i have a fair amount of frogs but i cant sell them to you what i did is i found a pond it was very abundant with them and i bought a long butterfly net then to get the frogs i looked for frogs that were sunning themselves on the edge of the pond and i stuck the net out behind them then quickly trapped them in the net its not that easy to do you mis like 65% of the time but i wound up with 23
then you can toss the extra frogs in a baggie then into the freezer to freeze them then you have to run them under water \to unstick them and place them on a tray in the freezer to freeze them seperately after they are fully frozen they can be placed in a baggie again and they won't stick together

Don't you feel that is rather cruel to the frogs??

frogs may be a natural food source for garters, but isn´t it easier to switch the garters to tawed fish that you can by at the next food or pet shop?

tried thawed fish(didn't work) tried pinkies mice(he didn't even touch it) tried worms and slugs(he kept regurtating them) and haven't tried frogs yet and what kind of live feeder fish can i feed him the local pet store has guppies, rosy reds(out of the question),and goldfish(also out of the question),feeder crawfish(haven't tried it) and that's pretty much it and the only amphiabians they had were Bufo Toads,Cubean tree frogs, newts, tiger salamanders

Have you tried 'scented' pink mice? You may have to use frogs just once, if you can trick him onto pinkies. It will be much easier in the long run.

Spyro, how long ago did you catch the snake? I wouldn't say rosy reds or even goldfish  are out of the question short term. One meal of either one shouldn't hurt an adult garter. Depending on how long this hunger strike has been going on I would try the rosy reds and see if that'll get him started then you can switch him to something else. My guy probably lived a year or so on mostly rosy reds with an occasional worm before I knew better. What kind of prey is found in the snakes natural habitat?

Pinkies are euthanized humanely prior to freezing by gassing them with CO2
I tore into a guy on kingsnake who admitted to placing live pinkies in the freezer. The following several posts on that thread were all in agreement.

I've actually heard that freezing pinkies is humane? That they have some ability to hold their breath to avoid being smothered by mum, and that the CO2 just isn't effective?
Anyway, yeah, Spyro, if he'll eat the rosy reds then you can start scenting pinkies with the rosy reds and get him switched over. It worked well for my elegans, but I've heard they'll eat anything :D

well its just too bad i cant get those certain frogs that don't die when they are in a deep freeze but i also do not have the stuff needed the euthanize the frogs first besides they would have a slow torturouse death in the snakes if they were fed live anyway

Touché' and very true - the pot calling the kettle black:(

besides if i don't freeze them first there is also a chance that they could pass on parasites to the snakes not to mention i don't feel like buying them crickets to eat so they would have starved so either way freezing was the best option

I may have mentioned this before
all of the snakes I get from Scott Felzer feed on rosies
some of them I can switch sooner, but many end up eating minnows until they can handle an entire small pinky
I estimate that they eat minnows for close to half a year and I never had had a problem - never
I do try to switch them asap
but trust me - even several months of eating minnows is not likely to hurt your snake
