Some are obvious, some less so. I have one snake covered in spots, his name is Spot. Magma is red like lava, Melanie is Melanistic, Sky is blue, etc...
I have a hangup with clever suiting names, Where did your snakes names come from?? Why?

Pickles: I've collected Beatrix Potter for over 35 years. Besides writing The Tale of Peter Rabbit, she also wrote a book called The Tale of Ginger and Pickles. Ginger was a cat, Pickles was a dog. There you have it.
Mayo: She's my rescue Pigglette and is the poster child for aliments not wanted in Pugs. She was originally named "Mya," and I didn't like that. Wanted to keep her new name close to what she was used to... And figured Mayo goes well with Pickles...
Moreraity Dickens, The Artful Badger (The Dog; Dickie-Dog): He's a cat. But acts like a dog. When he was just a puppy I chased him around the house for three days screaming, "You LITTLE DICKENS!" He's a classic tabby, "more rare" than stripped or mackeral tabbies, and when I saw him at the pound he was sitting up on his haunches like a little turd or badger.
Can you tell I read a lot?
Wes, my other classic tabby - a rescue - got his first shots on March 21, the anniversary of my parent's wedding and my mother's death. So I named him after my father (couldn't very well name him "Kate"). His full name is Wes, Mr. Mouser. Only cat of mine that's ever caught a mouse.
Neon, Kid's Blue Neon of Aten Ra, was named by his breeder after a race horse. He's a blue Aby.
Puddy, is a shortened nick-name of his nick-name, "My widdo puddin' head." He's a ruddy (usual) Aby and his registered name is Aten Ra Went Back To The Future.
PeeWee is a red Aby, Puddy's daughter. I never registered as she's way too small to have used in my program. She's no bigger'un a minute. She's my widdo PeeWee! :D
Kenabec, my Hoggy that's coming, is named that because that's the Ojibway word for snake.
Peepers, my firstest garter coming, has got THE CUTEST, BRIGHTEST 'peepers' in the world! Shiney little button eyes!
And Jeepers, my secondest garter coming, got named that since he's coming as a 'bro' to Peepers, the word's found in the same song as the word peepers describing eyes, and he'd be likely to yell "Jeepers!" if frightened since he's shy.

Lets see. I'll do garters/ribbons only so the list isn't too long. lol!
Anakin Solo: Star Wars *rolls eyes*
Jaden: Star Wars again *rolls eyes*
Zipper: A friend that was with me when I caught him named him. lol!
Kieran: Star wars. *rolls eyes yet again* lol!
Jin: TV Show Lost
Sun: Tv Show Lost
Checkers: I caught this checkered garter 8 years ago. Was the first snake I ever caught or kept. I let her go after a year or two. 6 or 7 years later I FOUND her. She has distinct markings on her neck and the tip of her tail is cut off and has a distince scar. OMG. I will always have her now. ;) So of course, my VERY first snake had a very generic name. Checkers. =D
Olive: Because she is an olive green tinted checkered
Chess: Same friend that named Zipper named
Claire: From TV show Heroes
Corran: Star wars. Again...
Elle: Tv Show Heroes
Niki: Tv Show Heroes
Sylar: Tv Heroes again
Peter Petrelli: Heroes, again.
Kate: Tv Show Lost
Snowberry: I have no idea. But it's kind of brings a cool visual. Like pastelish. Even though I am sure that real snowberrys are probably not that color. lol! I just like it.
Sawyer: Lost
Desmond: Lost
Penny: Lost
Rachel: From Ted Dekkers Circle Trilogy Books
Silvie: From Ted Dekkers Lost Books Series
Mikil: From Ted Dekkers Circle Trilogy Books
Ok. So you can see that I like naming from media. lol! I won't do all my "other" snakes. Unless requested. *shrugs*

