:(the local pond had a abundance of frogs, worms, and small fish, and of course.....garter snakes. the local children have kept at least one or two garter snakes. But now something horrible has happened. they have been feeding there garter snakes a lot of frogs and fish that there is pratically any left. the reason why is because they taken more frogs to feed to there snakes before the frogs have time to reproduce as for the fish. so now the garters still in the wild are only eating worms and few little fish. so the neighbors have got together and made a law for the neigborhood(permission from the mayor)that no child nor adult shall take any wildlife from the pond for 3 years. so now all they can do is just take pictures.

Well, isn't that good? Why the unhappy face?
And why not you or you get someone to give programs at the park (if the pond's in a park) or programs nearby and talk about snakes, ecology, balances, etc.?
God bless your neighbors and the mayor. I hope you enforce the 'law' and help out to make sure balanced populations come back.

It's unfortunate that it had to be done.

LOL! :D Stefan, you crack me up! The King of Understatement and Chief Head Devil's Advocate. :D
Look at the positive side, it *was* done. There goeth some unsnakey kind'a folk who actually care about snakes and an entire eco-bio system in their backyards. They're practicing that which you preach.
Thank gods there are some people out there with their heads on straight.

That seems kinda harsh...
How old were they? Did they know any better? Kids are pretty clueless in general...

Lyris, don't ever take Stefan seriously! He's our resident Eyore, ever searching for his tail. :D

But, he's our Stefan. LOL! He can only be who that he is. ;)

well some of the kids were around 10 or 11 the others were 9 and below
and one kid had a pacman frog that he fed it garter snakes:mad:! out of all things garter snakes!(i hope it dies from the parasites that the snakes probably carried and even more he would sometimes freeze a whole bunch of them in there deep freezer:mad::mad::mad:! so now all the other kids and adults who care about the snakes have banned him ever coming near the pond or any garter snake found in the area

It's not really something that would piss me off. What would piss me off, is that a good spot for all kinds of herps was ruined.
And that's something that has happened to me twice this year.
- A neighbour used herbicides to ruin a good frog/grass snake spot for me, now there's not a single living organism there. No live plants, no insects, no frogs. Nothing. It's a genuine environmental crime, by the way.
- My mother owns a small piece of property together with her two sisters and it's an excellent place for finding lizards, adders and grass snakes. Now they've cleared all the undergrowth and rocks from the absolutely best spot. If you saw the little adder in the Nature Photography thread, it was found there. As owners of the property, they had a right to do it, but it still pisses me off that they did.
About 95% of the pictures I've posted featuring a reptile were taken in these two places.

I'd be upset too Stefan:mad:
Now picture this, you know I own some swamp lands, a few weeks back Dorothy runs into the house and tells me to get the keys for the truck, there is motor noise coming from the woods!
We dash back to the swamps to find this 17 year old kid in a 4 wheel drive truck, buried up to his axles in MY swamp!!!
It was not a pretty sight:mad:
Dead polliwogs, oil slick on the water, the damage his tires caused, I stood back and let Dorothy have him!
The trail way he used to get in is now barricaded to prevent any further trespassing. (Bolstering the local economy, since I had to buy the stuff to barricade the trail:rolleyes:)

I think destruction of habitat is what upsets me the most as well.
The area I go is very close to where they are building a huge new arena, and I have been very disappointed the last couple of visits to see how close they are coming to the water sources with the construction. They are building a road right through the middle of the place, and all the excess soil is being piled up within a hundred metres of the pond!
Who knows how many hibernaculums, and other small animal homes have been bulldozed or buried in the process.
All I know, is that the snakes are avoiding the pond now, I'm sure they've all spread out into the quieter areas. But I worry greatly that this is only the beginning.......:(

I think I love you Stefan :rolleyes::D;)
Wayne, as someone who really enjoys going four wheeling, that guy in your swamp really pisses me off. I hope Dorothy drilled him a new one. There is a way to enjoy your four wheel drive vehicle without doing any damage... or very very little, depending on which activist you listen to. Some say disturbing the dust on the trail causes damage  but anyway, it certainly can be done with very very little impact to the surroundings. My entire reason for loving the activity in the first place is to enjoy the natural surroundings and idiots like him ruin it for all of us
As for the pond... it is sad indeed that it needed to be done and while they say three years, here in california that would mean forever. Hopefully the pond will recover and that is the most important thing. If tadpoles and frogs could be found in nearby ponds I think Wayne's idea of stocking it is a very good one. Just make sure they're the same species that were once there. Very sad situation indeed...
