Well, I took a stroll to one of the pet store chains to get a few things and make live more natural for my Eastern. I can see the 10 gallon I had on hand is going to need to be upgraded soon.

I thought I'd share my progress (and hers) with you all.
She didn't care to be disturbed! I haven't gotten bitten by her yet, but if intent could kill, I'd be a gonner! How hard can Garters bite?

Larger Garters can draw blood. But usually I find if you're not looking, you don't know they bit you!
I've rarely been bitten by my Garters, but when it does happen, I have to say rather painless in my opinion.

She looks quite happy with her new set up Lump :)
I re-did my garter's tank this weekend with a nice driftwood basking spot that I thought he'd love. It's in the same place in the tank as where he used to lie on top of his fake plants. Well, he got up there once. I came his way with the camera, it spooked him for some reason(never had a problem with me at the tank or the camera before?), he tried to take off and his back end fell off the driftwood, and he hasn't been up there since... sigh... I'm guessing he was a little spooky from the change of scenery and then felt too exposed up there? dunno... hopefully he'll finish checking out the new set up at some point...

just out of curiosity, what size viv will i need for 2 adult garters? im going to be building a new vivstack soon because vivs and tanks scattered all over the house is begining to annoy me. i want to know how big the viv needs to be for a couple of adult garters so im not going to be thinking about rehousing them again once they have a new viv :)
sorry for butting in on your thread Lumpy

well, wouldn't you be grumpy if you were carrying practically your own body weight around in your tummy? Haha, my gravid female cornsnake is due to lay anyday. She is the nicest snake in the world, but the past week she is downright nasty, i cant get anywhere near her without her trying to bite.

How hard can Garters bite?
Yesterday, I fed my 30" female eastern with tweezers. Apparently, she couldn't distinguish the difference between my hand and the fish. Either that or she just wanted to get me good. She latched onto my middle finger and tore two cuts, each about one inch long into the pad.
Mind you, this was a mixed feeding/defense response. In the field, I rarely get bitten when gartering; there defense responses seem to be all bluff and no bite. (Literally. :P)

The only time I've gotten bit was when Mayor was HUNGRY! The first time it happened I screamed, but it didn't hurt... just took me by surprise. He must have been famished, because he was snapping all over the place! I actually had to unhook his teeth from my finger. I showed my "war wound" around to my friends, and they teased me that it was just from a stapler. hehe.

I've been bitten three or four times, I think. Not properly though, just hard enough for me to register it.

Well, since she's new, I'm gonna give her a few more days before trying to pick her up. When I caught her out in the garden, I had work gloves on. I grabbed her right behind the neck, so she couldn't bite on anything, but she was giving her all in the attempt. I was kinda surprised, I thought Garters were much more placid, but I understand her fight or flight instinct.
