Hello, Everybody!!!

Thanks to ssssnakeluver (another Utahn) for telling me about this site! Wow! lots of garter fans out there! I am sure I will learn a lot!

I found a wandering garter snake in my window well and kept it in a 10 gallon tank for about a week, but let it go because it hadn't eaten. I tried pinkies/a snail/a slug/a few live guppy babies in the water/pieces of trout and a few other things, but it wanted its freedom back, so out it went.

The real story is that my very sick cat was mesmerized by the snake and would spend hours watching it (never trying to attack it), even falling asleep by the tank. My loudly-whining old arthritic cat did much the same. Well, anything that the gravely-ill cat wants, she will get and the snake show kept my other cat from whining at my mother which kept her happy which makes me happy, so the long and short of it is that I needed a replacement snake.

Pet stores here don't sell garters (as ssssnakeluver can tell you), so I went on-line and found kingsnake.com and bought some captive bred 100% anerythristics from Jeff Benfer in Iowa (his snakes must be good luck--his house did not get hit by the floods) I liked the look of the red-sided garters and thought that I should have something a little colorful if I am going to be a snake guardian. I wanted these specifically because they were eating, would be parasite-free as CBB and would not go off food as a result of captivity. They do not seem at all bothered by the presence of the cats and are out and about as the cats stare at them, transfixed. I ultimately found the snake forums on kingsnake.com and ssssnakeluver told me about this site and here I am and I am really glad to be here! I want to learn as much as I can so I do right by my little guys.

They are 3 to a 10-gallon tank (3 tanks total, 3 females, 6 males total) and I have each tank set up with a container of aspen shavings and a plastic shoe box with water so they can swim if they want to. I wanted to keep the bottom clear so that when I put in the pinky parts, the snakes will not pick up any aspen shavings and choke or get an obstruction. So far, everyone has had a meal (I got them 6 days ago), and they all seem to be doing well. The tank tops have secure locking heavy-duty screen lids and they have under-tank heat pads, but it is really hot here right now (room reaching low 80's in the afternoon) so I have not turned the pads on yet.

OK, here's the REALLY STUPID thing: since my cats were so taken with these snakes, I though I would get some nocturnal ones, as well, so now I also have 3 Pueblan milksnakes. (I went from 0 to 12 snakes in 3 days). Does anyone have any milksnake forums they can also recommend?????

Thanks for having me here! Virginia

Hi Virginia, and welcome to the forum.:)
That's quite an introduction! It won't be long until people are asking to see photos of your new snakes, so here's how..

Welcome, you will love this forum! They will help you with everything you need. I have learned that there is a huge number of people who own other types of snakes and garters. Someone here can always (from my experience) answer your questions.

welcome to the forum!!!!!! garters in general take a week or 2 to acclimate to captivity...an adult can actually go a couple months without food with no ill effects! :D where in Utah do you live??? I'm out in Magna!

Wow!
You guys are really fantastic!
James: Thanks for the photo info. I am not very good with taking pictures, but I will try to take some over the week-end and post them if I am successful
Zephyr: I really feel welcome here now!
beaniesmommy:It is good to know I can get help from snake lovers of all kinds here. I am sure I will be needing it as my snake journey continues!
Don: WOW! You were right...GREAT WEBSITE!!!! I live in Orem, which is getting pretty urbanized, unfortunately. It could be that the wandering garter came from an orchard that they are pulling up to make room for more condos :( I wasn't sure how long the snake could go without eating (he was about a foot long, so I guess he knew his way around in the outdoors), but I was getting a little pressure from my mother and brother to put him back out as there were musical refrains of "Born Free" playing in their minds. Mom thinks the garters are cute and my brother is willing to "tolerate" them, but I think he secretly thinks they are kind of fun!
Anji: Yes, 0 to 12 is actually kind of intimidating at the moment, but with all of you folks, I think my new babies and I should do just fine!
Tami: Hopefully pictures this week-end. Looks like you have quite a handful of "critters" to keep you busy, too!

Thanks, all for the welcome! I am feeling at home on this site already!!! :)
Now I've got to work on using those little smiley-faced icons.....

James (Adamanteus)
Thanks for the GREAT website (I am presuming it is yours as you are the moderator, but then again I could be wrong). Stupid question, but I see you are from England. How did you get into garter snakes? I thought they are a North American snake. Do you have similar snakes in the U.K.? Just curious.

Virginia, it's not my site... I'm just one of the Moderators.
We have no wild Garter Snakes in Europe, as you say Thamnophis are only found in the Americas (not just North America) but they've been around the pet trade over here for ever.... A lifetime spent keeping snakes has meant that sooner or later I was bound to come across Garters....
I now keep nothing else. :D

Hi again, everyone!
reptileparadise/Stefan-A: Thanks for the welcome!
Stefan-A/gregmonsta: You are both better in that you have started off slowly. I have had animals of all sorts all of my life (and I'm pretty old at this point) so I am hoping I can do well by my new acquisition. I also have several herp. friends who can help if I get into trouble, but I wouldn't recommend this "total immersion" I wasn't sure how this was going to go, but I read that most garter species tend to be more gregarious than other snakes, so I thought I would get several. Well....if I was going to buy several, I thought maybe I should set things up so that I could have a couple of breeding pairs. So Jeff made me an offer for 3 pairs that I could not refuse. I sent him some extra money since the shipping activity was kind of unsettled due to the imminent flooding situation in Iowa and he asked if I wanted to be reimbursed with some extra males (how could I say no?). So what's a few extra snakes among friends, right. Let's hope the babies are OK with the idea, but as I said I got all them to eat, so I think things should go well.
GartersRock: I will be happy if I can breed mine eventually, but I glad I don’t have to worry about my colony growing any faster at this point!!!
James: So garters are not just in North America...See, I'm learning things already!!!:)

Welcome, Virginia! Well, if you're gonna do anything, do it RIGHT I always say. Why pussy-foot around with one when an even dozen is so much better? :D I *think* I'm planning on three at once - my first three - and just three makes me nervous. I can't imagine doing 12 rite outta the gate!

I think you'll like it here. I know I do. Welcome!