Mikhaila and I usually have to come to some kind of agreement
so here goes:
Sammy: is actually Samantha - totally Mikhaila's choice - named after a doll
Chloe: named after Terry's (stonyloam) dog
Whizzy: used to be Thing 2, but because of the way she'd hurl herself off our hands unexpectedly, she became Whizzy Thing
Thing: used to be Thing 1
Chica: something about the way she looks . . .
Simon: totally Mikhaila and I don't remember why
Boyfriend: he was purchased to be Sammy's boyfriend
Don: purchased from Don when I still thought Sammy was a vagrans
Slither: well . . . - does do that
Momo: after a character from a book by Micheal Ende
Spunky: first impression and still accurate
Maya: Mikhaila's choice
Mesa: the colours of native jewelery
Runty: I had trouble figuring out what he likes to eat at first
Radix: well guess what species . . .
Jackson: Mikhaila named that one and it suits his personality
Blueberry: I think someone here came up with that one

This is cool! 'Rock, name the others!
I forgot Winnie!!! Winnie The Poo. She really was my first ever snake, but... Not "mine" mine.
Rhea, Whizzy, Spunky, Runty, Boyfriend, Slither - great names! Those are my favs.

Slither/Sly- our one and only garter. Since I have two boys the snake ended up with two names. They just couldn't decide and since snakes can't hear I figured why argue? They are still both used on a regular basis, but I tend to use Sly.
Louie Louie- our "big boy" Great Dane was already named by his breeder, but he loooooves when I sing him *HIS* song :)
Tinkerbelle aka Tink- I thought it would be fun to have a Great Dane named after a little fairy... Tink had her name maybe 6 months before I heard that Paris Hilton named her little rat-dog Tinkerbelle. Thought about changing it, but Tink's name fits her personality quite well! She really is the perfect definition of a "female dog." ( btw, nothing against chihuahuas. We call them treats on feet. :D )
Granite- our steel grey kitty. It's probably my favorite name out of the bunch.

Slither/Sly. Love it.
But I agree, Granite ranks up there with Magma and Sky. Great names.
Tinkerbelle is precious for a Great Dane. As would be PeeWee, I think! :D
I just thought that Archimedes would be a good name for a snake...and then someone shortened it to Archie and it stuck!

Sorry...
Yesterday was the one month anniversary of my dad's passing. It was a really tough day for all of us. I didn't think it would be too bad, but then my mom got upset and... well, it's downhill from there. Had breakfast with mom this morning and all seems "ok" for now. It's a rough process, that's for sure. My dad had his first heart attack at 42 and passed away in his sleep at 62. 51 is so very young. Hug your GF for me and let her know I'm thinking of her.

Okay... here GOES. I am very adamant about naming every snake... but not until I find the eprfect name that suits them... here are some of the names I chose.
Radish- my female radix's name. I brought her home and I said MOM!! I FINALLY GOT A RADIX... and she says "shannon why the hell did you buy a radish you hate them"
Dishwasher- a small ratsnake that escaped for 3 months... and one day I heard my mom screaming.... cause there was a SNAKE in the DISHWASHER!! haha!!!
Bandit- He's a cali king. It's obvious :D
Stubby- whacked with a lawn mower.
Popeye-His eyes are HUGE.
Bluebie- my female puget... shes blue!
Shooby- she passed away, my first garter, but shoobies (shoebies is actual spelling) are people who wear shoes at the beach... it was a random world I found hilarious.
Shiggles- my mom said to me "did you buy that snake just for sh*ts and giggles?"
Okee and Dokee- okeetee cornsnakes. my mom started calling them that and it stuck.
Po- I went to see Kung Fu Panda in theatres, and the panda's name is Po. My little BP with the funny face looks like a panda... hence I named him Po!
Nanasplit- he has yellow patches on his sides (the banana) and his whole back looks like the strawberry and pineapple toppings you put on a banana split. the name suits him SO well.
Snickers- I was eating one when I decided the snake needed a name.
Snub- has a funny shaped nose
Satan- my baby black racer.. name says it ALL
Kisses- my loveable female carpet python
Clementine- is orange as can BE
Miss Hiss- my female pine... hisses softly the entire time she is handled. not aggressive, but hissy.
Sledge- my hognose <3 he was my valentines day gift from my boyfriend, and his last name is Hammer, and I already told him no we are not naming any of our sons that.. so "our snake" got the name!!!
Smoothie- looks like one.
Tightie Whitie- looks a lot like a pair of them!
Spicey snake- I sold him, but he looked like he was made of all the color you see in a spice cabinet.
Cinnabun- a baby ball that reminds me of a cinnabum when he's curled!
Tony- the tiger ball! he is fully banded.
Wham Bam- a really MEAN baby ball... never stops striking.
Sharptooth- remember the Land before time movies? well my one ratsnake has a trex shaped footprint on his head!
Oddball- a little ratsnake that insists on being different.
SapSucker- my male Yellow belly ball. My mom loves to call people she doesnt like "yellow bellied sap suckers".... and as soon as i told her what he was she said that!!!! haha!
okay... I have many more names... but lsiting them all will take until the end of time!!!

