View Full Version : Hello ;-) & Question
Hello:), I am new here and greet all garter snake fanatics.
Also I ask for the help in classifying 2 species:
First one: http://www.img.galeria.ultrahost.pl/uploads/58af657f39.jpg
Second one: http://www.img.galeria.ultrahost.pl/uploads/6011f4d8a7.jpg
I need to know species and sub-species;).
I apologize for mine mistakes and ask for the leniency. Mine English not is good:(.
Thanks for the help and I greet from the Poland :)

Hi Krzysiek, and welcome to the forum.:)
Your English is fine, I understand you perfectly well, it's certainly better than my Polish!
You have two Ribbon Snakes, Thamnophis sauritus (I believe), I cannot say the sub-species from the photos.... and Ribbon Snakes aren't my strong point. I'm sure someone will be able to help you though.
Edit: On second thoughts... that first picture could be T. proximus, the dark ventro-lateral stripe appears to be absent. Anyone?

The lateral stripe is too high to be T. sirtalis. Shame the picture isn't just a little sharper. I think she's gravid too!

Welcome here :)
I'm not sure about the first one, could be a T.sauritus indeed. But the second one is a T.proximus proximus, we have them as well. Yours is a very nice one with a lot of blue !! Telling from the picture I should say you have a pregnant female there ;) (or am I totaly wrong about the size??)

The second photo is DEFINATELY Thamnophis proximus orarius.
The first looks like Thamnophis sauritus (subspecies).

I think the first one is proximus, not sauritus, but I can't say which sub-species.....
I'm with Sabine on the second one...proximus proximus.

The first one: Leaning towards T. sauritus sackenii. The second one: T. proximus proximus.

I'm tending to lean towards proximus on the first one, but the second one has to be T. p. orarius; it looks exactly like my female and orarius is usually imported and sold as the "ribbon snake" in most stores.
**EDIT- If they were purchased from the same store, then the first one is most likely proximus as well.

Am I wrong in thinking that sauritus has the dark ventrolateral stripe.... missing in the pics of the first snake? I must admit I'm not confident on my Ribbon IDs.

I'll stay out of the ID game (other than to agree that they're ribbons) and just say hello, and welcome!!:D
Both snakes are very beautiful, by the way.

T. sauritus sackenii has a tan dorsal stripe that sometimes blends in with the base colour, which ranges from tan to olive
