same question
I'll answer that after they arrive:)
They are siblings, so if I successfully start them off, I would be happy to trade a couple for compatible babies.
I personally will not breed siblings, that is a personal choice, I believe in using unrelated bloodlines for healthier snakes. But thats just my opinion.

try small worms...a lot of my non-feeders have gotten going on worms. I have had real good luck feeding pinkies to worm eaters. also, I have used guppies in clear deli cup wate dishes, sometimes they want moving food to attract them. I would be interested in a pair if they start eating. got a male anery already.

Thank you leannne
Thats the whole deal, I made a very acceptable trade with a breeder for non feeding babies, they are otherwise very healthy. I happen to have the time, patience and some food items available to me that some folks cannot get.
If I have to start them on amphibians first, I'll try that. Baby night crawlers, James' suggestion on warming them up a tad in a humid environment.
And if all else fails, force feed them a reptile milkshake of pureed fish and vitamins.
Hopefully a little luck and patience will pay off.
Good luck with them, Wayne and keep us posted on their progress.

What a very nice thing to say. I feel extremely flattered.
I also felt that under the circumstances, it was a calculated risk, yet not an impossible challenge. I won't need all 15, so several will get traded out once they are eating good.

Well the math can be worked out. I don't think anyone would have issue with splitting permit fees. If we can organize it in a way that what we get/send back is a minimum, cost shouldn't be huge.
Say, a single pair or flames for England, or a single pair of wanderings for Sweden. And from there they can swap. I think Canada is the only concern. I don't know if they can take back from the US.

Lumpy, why limit what we send our brethern? If the permit will allow a bazillion babies, we should send as many as we can. Isn't doing this for the snakes, too? Just think... We can infuse their lines, they ours. I, personally, wouldn't want to limit. If we're gonna share, lettuce share. LIke one big happy familly! :D

James, I love you, too! :D That's a high compliment coming from you/
I've been doing this kind'a stuff for years. I was a publicist at the Hazelden Foundation, working with their authors. I'd set up way cool neat author events all over the country. More recently I've been doing stuff like this for the park. I established about five partnerships, one being Saturday's shindig with MAS (Minnesota Aquarium Society). I'm a natural marketer because there's a two-year-old trapped in my head, "Why?" "Why not?" "What if..." "How about..." "I bet if we..." And stuff like that.
James, if you want help on working on this and setting up sumpin' for next year, I will be glad to be your cohart and help out.
I just LOVE win-win situations! :D

First rule:
"He who not pays goes without." You don't chip in you don't get squat and will wait until things are established here.
Of course, this all depends on the permit and number(s) allowed.
There's much to be investigated but ittiz DO-ABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Say only a pair is affordable and it's needed lots of folks pitch in, then plans need to be made on passing on babies - since you paid in. Things like if you have a line one of the pair would be compatible with, well you would prolly either get a baby or one of the pair could be leant/loaned to you for breeding.
You know. Gotta think this out.

First order of bidness is to think about the switch and exchange. THAT'S what's going to generate the xcitement. Figure out the logistics o'that, present it, ask for people to buy (some literally) in and THEN plan the meeting.

But James, what about lines? What about specific offspring from the snakes everyone has seen and said, "I WAN ONE!!!" It's not just about different species, but lines and maybe even specific snakes/offspring from specific people.
I'd buy in just to be able to say - as I don't breed - "I've got James' baby."

James, I don't think we will have any problems at all. If I remember correctly, you have stated Eastern aren't as readily available there as other species. If all goes well, I'll have Easterns for anyone wanting some. I'm having trouble getting "normal" Radix. The deal I was expecting to net me a pair last week fell apart....With a little luck we can have the male Florida Blue you need, etc.

It may be there are more 'wants' on the western edge o'the pond. That may be something to consider and the Yanks ante up more.
There's so much to this. There's no way to not succeed.
We'uns izz gonna come TOGETHER!
adamanteus
06-23-2008, 05:43 PM
I hear you..... But maybe 'the Europeans' don't particularly want 'this line' or 'that line', they don't really want a North Eastern phase sirtalis.
We have to give people what they want, or they just won't buy into it.
I know what Europe wants... I want it too... and it's Mexican.
infernalis
06-23-2008, 05:44 PM
Also from what I have seen, the Europeans have some of the sweetest bloodlines already there.
Alan Francis has some stunning animals, The prices per animal may be slightly higher, but the animals are beautiful.
So the price to import a realativly "normal" eastern would exceed the cost of the highest quality "morph" bred from stock already in Europe.
Garter_Gertie
06-23-2008, 05:47 PM
It can be worked on an looked into. Don't start tossing up road blocks at the outset.
We need to make that list of wants, ponder it, ask folks about it and see what we can do.
Maybe the Yanks pay more. (shrugs shoulders) Not everybody is going to go home happy. It's a case of those wanting, those pay. It's not a case of equal satisfaction. You may take home less than you bring. In that case, you'd pay less. Know what I mean?
We'll work on it. Stay calm. This is only the very first day of the ideas for The Grand Garter Gimme.

I didn't understand anything of what you said, Wayne. But that's fine. I will later. Don't need to xplain.
Another thing, James, it's not all of Europe I had in mind helping. Just those here. Granted, you guys - here - want something you can breed to satisfy the rest o'Europe. That's understood. But like I said, we may have to start small. This is only going to be the first time for this.