Ah, Shannon... Just HOW MANY snakes do you have??????? YIKES! And are you from IA, per chance? My friends 'rents [parents] also use "yellow-bellied sapsucker" in the same way and they're from IA.
You've a HOGGY! Eastern or Western? Any tips you can give me on taking good care o'Kenabec? He's a Western.

Thats why I named certain ones.
Melanie - I don't really care about the name, but it sounds "Melanistic"
Magma - We already named one snake "red" so I had to think of something red.
Spot- Self explanatory
Casper - white
We still have over 20 without names, and expecting litters up to another 50 snakes, so names would be brutal to try and do.
We also have a policy, no name unless we are keeping IT:D

Yes I must say names are silly! Snakes are deaf, but lo and behold... mine all have names anyway! It works when I say to my wife, "Honey, would you refill Zipper's water bowl for me???" And yes, it's often a descriptive name...
Zipper-CB aberrant desert phase CA King
Obsidian-CB Black/Desert King intergrade
Penny-WC aberrant coastal CA King
Blue-WC Coast Garter
Salmonbear-WC Northwestern Garter
Lefty-WC one-eyed Oregon Garter
Snakie-CB normal Corn
Jory-CB reverse Okeetee Corn
Luna-CB snow Corn
Lily-CB pastel motley Corn
Jupiter-CB hypo motley Corn
Lucifer-CB sunglow motley Corn
Annie-CB anerythristic Corn
Ringo-WC Northwestern Ring-necked Snake
Sharpie-WC Sharp-tailed Snake (highly original! LOL!)
Shai-halud-CB Kenyan Sand Boa
Splitz-WC two-tailed Skilton Skink
Suma-WC San Diego Gopher Snake
Hopper-WC Pacific Treefrog
Heidi-Guyanan Pink-toe Tarantula
Chuck, Stella, Whitie, and Gimpy- our breeder rats
and of course Panther the black cat
Just plain silly!
Steve
All are Northwestern Garters
Stripe = A single stripe morph
Red = nice red top stripe
Midge = size about half way between red and stripe
Five = fifth born (one of five that lived)
Wi = Why did I catch you and not the one with you

Thats about how I name mine- they each have a "name" that I use in my records that describes them enough so that I know which one is which, mainly when I have more than one of a species. Usually refers to a physical trait or to the location they came from. Otherwise, they are just named as to the species. I dont call them by their names though.

