Hello everyone i found this site looking for information on which fish contain thiaminase and i found out that i can feed my new garter certain minnows and bass fillets since i fish alot
anyways onto my garter i found him just over a week ago when i destroyed his home moving a railroad tie to the fire pit in my yard
he didnt seem to like it very much so i made him a new home out of the old fish tank i had altho at the moment it is a bit small i will be going out in about a week to get him a much larger tank
im not sure exactly what breed it is so i will post some pictures

Hi Kevin, and welcome to the forum.:)
I think you have an Eastern... Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis. Perhaps if you told us where in the US you are, we could confirm this.
Here's a link to help with your Thiaminase question... http://www.thamnophis.com/caresheets/index.php?title=Thiamin,

Southern Ontario, I would say it's an Eastern then. Looks like a pretty one!

im sure its a male when i first picked him up he urinated and when i picked him up again it looked like the was sominthing sticking out of the cloaca i think he will shed in a couple weeks the scales near his tail are starting to dull

From the photo, I wouldn't like to guess at the sex. Sometimes, when a Garter musks you, they can evert a section of the cloaca... male or female.

oh i didn't know that so how would i be able to tell of the sex
and ive done some looking on google and it does look like an eastern at least the pattern does but all the pictures ive seen they are mainly green and it is brown but location is right
anywho thanks for all this information

Eastern are REALLY variable in colour... more than I could begin to list here.
If you could post a photo of the cloacal region and about half of the tail, taken from the side and also one from above, I think we could probably tell you the sex.

Iye-Yye-Yye-Yye! Don't start with the anthrapormorphizing (did I spell that rite?), Kevin! We've snake nerds here that really know their stuff - inside out, backwards and forwards. Real crainial folks that are logical. But even though they think with their minds - and not their hearts - we love them! They are the ballast for us creatives that think with our hearts.

It's nice to have you here. A very pretty garter. Hug and kiss her/him for me!
