My wife found 10 of these little ones in the cage last night. Loren said last week that she looked like she was gravid. I guess he was right...LOL!

Thanks all!
Because of California law. I can not sell the babies. I can only gift them out to California Residence. I am sorry to those that have asked already. Although this was not a planned breeding, I already had enough people say they wanted babies if she was gravid. Sorry, I wish I had enough for everyone:(

;) for all of you non Cali Residents
Hey Jerry - found my way here. So far the two babies haven't fed, but they don't appear to have shed yet so maybe it will take some more time. I tried very small earthworms - no dice. I tried guppies - they seemed drawn to the movement (in a very shallow dish; just enough water for the guppies to flop around) but still no feeding. One of them seemed drawn to the movements of a cricket in an adjoining cage - I thought "way cool; if they're going to do crickets this will be a cakewalk." But no; when a couple were placed in their cage they didn't want to eat them. I'll try again Sunday.

Hi Peter, and welcome to the forum.:)
Don't bother trying the crickets again, they won't take them. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.

Hey Jerry - found my way here.
Welcome Peter!
I gave them some feeder minnows today. My wife watched some of them eat while I was @ work:D Maybe I will seperate the ones that ate in the morning. I think once they eat, I will make everyone come pick out the ones they want. You already got the "Pick of the Litter";)

James, I guess even you can not read every post...LOL! It says "181 unread posts" right now & I was on this morning:eek:

Well, this little guy is looking good- color is really coming in nice.
He has eaten a couple meals of pinkies and one of trout, so far. Cant wait till he's big enough to go in a display tank (I use 1/4" mesh for the lids, so they have to grow a bit first).

Loren, I am jealous as well. My infernalis has a "mean" look to him.
His temperament is sweet as can be, just something about him looks ominous.
Yours looks darling in comparison:D
Inferno (The name I chose for mine) has blue stripes, yours looks a little more greenish yellow.
what is the more common coloration? or is that like asking what color a "Normal" sirtalis is:eek:
That's a great looking specimen you have there!

Very nice!
The markings on these are so different than the other Thamnophis species'. Instead of checker patterns, it looks almost like paint-drippings down the sides. Quite dramatic. I like!

WOW! It is doing good!!! Eating pinkies & growing good. I guess mike picked out a good one for you. I thought about holding one back, but I did not want to be over my limit. Besides, I have my hands full with what I have already. I have tried to get the adults to eat mice, but unlike the coast garter, they were not intersted. You sure do good with your herps, Loren. Beautiful infernalis! So. Humboldt CA Red-sided Garters do not have the clean-cut pattern borders that the Bay Area has! Further north (beginning at south of the Klamath River) we have fitchis with fat black heads with just a touch of red on the cheeks. Partial hybridization is also suspected with the elegans clade (ordinoides may be suspect, but chances are not likely), as many of our sirtalis have ventral red flecking and diffused patterns.
Here's a few of our sirtalis!

I have a few more examples following this. Hope to have more examples soon. The SIGHTINGS page on the THAMNOPHIS page linked from the NATIVES page which you get to from the main index of HumboldtHerps has globs of local garter pics! Aw heck... Just go straight there!

I love this guy Steven! Looks like you took an elegans and splashed a bit of red on him :) Are you coming across these high yellow markings often?
Steven@HumboldtHerps
09-03-2008, 07:38 PM
So far I have only stumbled upon a few of the yellow stripes in Del Norte County. Bold white or yellow stripes do show up on fitchis and elegans.
Right now it appears that a lot of fitchis are doing their late summer / early fall get-together. It is not uncommon for some garters to mate both in the spring and autumn. I believe they may carry the young until the spring thaw (which would explain some of the small neonates I occasionally come across in the spring).
It's good to be back on the forum.... but the homework beast calleth now.... :(
