thick ridges what i did was mark the spot i needed to cut with a mark then gave it a goo wack with one of my decorative swords (was like a hot knife through butter) then i used my knife to cut through the rest of it pics below of the thick ridge part

It looks really great Kevin! And I want you to pay attention to something-- I've been meaning to talk about this but kept forgeting-- I have those polished river rocks in the Florida blue's enclosure. And they use that area as a toilet like you wouldn't believe!!!! It's almost like they're litter trained to those rocks!!! It's the weirdest thing. I'm dying to know if yours do it too, or if anyone else has experienced this!
