Last week, Kyle sent me six non feeding ribbons, they needed toads and polliwogs to start, and are now taking fish, while sitting in human hands, all of them!

http://www.danceswithreptiles.com/DK/1CR.jpg

Carmella our milk snake had frostbite that cost her a fair bit off her tail, she has now shed 4 times since this injury occurred, and I wanted to show how well it has healed up. (The bone was showing!)

http://www.danceswithreptiles.com/DK/1tip.jpg

Tonight after I got done cleaning out our water snake enclosure (Nerodia sipedon) "Aqua" I thought of putting a ground FX light that I saved from my old "pimped out" dodge neon under the tank. Here is what it turned out like.

http://www.danceswithreptiles.com/DK/neonerodia.jpg

The effect is surreal:cool: Like a lighted swimming pool.

thanks Wayne

what a sweet ribbon pic
I was trying to see whether I could get some small tadpoles as a last resort for my non-eating babies, but the only tadpoles to be gotten from the store are gigantic - bigger than feeder goldfish
what the heck are those
I grew up with little tadpoles, definitely smaller than guppies

that stump looks like the bone's barely covered
good job

the swimming pool shot is so very So Cal
it kind of triggers soundtrack in my head

According to the wikipedia article, their metamorphosis takes 12-24 months.

The tadpoles in my feeder tank transform in days.

the most recent ones are spring peeper tads. (tiny!!)

Every morning there is a bunch of micro frogs on the floating log.

Then the reluctant eaters get them.

Or Magma just dives into the tank, greedy little bugger!

Amazing job on that tail, Wayne! Any trick to getting the babies to eat out of your hand? That would be so much fun! Probably takes about the same amount of time as feeding them in a separate container which I'm going to have to start doing soon anyway :) Pretty cool swimming pool, too :)

Amazing job on that tail, Wayne! Any trick to getting the babies to eat out of your hand?

Pick them up slowly and when they are no longer startled by your presence. approach them from underneath and kind of scoop them up, instead of grabbing from above. as long as they are not feeling threatened, they should eat!

It's called "tease feeding" I hold the fishy by the tail, and coax the head of the fish in front of the snakes face.

It's FASTER than transferring them:D Just pick them up one at a time, feed and return them.

about half the baby snakes take food for me this way.

Just last night "Lurch" the wee little butlers ate from my hand, it was cool.:)

Very cool! Shannon so far my only snake has been my WC male who really doesn't tolerate handling well. He will rarely even take food from tongs for me and then if startled will spit it out...sigh... Thankfully he always picks it back up, but I'm really looking forward to raising captive bred babies to be more tolerant of handling!!! :D

Great pictures, Wayne!
Love the swimming pool -- very cool!!
And Carmella's tail looks good, must have been a pretty nasty wound for a while. Good job with her.
I've been having some success getting my nervous little Sweetpea to eat from my hand. She totally freaks out in the feeding bin, so it's the only thing that works. But she still won't eat very much each time, and she'll stop completely if she gets startled, so it's a constant battle.

What happend to your milksnakes tail?

On the night I found her, she was frozen solid, it was early spring the frost was heavy that night. If I remember correctly it was like 27 out.

I have been treating the tail with antibiotics to prevent infections.

She is a sweetheart, wild Milksnakes are usually biters, Not Carmella!! never even tried to bite:D

I thought it was a HE, but about a month after I brought her in, she laid 7 eggs!

The eggs are incubating now, fingers crossed for heathy baby milks.

Yes they are, and y'all are welcome to all of the bullfrog tadpoles we have out here in the wild! The American Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) is an invasive species here in California! It is threatening to wipe out our local baby garters, our smaller frogs, and our baby Western Pond Turtles! Lefty, my one-eyed garter is drooling just feeling the vibtrations of me talking about it.... okay not really, but I had a few beers at a work potluck, and uh, well you know... my fingers are slurring....

Nice pics Wayne. Whats your fish of choice for baby ribbons?

infernalis
07-26-2008, 07:51 PM
Well I have used rosies in a pinch, guppies and minnows work well too.

A local fishing supplier carries these small shiner minnows that are the same exact creek minnows garters eat in the wild, the ribbon babies like them as well.:D

Cool, thanks. I've been using guppies for my gulf coast ribbon babies so far. 7 of the 8 are eating. I need to try again this weekend yet.

The one that is not eating yet, try placing the snake and the guppy in a smaller container together.

I found some nice plastic sandwich boxes for a dollar, they work great.

Placing the guppy and the snake in the same small area for a while sometimes will annoy the snake enough that it will eat to make the fish go away.

Chomper is a Savannah Monitor Shanley,

I like the way he flicks his tongue the same as snakes do. Only Chompers tongue is HUGE.

When he grows up completely, he will be about the size of an Iguana.

When he is in a bad mood, handling is out of the question, he can hurt someone with his feet.

When he is in a good mood, he will tolerate us handling him just fine, he even holds still while Dorothy straps on his harness and leash.

When we take him for walks, every living thing that crosses in front of him, well he Chomps!

Crickets, grasshoppers, bugs of any kind, worms, whatever if it will fit in his mouth, it's gone!

