Wayne is Limon a Liochlorophis vernalis borealis, smooth green snake?

No Michael, Limon is a Cyclophiops Major, or Giant Asian green snake.

He is about 4 feet long and eats night crawlers.

Aww, he is a cutie!
No chance you can accommodate him? If he doesn't grow too fast, maybe you can, over time, work on a suitable "grown up" house for him? Just a thought, I really don't know enough about the critters. How fast do they grow??

FAST.

My savannah monitor was 18" long and 1 pound- at an estimated 8 months old when I got him. 12 months later, he was 36" long and 7 pounds. He topped out at 40" long and about 8 pounds.

Tami- I know they are tempting- but dont do it without some serious consideration. :)

Glove size XXL Kevin.

7 1/2 inches from wrist to tip of middle finger

Carmella is nearly 3 feet long, but not really big in the girth department.

The 9 egg clutch would probably indicate an adult.

But judging by her extreme lack of cunning, she probably did not eat well in the wild.

I figured he would, so I got a plastic bulb that runs on 12 volts.

It stays cool, makes nice light, and it is safe for him.

Ace was happy to go out and play, check him out.

In this first picture look at the shadow, Ace is probably 2-3 feet up off the ground. (He bounces like tigger)

There is a young man from down the street who hangs out alone in my woods all the time.

I'd wager that he was responsible for the snow man.

I ran into him once and asked why, he said it keeps him out of trouble.

As long as he does not harm anything, I am pleased to keep him out of trouble.

His father passed away a couple months ago (An old school friend) so he "hermits" a lot in the woods lately.

Not often that kids in their middle teens are content just walking around in the woods alone, I never found the enjoyment in that until I was around 30

Usually when I find kids in my woods, they are up to no good.

So this fella is kinda like my "security guard"

I was looking at craigslist (snakes, Seattle/Tacoma) was real shocked to see how many people wanted to dispose of them. People really don’t realize the commitment to any animal when they take them in as a pet.

Shameful really…..

Agreed.

Very sad, And Ball Pythons go for a "dime a dozen" so when some kid asks for one, mom and dad give in.

3 years later the kid has lost interest, and the snake suffers for it.

One day soon we are going to get another from a semi-local animal shelter that gets them and iguanas fairly regularly.

Considering how many become "Lost souls" we will NEVER purchase ANY from a pet store.

Last night I read a "bicker" thread on the KS Monitor forum (seems to be the only kind they have) about walking monitors on leashes.

Lots of opinions both for & against.

As soon as the "against" folks started talking about hot asphalt and scaring people, I quit reading.

It makes me glad to live where there is so much land and woods available.

I can't wait to take him back outside, He enjoys eating everything that moves, he's like a vacuum cleaner with legs.

He "marks" the territory, funny to watch, he runs from tree to tree and drops a small load:eek:

When we get to the creek, he is an excellent swimmer, although he has never shown any interest in eating aquatic life.

Out in the open, worms, slugs, grasshoppers, crickets, whatever moves he runs right up and inhales it.

I really hope to build him his paddock, I think it would be great for him to have a big escape proof pen in the yard.

I know what you mean.

When I went to Brasil, I helped Roberto paint his house. It was kinda neat knowing I left something behind.

I am thinking that since monitors are burrowing animals, I'll have to find a way from keeping him from tunneling too deep.

I think that (hope that) since it gets colder the deeper down he'd go, that the temperatures would deter him from going down more than a few feet.

adamanteus
02-04-2009, 06:17 PM
I would be tempted to consider digging down a couple of foot and laying a steel mesh, then re-fill and tamp it down. As you know monitors are mini excavators!:D

Took a couple pictures last night. This time from my tank in our living room.

These are the snakes that have been here the longest...

First up the snake formerly known as princess. (he's a boy, so I just call him Prince, Samantha called him "Princess when I first caught him)

A couple months ago I dropped the tank cover on his head, thought I was going to lose him, the scar is just under his left eye (visible in the photo)

http://www.dekayi.info/snakies/prince.jpg

And of course my sweetie DK Xena, she always gets in the way when I take pictures in that tank. She sees the flash and scoots right out...

Soon I plan to video Xena, All I have to do is put my hand in the tank, and she will scoot right over and many times climb right on, hoping for a "lift".

This girl is so sweet, she seems to want to be held.

I don't know what to make of it, but it really does appear that she likes the attention.

The day the cover dropped into the tank, I felt so awful. Prince's face swelled up, and I thought the poor dude was going to be messed up for the rest of his life.

2 shed cycles later he is close to normal again.

