Snake pics last weekend

I found some more garters in a local park last weekend. One was a drooler.

Would I be correct in saying that at least in the top pic that's a gravid female?

I'm not sure. I'm kind of new at this.

Everyone, how do we tell males from females by looking at the tail shape? See first picture.

I say that, based on her (I'm assuming) size and her lumpy appearence by your right hand. I'm new to this too, so I could be way off...

Where are you finding all these snakes? I never see them and I'm by a river and in the woods all the time. You guys have better eyes than I do!

Since this is a public forum, and I don't want people going there harassing or killing the snake, I won't say. I hope you understand.

But I will say, where you find frogs, you will find snakes.

Yeah really lucky considering I haven't found anything yet this year.....;)

If I had to take a guess I'd say female and yes gravid..............:)

Nice finds and good photos as well. I also think the first one is a gravid female.I'm gonna go against the flow and say maybe. The bump looks more like a meal instead of babies, and sometimes after catching a snake I notice their vent and lower body swells before the discharge musk. Not saying she isn't gravid, but definitely not in the stage where you could tell.

Notice that the bulge is restricted to one area and the entire abdomen does not appear "bloated."

Looks like she's just puffed up, in my opinion. But indeed nice finds. :)