Most of mine are named by the kids.
I've got Deejay. She was the only baby of my first garter, Dojo (named by the kids after a little dragon in one of their cartoons.)
When I asked them to name the baby, they, with their infinite creativity, came up with Dojo Jr.
We shortened that to D.J, and later, I decided I liked the way it looked all spelled out.
We have Chili, so named because of all her spicy colours.
The babies are Checkers, for obvious reasons.
Inchworm, because for a few days he got around more by squishing upwards like an inchworm than actually slithering normally.
And Sweetpea, my shy little girl. I started calling her 'Sweetie' and/or 'Peanut', when I was handling her, so I just kind of combined the two, and it suits her perfectly.:)

Snakes:
Tilly - originally Matilda, I just liked it... But we found out it is a boy so we call him Tilford now.
Kist - amelenistic corn, looks like the color of Sunkist pop
Mo = Mojito - puget that is a minty green color
Dogs:
Cooper - mutt - has really dark eyeliner around his eyes like Alice Cooper
Halo - mutt - We bailed her out of jail (the pound). In Monopoly the "get out of jail free" card has the little man with a Halo over his head and wings. That is how she got her name...

Current snakes:
Elle -- A Wandering garter (of unknown gender) caught late summer 2000 about 10 miles away - the name Elle is derived from elegans.
Go-go -- A Great Basin Gopher (of unknown gender) caught 18 May 2002 between 1½ - 2 miles from my house - Go-go's body language says, "I want to go, go, go-away"; or else "why don't you go, go, go-away, hiss, hiss." Also, the first 2 letters in gopher are "G" & "O"; hence, Go-go.
Previous snakes:
Snakey Lakey -- My first snake, ever. A garter or ribbon snake caught (by my mother with my butterfly net) in the early 1960's near Big Sur, California; kept for about one year then released back in the Big Sur area (back then we didn't know any better). This snake was named after a snake in a story, that I had written in the first grade - before I had ever seen a real snake.
Nake -- My second snake. A California Kingsnake caught in 1966 or 1967 at the place we were boarding our ponies, in the Las Altos Hills area of California; they didn't want any snakes on the property. I released 'Nake in 1968 or 1969 in a park in the hills west of Palo Alto. Of course, Nake is simply snake with the "S" dropped.
Buzz -- My third snake. A gopher snake (probably pacific) caught in the early 1970's swimming in the river near Rio Vista, had an attitude and a nasty temper. S/he would hiss and shake his/her tail, making it sound like a rattler's buzz. This snake was, also, released though I don't remember when or where.
Gar -- My fourth snake. A garter I bought, sometime in the 1970's, at a pet store, possibly T. s. fitchi, but not certain. Gar is simply the first 3 letters in garter. Gar got mouth rot and died. :(
Ulysses -- Another garter nominaly belonged to my youngest sister, who named him/her. Ulysses was usually called Lyssie, and lived with Gar.

Koskiuszko because we drive across the Koscuiszko bridge on the way home and it goes so well with the first name and isn't the spelling fabulous?

Is there anybody who can give me an extra hour per day to miss less of these?
Only my breeders have names like:
"Wilde Hilde"= who allways were so wild on feeding time in spring
"Rotbäckchen"= my first red sided with red makrs on the side of her head
"Amelie"= my first amelanistic ´parietalis
"Hetwig"= the mother of "Amelie"
most of my names have a hidden or second meaning (somtimes from a special spelling) that belong to a characteristic of the specimen

On topic though, I have only had one snake that has ever had a name and he has had probably about a dozen of them.
When I first got him (a 12 foot albino Burmese python) I took him to my sisters kindergarten class and of course all the kids wanted to know his name. I told him that he didn't have a name yet and that if they wanted they could come up with a good name for it. His first name was fluffy. He has also been known as Banana split, sunflower, mr squeeze, lemonade and several others that I forget. One that sticks in my mind though is the name one of my employees gave him "Sarah" don't ask me why. She knew it was a male but she named him Sarah anyway. Its the only reptile I have owned that has had a name.
My nephew has a rabbit that he keeps in my store and he named it Hopper so I just started calling him Dennis. (the rabbit, not my nephew)
I've thought about looking back into mythology and stuff like that to come up with clever names but I just never get into it.

