Couldn't tell you the age...I'm sure James knows quite enough to give you an accurate estimate. it might depend on the frequency of his meals and stuff like that...

Hey Kevin, I am in Canada..........and a few minutes away too. If your snake has babies, I'd love one with that colouring!
And by the way, I've got some little easterns with orange sides right now if you're interested. They're free. Just pm me.

thats a freaking awesome looking garter. I just picked up three erythyrystics from the columbia show today. They maybe yearlings the guy didn't say but I got a heck of a deal on them 35$ for all of them. I am sure I have one femalebut not sure on the others. Also with the eryth. gene bering codomanint I can try to breed them together and get a screaming red garter

06-22-2008, 06:21 PM
George is stunning, Kevin. I've never seen an Eastern around here with that colour yet.
And a 20 gallon is fine for two if that's all you can get. A bit bigger is probably better, but my girls are both in a 20G for now, and they seem to have plenty of room. Just give 'em lots to climb on.
Garter_Gertie
06-22-2008, 06:22 PM
Don't get me started, Kev. I'm of the opinion bigger is better, which - I don't think - is the majority opinion here. I'm going to be putting three into a 90 gal and I'm still worried it's not long enough. Yeah, they may be social, but I think they also stake out territories - or might. But I am going to go with all one gender so that will help.

06-22-2008, 06:27 PM
Actually, most of us here think a bigger enclosure is good. Sometimes though, you just have to make do with what you've got!;)
I am going to be getting a HUGE tank in the near future........... the lady who took 2 of my baby garters also has a 7 foot Redtail Boa who needs a bigger house soon, and she promised me his old one when she moves him! YAY!!!
crzy_kevo
06-22-2008, 06:29 PM
giving them lots to climb on wont be a problem at all lots of dead branches and stuff across the street but i was wonder what should i do to remove and could be insects from inside the dead branches

(wiping sweat from brow) WHEW! That's good to learn, Anji! MHS, Minnesota Herp Society, and kingsnake.com, on their forums they're always ragging at me that I'm using enclosures that are too big. Kenabec was going to go in the 90 gal but I think for the sake of the trio, the 90 would be better for them. And either a new 90 for Kenabec or just a wee titch smaller. But NOT a 20 gal like MHS is trying to tell me! He couldn't stretch out full length in that!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baking them in the oven for 1/2 hour at 350 should kill anything living in the branches.

Kev, here's the deal. Breed that GORGEOUS rusty snake, George? Then travel west to... West Ontario? By MN. Go to... To... Oh! Yeah! Gunflint Lake. In the winter. And I'll have worms, salmon, rabbit drumsticks, fuzzies, minnows... And I'll entice MY BABY across the border! :D Like, ittiz not smuggling or anything like THAT. The snakey came of it's own free will!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG-- can't you just SEE the ensuing drama---
Cops will be lined up on both side of the border. Sirens will be screeching, lights will be flashing. The whole area will be corndoned off with police tape. The SWAT team, the National Guard, the Canadian Mounties, the EPA will be there, as well as PETA. Police and television helicopters will be hovering with searchlights on. Bullhorns will be blaring and the cops will all have their guns drawn.
And in the middle of it all, crouched within inches of the border, will be little Gertie and little Kevin, with a teeeeeeeeny tiny itty bitty wittle baby snake creeping ooooohhhh so slowly toward the border... Gertie with rabbit legs and plastic bags of small minnows hanging around her neck, pockets overflowing with worms and pinkies... :D

yeas she is going to make me some nice babies if she does have the erythristic genes
the babies should come out erythristic too because it is co-dominant
if i breed her with the male flame im getting in the spring i should have quite interesting results

very nice colors, she is a beauty. babies?? oooohhhhhhh:D
crzy_kevo
01-07-2009, 03:54 PM
yes the first step will be if i find another erythristic in the area to possibly make the genes stronger and the colors be more vibrant if not then she will problably be crossed with a flame to see what results can come from that

Kevin, she is a beautiful snake. I would not breed her to a flame because that will overdo it and drown out her natural beauty! instead, I would find a male similar in coloration and reproduce that exact look that she has!!! Seek and you shall find. Look long enough and you will find the right male. I would say she's not an erythristic... ery's usually have sickening reds on them, in places you can see weird red blotches of it that stick out...and erythristic is technically not codominant as much as it is just a lot of red on a snake being passed on to the next generation in varying amounts. Flames are codom like, either they're flame or theyre not, but erythristics are kind of like a ring toss.... you could breed two nice high red snakes and get a bunch of babies with little or no red in them!! George here looks more like a pretty rusty red snake, her coloration is more uniform and natural looking, that if paired with the right male, will throw you a whole clutch of babies similar in color to her... and when they are born you should be able to see their color right away... with erythristics, those come out all brown and tan and you have no idea they are even special!!!! If you line breed her color traits the right way you will have your whole own flavor of special eastern!!!!

well you make a god point shannon but i have seen some other pictures of erythristic easterns that are the same colors as george such as this florida erythristic the colors of the scales are identical Google Image Result for http://gallery.kingsnake.com/data/364304_24_2008_Eastern_erythristic_Florida_strain_ adult_female_gravid_2-med.JPG (http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://gallery.kingsnake.com/data/364304_24_2008_Eastern_erythristic_Florida_strain_ adult_female_gravid_2-med.JPG&imgrefurl=http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php%3Fid%3D1514997,1514997&usg=__hf97_CNOnN2QeHVaAphz9PPDgUU=&h=450&w=600&sz=93&hl=en&start=12&tbnid=2_74Ecd2t4RSHM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Derythristic%2Beastern%2Bgarter%26gbv% 3D2%26hl%3Den)

well heck im not saying she CANT be ery, in fact all ery is, is high amounts of red pigmentation. people just take a snake with a lot of red on it and label it "erythristic"....what I am saying is... don't fudge her look with flame or something else, it will just kill it... definitely line breed if you can!!!! :D
