....but do I post to many heh.

Yet another find in my yard right before dark last night. Can you tell what the sex is? Also I am really confused on snake types. Is this just an Eastern? I assume there are several different types of easterns? I see many different color variations. This one had really nice colors I thought. If I can find a similar male/female I might take on breeding next year.

Thanks man! So generally females have the longer thinner tail correct? What about scientific names? Do they change going into color variations?

Pic number 5 shows a fast taper to the tail which indicates a female me thinks ... about a year old maybe??

No Brett, males have the longer, more slender tails. Females taper off quite rapidly after the vent, as you can see in a couple of your pics.

Ok so was just out gathering up Grasshoppers for my Gecko and I heard the leave moving around.. I see a Eastern Garter and go over to get it however it would not come out of the rocks.. I pulled gently and no go so I begin to pull some layers of rocks off. And I find this little guy with about a 1/4 inch of the easterns tail down its throat.. The garter was easyly TWICE to THREE times his size. I was pretty neat to see but I saved the garters life and am now keeping the eastern milk :) Figured maybe some of you garter lovers would be proud of me.... Another happy garter in the wild :)

What do you suppose the "red area" is on top of his head? Results of a bad shed?

Actually Jade, Stefan is right.... You have both Grass Snakes and Adders in Derbyshire... you might struggle with finding the Smooth Snake though!

Never too many pictures!!!

And if you think about it, you may have saved that eastern too, what if it got say about 1/3 of the garter swallowed, and the garter were to take off? it could easily drag that little eastern around causing all sorts of esophagus damage. (a very ugly way to die)

BTW, you are an excellent photographer.

Wayne A. Harvey

Wow, Brett, that's amazing that you were there to stop that particular meal!! Very nice looking milksnake too.

Ok, madly scibbling directions to Brett's house... LOL!!!!! I'm way out in the woods, too, but I think my population of domestic animals is keeping the snakes further away from me. I've seen loads of black rat snakes while driving around, but still haven't seen the first snake of any sort around my house.

Wayne, good heavens, look at that fat frog... I still can't believe the garters get them down!!!

That is a wild snake, My girlfriend was walking out past the barn, and saw this. Came running in the house and got me. (Camera in hand)

Here is the same snake after.... We just left it alone to do it's thing.

Wayne

I have a picture somewhere of an eastern female who fought with a toad and won. However, it seems as if she busted a rib in the process and if I remember correctly her jaw was bleeding slightly.
**Wild snake, by the way. :P

Those are some beautiful snakes!! Good for you on saving the snake..or snakes for that matter. That would be nice to just step out of your house and find them...I usually drive a couple of hours to Albert Lea Minnesota if I want to see one for sure!! I occasionally find them around where I live but not too often!! I have yet to see a milk snake in the wild and I really really want to!! I will keep looking:-) Thanks for sharing your pictures..like someone else said..you can never post too many! :-)