one time a friend I was walking with, ran into one of his friends, he hadn't seen in a while
his friend was in a rush, so they just exchanged a few sentences and as the guy walked away, he yelled back over his shoulder "call me"
my friend yelled back "call you what?"
as to new names in my zoo
you've met Rorschach - who needs an explanation?
and I'm contemplating "Babe" for the new florida blue - to inspire her to grow big and blue

Pickles (Pug), named after a Beatrix Potter dog character.
Mayo, (Pug), changed from Mya - which I didn't like - and goes with "Pickles" because everyone thinks I named him after the pickled cucumber anyway (sigh).
Morerarity Dickens, The Artful Badger (muttly cat), because he's a classic Tabby - more rare than stripped, is a little dickens, and took Dickens further with Artful Badger because he can sit up on his haunches like a badger. Usually called Dickens, Dickie-Dog, The Dog.
Wes (muttly cat), also a classic tabby and named after my father.
Kids Blue Neon of Aten Ra (blue Aby), I didn't name him - his breeder did - and he's named after a race horse.
Aten Ra Went Back To The Future (ruddy, usual Aby), I'd hoped to take the breed back to an older style, away from the very pointed heads of today. Always called Puddy, Puddin'-Head, Pud.
PeeWee (red Aby), never registered and called PeeWee because she is.
Sly (muttly cat), stipped tabby. And he IS!!!
Peepers (NY Common Eastern Garter), has big eyes.
Jeepers (NY Common Eastern Garter), goes with Peepers.
Kenabec (brown phase Western Hognose), a native MN snake and is Ojibway for "snake."
Niizh (green phase Western Hognose), is Ojibway for "two."
Two Puget Sound Garters from Alaska given the Inuit names of Kunikpok "kisses," and Tungortok, "is blue."
One Puget Sound Garter named 'Rockster after GartersRock.
One, soon to have Eastern Milk Snake, sex unknown. Will be named after his/her mother, Carmella, and so will be Carmello or Carmella II.

Can't believe I've added four "family members" since this thread started and lost two :( Need to change my siggy too I guess :(
Frick & Frack... hybrid "mutt" brothers from kyle.. hubby started calling them Frick & Frack and it stuck. I love it! I often call Frick "smudge" though, because instead of a full block up by his neck he has a tiny bit of a black block and then a smudge. It's the only way I can tell the two apart!
Ella... T.e.elegans... Gertie named her and it suits her well :)
Chance... ok, this is going to be long, sorry... Chance is a border collie/maybe pom/maybe long haired chi mix that we got from the pound in '98 on the day he was to be put to sleep.. hence the name. He's an awesome dog, gets along with anything and everything and all of our Danes were raised with him, including Tink. For whatever reason, Tink decided that she needed to take him out of this world and nearly succeeded. I still can't figure out why a female dog would go after a neutered male dog that she'd been raised with. We placed Chance with my parents who had always threatened to steal him anyway. It was a nearly perfect solution. Chance spent his days hanging out with my retired father, we still got to see him, and were able to keep Tink. Tink became more and more aggressive over time, soon after targeting our cat(again that she had been raised with) and then last summer she went after a person. My dad passed away in June and my mom has been trying to take care of Chance and I thought things were going ok until about a month ago when my mom said she just couldn't handle his care. He was really matted, had fleas, and wasn't eating well... and at nearly 12 years old just deserved so much more than that... It was a tough decision, but we finally decided to bring Chance home, knowing it was likely a choice between him and Tink and that placing Tink was not an option. Tink spent a weekend in full stalking mode, drooling and shaking because she knew Chance was here, but couldn't get to him. We placed Chance in his crate and let her come smell him and she immediately tried to attack him through the crate :( I took her in and had her put to sleep Monday. It was a month and a day after losing Louie and I'm still really torn up about all of it, but know we made the right decision. For the first time in years it's peaceful here... and we all deserve that... not only Chance. Sigh... off to change my siggy... have been putting it off...