It's one thing to lose a snake that is fairly new to the collection, but I have yet to deal with the loss of an old timer.

Chief my wild caught red phase eastern adult has passed:mad:

He went off feed, and chilling him did not bring back his desire to eat.

Diana his cage mate looks rather lonely (Yes I know, she most likely does not miss him, but I have grown so used to seeing them interact with each other, now she just sits there)

Fingers crossed that maybe they bred.

No new cage mates for a while, just in case he had some sort of parasitic disease, she will remain alone until I can be sure it has not spread.

Don't worry, there will be personal visits to the reptile room.

I have been pondering that concept, and in all fairness I will limit the number of people allowed in there at any one time, Not that I am remotely worried about any theft, but 12x18 will seem rather small with a half dozen of us in there at once.

Thanks everyone. Hey I know this is probably weird, but it was fun just to see the kids get excited with fascination.

When pinky shipments arrive there is always a big block of dry ice in the box.

The kids are off school this whole week, so I did a simple demonstration that left them in awe.

I broke up the dry ice into medium size chunks and placed one in a bowl of soapy water.

http://www.reformedsniper.net/3/foam.jpg

Little Raymond is 6, he just thought that was the coolest.

After a few minutes of blowing bubbles, the sink looked like this.

http://www.reformedsniper.net/3/fog.jpg

Samantha wanted to put a chunk in her glass of pop, I told her no way, Maybe this summer when we can do it outside, but not in the house.

The reaction would make a big mess.

All I know, is that bullfrog tadpoles are huge. :D

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/Bullfrog_Tadpole.jpg

Usually, but that all depends. There's an interesting adaptation they have. In warmer water with low oxygen, they are prompted to metamorphisis sooner, and at a much smaller size. In cooler water with plenty of oxygen, they can take up to three years before becoming adults, and of course, much larger young frogs. I did a little experiment to prove this, by hatching eggs and keeping them in to different tanks under different conditions. In the warm deoxygenated water, I had tadpoles as young as 3 months old, and only about one inch long, turn into frogs. Their siblings, in the cool oxygenated water just continued to become larger tadpoles. Most turned to frogs during their second year as a large tadpole. A few didn't turn into adults until their 3rd year, and the process (sprouting back legs, then front, etc.) was very slow.

The small one's that turned early, were frogs just one month after sprouting their first legs. Pretty interesting I thought. Sounds like an adaptation that would allow them to survive if the eggs were laid in temporary water that was quickly drying up.

I know, old post, but I thought you might find that interesting. I did.

Watching this one unfold in person, we are experiencing a dry spell and all the water holes are drying up, so the bullfrog tads are morphing really small and quite early to compensate.

I wish I knew of a spot like that...

I mean, shallow pools filled with amphibian larvae... a virtual smorgasbord for my snakes. (of course, I would freeze them for a couple of months first)

I used to know of places like that but they're all gone now. Fed a concinnus pair for 20 years like that. There was no shortage of WC food for them. Now all I can find is places with lots of small bullfrogs but they're too darn hard to catch!

About the green snake... I bet even though you haven't found them in a long time, they were there, very well hidden. I've had a similar experience with rubber boas in my county. They are here, they are plentiful in some places, yet in spite of that, I've found very few over the years.

Those snakes you got there are soooo awesome. Just love the look of them.

According to the wikipedia article, their metamorphosis takes 12-24 months.

It's true.

November 26 and there are still tadpoles in a standing pool out back.

I just got one for scenting purposes with a net.

They must go down into the mud over the winter. I'm not sure how they survive freezing, the water pool is too shallow to not freeze solid.

We had the same thing the two years before that! Tadpoles in November! In the kids pool outside. They just never grew. In fact, we had emptied the pool and brought them all inside in the hopes of at least getting them to the frog stage. We had luck with that part but they would die soon afterwards.

They must go down into the mud over the winter. I'm not sure how they survive freezing, the water pool is too shallow to not freeze solid.

You pretty much have it right. They survive the same way turtles and the adult frogs do. Somewhere down there, deep in the mud, it does not freeze solid. Decaying organic matter produces heat. Go deep enough into the mud and it stays above freezing even if all the water is frozen solid. Just like turtles, their need for oxygen is essentially zero at those cold temperatures, and any minute oxygen needs for frogs/tadpoles can be taken care of by absorbing oxygen through their skin and turtles metabolism essentially stops and they just don't need oxygen. Same way a would be drowning victim survives longer without brain damage if the water is extremely cold. Bullfrogs (and other amphibians) have a sort of "antifreeze" in their blood that prevents their fluids from forming ice crystals which would expand and burst cells. In other words, they can survive being frozen solid and being essentially clinically dead. No respiration or heartbeat.