If Amanda has a yard at all, Texas would be an ideal place to own a Savannah Monitor, Set up a paddock in the yard!

One of the top Monitor gurus around lives in Arizona, and has a ranch set up just for assorted monitor species.(Varanid)

Here in NY chomp only has precious few weeks that the temperatures are warm enough during the day to go outside.

As a former savannah monitor owner, all I know is that getting a sav is nothing to rush into. It takes quite a large cage and some cash in order to take care of an adult sav properly, and they go from that cute 8" baby to a 3.5 foot long adult(average) in about 18 months.
One of the better savannah books I have read (The Savannah Monitor lizard, by Daniel Bennett) recommends a minimum cage size of 8 foot x 4 foot x 4 foot, with the ability to dig his own burrows, and after having one for almost 5 years, I have to agree- I would never keep one again unless I could provide something similar to that. In a 2' x 2' x 6" cage, he had just enough room to "exist', and not enough to "be a monitor".
The kingsnake.com monitor forums can teach you a lot about them, the guy from arizona is "FR" on the forum. I wouldnt actually post though, as they tend to really rip into new prospective monitor owners, telling practically everyone that they are nowhere near ready for the huge responsibilty. They tend to be jerks, but their intentions are based on the good of the animals, and they do know a lot.

Loren
08-17-2008, 04:27 PM
I believe monitors are a "pet" for only a small percentage of keepers, but for those who are willing to take them on properly, they can be very rewarding captives. I provided mine a home that was better than most, but not good enough. I would love to see them stop being a "petstore" animal though. Too easy for inexperienced people to impulse buy them with no research. Atleast with an impulse buy of a cornsnake or something, people still have an honest chance of figuring it out in time, but with large lizards, most people just wont be able to do it. The average lifespan of captive monitors is probably under 1 year.

infernalis
08-17-2008, 05:38 PM
Rosco looked good!

Chomper is already kept to a far higher standard than most.

We have obtained a tempered glass panel that is nearly the 4 foot by 8 foot and 1 inch square steel powder coated framing. His permanent adult enclosure will be along nearly 2/3 of a wall.

We began (minimal) handling at a very young age, and his diet consists of roaches, crickets and live hopper mice.

Occasionally he gets some turkey cubes, it's easier to get him to dance with the turkey cubes:D

Yes Frank Retes is the monitor god, and he knows it, I look past that and listen to what the guy has to say. He has tons of useful information, even though he makes you feel 2 inches tall telling it to you.

We also have the luxury of all this acreage, something unfortunately many cannot enjoy, so this monitor gets exercise and lots of it.

They are absolutely not for the faint of heart, nor the inexperienced keeper. Before I would allow this purchase, I studied all I could so as to ensure that Chomper would not become one of those statistical dead animals.

Sometimes Dorothy gets mad at me, she says that Barney did just fine, But I wanted us to go one step further and have this one be in the most ideal captive conditions we were capable of providing.

For substrate we use river bank clay dirt, it holds burrows well.

Loren
08-17-2008, 05:57 PM
Sounds awesome Wayne. :) Glad to see someone putting in that kind of effort for a monitor.

Rosco was a great captive, just didnt live as long as he should have- made it about 5 years. He was a big puppy dog from day one. He went to several classrooms.

infernalis
08-17-2008, 06:14 PM
Any ideas why he passed on??

Dorothy's Barney was murdered by her ex husband (they were still married at the time) seems he was knocking Dorothy around and Barney jumped on him, cut him up pretty good.

So the jerk took it out on the monitor!

Loren
08-17-2008, 06:22 PM
Rosco seemed like he was doing ok, then one day, while I was in the reptile room, he put his head in the water dish for what I thought was a drink, and I saw bubbles coming out. I pulled him out of the water, and could tell he was on his way out. He passed a few minutes later. I didnt "take him apart" to try to find out why.
Atleast I got to rub his back a few times and say good bye.

You know Wayne, I'm sure you could condition train him like you would a dog(or any other mamal or bird). It would help keep that little brain of his busy.

Like you need more to do.. hehe... I would give it a try, tho. Just a few minutes here and there throughout the day. Pick something he does naturally and everytime he does it give him something really yummy. Then put a hand signal to it. Once he's reliable at that start something new.

infernalis
08-25-2008, 10:24 AM
That's exactly what is happening right now. When he responds to me calling his name, he gets a bit of food, if he stands up and does a tripod, he gets food.

It is my goal to allow free roaming of the house when he is an adult size.

He will most likely always need the harness and leash when outdoors, they run really fast, swim even faster and climb:eek:

If he ever made it down a gopher hole, I'd have to dig up a lot of ground to get him back.

Hes a big star!!!

What does he eat?

Anything that moves, or smells bad:D

Mice, crickets, roaches, worms, Turkey, snakes, dog food, eggs....

Monitors are the ultimate carnivore, they are very dinosaur like, he thinks he is a velociraptor.

Before anyone judges, deformed or stillborn baby snakes, I could never feed him a healthy snakie.....

If he were to escape in the reptile room, it could get real ugly fast:eek:

The nightmare of him knocking over tanks and eating everything that gets out is chilling.