Oh, Ja'Tam... I'm so very sorry. I really think, from my heart, you did everthing you could - giving all a chance - and doing the best you could for all, as you could, under all circumstances. Hard, hard decisions. But I feel it was a good normal progression and you put much more thought into each and every move than the normal pet 'rent would.
Bless you. Try not to cry or feel bad. You did great.

Thanks for understanding Gertie.... Tink was four and a half and we had decided that we would just continue to manage her here. She was an absolute love to me, hubby & the kids... totally wiggly, kissy, yep... just a love... but she was also a huge liability and a huge burden. No one else could watch her, couldn't take her out, couldn't board her... then the thing with Chance and my mom came about and it was the only decision that could be made. Even before needing to take Chance back I had talked to my vet about her, talked to dane breeder friends, and talked to a wonderful great dane rescue person who has been in the breed for decades and they all suggested putting her down...she was truly one of the few who just wasn't right from day one. It still sucks, tho :(:(:(

It may suck - it does - but you didn't cave in in the beginning. You hung in there doing all you could from get-go, working with a not ideal situation, doing the best you could for all invloved.
And when it came to a hard decision, you looked at all options and went the way best for the most.
My opinion is you went way out there and perfomed as many wouldn't and I would hope I would. You did the best for all involved, to the best of your ability. Not easy at all, but I think very equatible and the best for the most.
Love you, kiddo. What you did wasn't easy, but to me it was the best of a bad situation.

Oh no. My condolences Tami. It's always tough.
With winter fast approaching we are face with similar circumstances.
Kaja a cat my daughter rescued in Pittsburgh and then brought home developed a urinary problem early in the spring, just started peeing on everything.
I set her up with a poly dog house and heat, banished her to the outside.
Cannot bring myself to leave this old gal out there to tough it out ALL winter long.
However the second I let her in the house, she will wee wee all over my furniture.
So now we just count down how much longer:(

Aww, Tami, I'm so sorry. I know how tough it is. I've had some here that were just "off"... no way to know what was wrong, but they would also just snap & go Cujo from time to time. What can you do?? You give them the best time you can for as long as you can, but let them go before they kill something... it's sooooo hard. Hugs.

Yep, Chance is happy as a clam. He's Lassie like in the way he watches out for my kids and is soooooo happy to be following them around again :) Once when the boys were about 4 & 6 we took him and the kids to a lake. Chance hated the boys being in the water and would just run up and down the banks whining at them. After a few minutes of this he took all their toys, one by one, back up to our truck and was like "ok, time to go home now!" lol Yeah, he's going to be spoiled rotten for whatever time he has left! He still acts like a puppy, so I'm hoping for a few more years!
Wayne, I'm so sorry. Could you set him up in a pen in the basement or something... but then again, what kind of life is that? I so feel for you...
Oh, and sorry to say Lori, she already had... her first victim and only casualty was the neighbor's chihuahua. Tink was 9 months old when the elderly chi from next door snuck under the fence and Tink got her :( She really has been an odd one from the first week I brought her home. We did puppy kindergarten & obedience. Part of the problem with Tink was that I couldn't read her...and I'm typically very good at reading dog language. She gave no warning, no barks, no growling, no hair up, no "eye", nothing I could figure out. She would just suddenly lunge.... anyway... again, sorry for the thread jack.... and thank you all for your thoughtful responses... ((hugs))

I used to know a border terrier like that. Although I only ever saw it behave violently towards people (I might still have a couple of scars to prove it), I did hear that it would occasionally attack its own mother as well.

Thanks Stefan... I have scars like that, too, but not from Tink. Shanley, I stopped walking Tink after she first went after a person a year ago. When I thought it was just dog aggression I would walk her without a muzzle, but I kept very good control of her. After the incident with a person the only contact she had with people outside our family was the vet/staff and I did muzzle her.
