Gary's ravenous appitite wasn't there today for her feeding. She picked at her worms, but didn't eat them. She shed last week, and today she's rather sluggish. Think she's preparing for labor?

usually a shed and not-eating is a good indicator that your babies are on the way!! She looks more than ready!

Once the fun begins, how long typically does the birthing take?

Usually it does not take long at all... once she has that first baby... they just keep on coming out... about one every minute or so! At least, every birth I have ever witnessed happened like that.
They are so nonchalant about it too! One time I was sitting there feeding the girls, and I had a female's tank down at the time... and she raised her tail like she was about to poo and a baby just popped out! Just like that!! haha

Oh man! So this could also occur at any hour, or does this usually happen during the day? I know nothing as you can tell.

I don't think it would happen at night per say, but then again the captive photo period is way different than one in the wild...

Better get ready for her water to break. XD
Do garters even have one of those? o.o
Seeing as it's live bearing, not live birthing...

Around here, they mostly give birth when its nice and quiet in the reptileroom.

She's got a space all to herself, away from wandering cats, dogs and birds. She's hiding under her water dish again today. Just her head sticking out. These past few mornings she's busy looking for escape routes out of the tank. She gives up by lunch and settles in.

Hey Lumpy, your going to like this... Your gal looks like a Flame! (not a high red or super)
Since Eastern garters have such varied colours, the term "Flame" is simply a description, red sides and white dorsal (Most common with WC) and those can vary from hints to strong colours.
Maybe you will get lucky and produce some surprising babies!!:)
Best of luck..

No, not really Shanley. I'm anxious to see what's in store tho!
Wayne, Zephyr told me that her coloring is kinda specific to some Garters in Michigan. But, yup, she does have orangish coloring on her sides.

LumpThere's a distinct difference between flame and Northeastern color phases. The flame carries the color on the scales themselves as well between the scales; the Northeastern phase simply has the coloration on the skin between the scales with a small bit overlapping onto the scales themselves.

Now that is some great information!! (I have my fingers crossed with the baby that cost $100 from Scott Felzer)
Would you call this WC (I found it in my back yard) a flame? (Scott told me it's a flame)

I would need a good close-up pic of the side of the snake's body to determine.