Wow..........
You've all been busy while I took an evening off!
This looks to be an interesting idea, but I have no inkling what will work for those of us in Canada. Ironically, even though we're attached to the USA, we sure are isolated in some ways!!
I haven't had a lot of luck finding out about breeders/selection over here.
Heard about Tetrataenia, and Flame Eastern, but nothing specific. And I think the prices are pretty high. So it sounds like we could use just about any species!
I would think there must be permits for bringing them from the states, after all, the pet stores manage to get them in. Unfortunately, my search skills are poor at best, so I'm not even sure where to look, but I'll try to find out something. I just know that permits etc. that are easy to get for the US always seem to be much more difficult here.
My only limit is that I'm not into breeding, so if Canadian members want anything specific, it would have to be another member who takes on that responsibility. But if there's a way to get certain specimens over here easier, then I'm in! Once they're here, they can be shipped all over the country.

Thanks James, They came from Scott Felzer, he could not get them to eat, I explained that I have much available foods to try, so here I am with 15 expensive het breeders to try and "Salvage"
Hopefully I succeed at least to a degree, and I know I'll probably beat myself up when or if I lose any along the way.
They are already a tad skinny compared to the ones I bought.
Good news is it has been raining a lot, so worms and amphibians are everywhere to gather, I have never seen a Garter turn down a newt....
The "wogs" are ready to drop tail, so tiny frogs will be abundant if I can beat the local snakes/birds to the catch..

Like patience... Well if we pre-order something and really show an interest and hope and pray all the babies won't eat maybe we'll get a whole boat load delivered to us too.

Yep, I counted 17....
I hope they all come around and eat.
I'll be a lot more optimistic when I see them eat like the other 4, Melanie, Magma & the radix pair eat like little pigs....
Oh and I forgot, but I wanted to make sure it was clear, I still had to pay for these babies, just not as much as good eaters. Scott has earned the reputation he has by treating his customers and his snakes well. He would not have been comfortable selling these babies to anyone unless they were going to have a 100 percent good experience.
Imagine the nightmare if Scott just sold these to anyone for his normal prices, and ten people had baby snakes die, his reputation would be soiled for a long time.

I figured you still had to pay...I was just joking around. :D;) I take it you have done business with Scott before, so he knows your track record, correct?

I found the secret weapon, they have been gulping like mad all day.
Now mind you these little guys have not yet eaten since birth, Red sided garters are hearty and these are no exception....:D

This one is surreal, the water is so clear, not only can you see bottom perfectly, the surface reflection is so un-canny, look close you can see my finger. (and the tadpole)

"I gather they're ALL eating?"
That I cannot verify without feeding them one at a time, there still very skittish, however, there was a feeding frenzy going on in that tank, and some 50+ of those baby toads are all ate and gone.

Should have seen how much work it was chasing tiny little toads that were tadpoles a couple days ago:D
We had these green aquarium nets, it was fun..
I got another bucket with some damp moss, and have toads for a little while.
And the best part, these are cleaner than any feeder fish you could ever buy anywhere, the water they came from is so clean I could bottle it.
I would have to be near death with thirst before I'd drink from petco's feeder fish display:rolleyes:

beware, those little brats will probably all be gifted with the Houdini talent baby garters seem to possess in too much abundance! Making enclosures escape proof isn't easy.

I hope Scott didnt sell all his red sided het anery babies to you! I've been waiting to get some red sided normal het anery babies from him too, along with an adult boyfriend for JC. (Been waiting since winter for him to have red sided het anery babies and I was thrilled when I heard some were born. After that, I've been waiting til he was sure they were eating well enough to be ready for the stress of home change, etc)

Although scott had started the boys I got last year, on pinkies, when they came to me they decided to try to starve themselves and I had to resort to feeding them earthworms to get them to eat. I would go to the woods and dig up small earthworms for them and still regularly go dig up small earthworms for them since thats all they will eat even now. I figure when they finally grow up, I'll try to trick them into scented pinkies.
There have been times when I was scared the smallest one might not make it, and I feed him every 3 days. He still is much smaller than his brother, but has better muscle tone than he used to have. The smallest one also learned a cute trick of opening his mouth when he sees me coming with a worm, and I drop the worm into his open mouth and he eats it.

Spiritwolf, I had announced my intentions to trade a few of these.
PM me if you have any snakes of interest, I'm quite open minded.
I just checked and all of them are twice the diameter they were on arrival.
They have all ate, and are now full, there are still little toads hopping around in there, so they are done eating for now.
We trapped some small shiners, and put them in the water bowl, along with baby night crawlers (not in the water bowl)
After I make sure they are chowing good, They will be ready to swap.

Unfortunately, I am not yet breeding, but in the stage of acquiring and waiting for potential breeding stock to grow up.
Would you consider selling two girls and a boy for a reasonable price?
I could also trade some unique beadwork or T-shirt painting for babies, in fact I could make a leather keychain with fringe, with your choice of garter done in beads coiled around it.
Below are some examples of beadwork and T-shirt painting (freehand drawn and painted) I've done so you can get an idea of my work.