He is only 5 months old and is 22 inches already.

No not much blood, he would swallow them whole, I think him and Cain would have a fair fight though:eek:

Now there is a movie script "Chomper Vs. Python" sadly it would be done in silly CGI (harryhousen stop animation would be cooler)

He is a handsome fellow, He will be a few feet when fully grown,

That is Dorothy, Chomps mom, and yes he actually seems to crave the interaction, also if we don't "socialize" an animal like that, you wind up with an evil meanie that will hiss, tail whip and bite.

There is a trust that must be earned, and begun at a young age. I bought him as a wee hatch ling.

Loren has posted photos of Roscoe, That Savannah was 5 years old and could give a good idea of an average size adult.

Try to google search under "Images" type in Savannah Monitor, there is some great pictures.

She is a plumper Kev, Once she turned that around and took it down nose first, it was no big deal.

I have a couple garters big enough to eat mice, and by the looks of things my radix girls and the blackneck will be on mice as adults.

Keeps feeding inexpensive, a couple medium size mice a week, and they are happy snakes.

I'll upload the photos after she ate this.

I have spoke of "Rusty" before. He just shed and his pattern really shines right now.

I found this guy last summer out in the mud bogs.

The pattern struck me right away, the rusty red and those spots, Very dark maroon (not typical black)

Not sure if these traits would breed on though.

He is a smallish male and lives in a 20 long with a couple Dekayi girls. They all seem to get on fine.

I find that on a couple of mine too!
After feeding Deejay, you get to see all the red tones and checkers that are otherwise hidden, but on Chili, it actually stretches it all out and completely ruins the look. :D

When we see a Savannah Monitor in a pet shop, they are usually this size, that alone is misleading to the potential buyer, some pet shops fail to tell you they grow to be as big as they do.

The snake eats, but only a sliver of food a day, I had to move him to a small critter keeper by himself, so the bigger siblings would leave him alone.

Glad I can trade them for some guppies or crickets, I'd hate to feed those ones off.

Everyone is eating frozen/thawed now, so it makes more sense to barter the mice out anyways, Especially since I am hooked on my colonies.

A nice lady today gave me 2 deluxe cages, 2 exercise wheels, six water bottles, 6 food bowls and a bunch of rodent toys:)

She said I could have them for free as long as I could use them...

I call that a bargain!

Going to get a breeding pair of Gerbils now, to start non feeding Ball Pythons with.

awwwe that poor little dekay's :(

I lost my one baby garter that was lagging behind in growth like that. Eventually he was 1/3 of the size of the others and was still eating, but only small amounts and was just not growing! I hope he pulls through for you!!

As for the mice... yea they are VERY cute but I still would have no problem handing one to a snake. No insults intented at all, I am just extremely indifferent to small furry things

I won't lie, I did have a rat as a pet once, she was cool!:o Her name was Tina.... she was supposed to be food but the snake would not eat her, she was a weanling, was going to put her down and freeze her.... but she started suckling my hand... and then she ate a cheerio... and then she cleaned her face on my palm....ughhh mommy intstinct kicked in

Trust me Shannon, I have whacked my fair share of rodents on a solid surface, But the truth is simple math...

The pet store pays me enough to buy 3 frozen rodents to each live one I bring in.

So the end result is more snake food for the dollar:D

considered african soft-furred rats? BP's LOOOVVEEE them, and they are the widely accepted food to use when a BP is a nonfeeder. They are more like mice than rats though....

gerbils are cool too though the thing that stinks about breeding them is that they are monogamous... they choose one mate for life and if that mate dies or you take it away there is a really good chance they will not accept another. Oh yea, and don't pick them up by their tails... or they will drop them!

I like the abstract look, the nose is in focus, and it gets blurry after that.

We had a huge hill on the farm where I grew up in NY. I remember the fun ride down and the looooooooooong walk back up. lol

What is that?? A snow-cycle? I've never seen such a machine!

Some aftermarket company makes the kit to convert a dirt bike into a sled.

It looks like it would be a total riot.

Out of my budget range anyhow.

When I was young and foolish, we would tie the water ski rope to snowmobiles, and I would wear cross country skis, then have my brother pull me around really fast.

Thanks Pinky.

I took this photo of Chomper last night after he had a nice warm bath. He just loves it when we fill up the tub with warm water and let him swim in it.

Dorothy was drying him off, and as she "pet" him with her finger he was closing his eyes, I assume the fact that he closed his eyes means he was liking it.

He does the same thing when either of us rub his chin.

Just look at him... all the guy wants is $50 and some reasonable proof that he'll be well cared for... sigh... no wonder they fly out of pet stores to be mistreated by the general public... they're just so darned cute! This guy has other monitors and seems to know his stuff, but is getting rid of all his reptiles due to circumstances :(

With my new web space and the use of a really good scanner, I dug these old photos from 1997 out.

Believe what you see, these morons actually brought these animals to a Motocross race with THOUSANDS of spectators running around, many drunk.

Do you think this is animal abuse or just an innocent day at the track?

When I asked them why? they said to hopefully be on TV!