I could cut just a cluster like the lower picture shows, and put it in a vase in my living room or bathroom and it will exude fragrance throughout the room for days. The bloom season is short though. 3-4 weeks in late spring. By June my lillies bloom and those are very powerful. One or two cut blossoms in a bowl of water will exude a very sweet smell that travels long distance through the house, for up to a week.:) Beats the heck out of "Glade" any day.

up, the milk snake became defensive, her tail was buzzing the ground and she held her head in this "cocked and ready" stance like she was going lash at me at any moment.

The garter snake just sat there chilling out the whole time like nothing was even going on.

He spent nearly all day back by the creek eating slugs, snails and worms.

He threw a tantrum when we brought him back in the house, he was all puffed up and hissing at us. Soon as he got in his cage, he parked it right under the basking lamps and went to sleep.

Look close on his snout, you can see the orange slime from the big slugs he was eating.

Chomper is a Savannah monitor...

Absolute minimum requirements before I'd ever recommend one.

a cage 8 feet wide, 4 feet deep, 4 feet tall filled with 2 feet of clay soil.

A functioning roach colony, and deep pockets to pay the huge electric bill from keeping the cage hot and preferably own your own home since most landlords would never allow one.

Life expectancy when properly cared for is in the neighbourhood of 25-30 years.

Irrelevant - Keeping wild animals captive is keeping wild animals captive no matter how you chose to look at it, spell it or justify it.

They are not "domestic livestock" none of them.

When I said "irrelevant" I meant irrelevant to the point I was trying to make. You're making an entirely different point. Just because one keeps garter snakes in a tank does not suggest that he should also keep, for example, an alligator in his bathtub "no matter how you chose to look at it, spell it or justify it."

Keeping a Savannah monitor properly, is not an alligator in a bathtub.

awesome! I have had Kisses, my largest carpet, since I was 16-17ish. I love carpet pythons... they are like the perfect python. Not too big, not too small, not too boring, active and curious, and the ugliest they will ever be is the day they are born. Not like those darned ball pythons that are born gorgeous and brown out like turds!!! :p

I now have 4 carpets:

I just had to share this.. Yesterday I was down by the creek just walking around when I happen to notice a nice little eastern garter, approximately a second year snake.

I crouched down and kept eye contact on that snake for quite a while, it crawled up over several downed tree limbs, through some rocks and grass, periodically stopping to assess it's surroundings.

Crouching there watching this free roaming wild snake go about it's activities was really fascinating.. I kept my movements to a minimum so I don't think the snake saw me at all.

This little one covered a lot of ground quickly, and it honestly looked as if it was exploring, taking in the sights, possibly looking for that perfect basking spot or meal.

After several minutes the snake wandered into some brush where it blended in perfectly just as I lost eye contact.

Oh and the day before I caught a yearling water snake taking advantage of the receding water in the creek. Pockets of minnows are getting trapped in small pools, easy pickings for fish eaters.

Where can you get green snakes. I heard that we are sopposed to have them here but I havent seen any. I want to catch one and keep it. I saw one in a garter snake book (i forgot the exact name ) but that one is so awesome. I think it might be cause my favorite color is green.

From what I've heard, green snakes are extremely hard to take care of. I think I read something about them dying unexpectedly. That might have been something else, though.

Green snakes are a heartbreaking disappointment.

They all have special dietary requirements that people cannot seem to copy in captivity.

Then they die well before old age sets in.

Well, not necessarily. They can be kept. They are very hard to keep, and only have 3-5 year life-span, but it's possible to keep them. But I wouldnt reccommend them to anybody.

The problem with green snakes is most people try to feed them crickets all the time. I kept one in a huge tank with lots of plants and branches and it fed on smaller crickets, roaches, and hairless caterpillars and i had it for 6 years before i traded it for a garter to a friend. I think the exosceleton on a diet full of crickets all the time is just too hard on them. The hairless caterpillars are the way to go but they are not easy to get all the time. Thats why they are found mostly in trees because they love caterpillars.

That's all I could have said. Don't only feed crickets etc.

Ive never kept one, but I have so many near me, I learn a lot about them, including captive care. I know people who have them.

I was just saying that, even though it's kind difficult, they can be kept successfully, to their expected life-span. (5 or so years)

It's a lizard leash, but I bet he could break the clips right off the cord if he really wanted to.

I only use the leash to follow along behind him.

Only once in all this time have I ever had to yank back on it, someone started s dirt bike nearby and the engine spooked him.

and of course, I never take him anywhere near pre existing burrows in the ground.
