I just got a wild garter. Here's what they told me to do to tame them. Put them in their cage for the first 7 days, do not pick them up. Be sure to clean their cage each time it gets dirty. After 7 days, pick them up 2-3 times per day, for at least 10 minutes each time. The longer you handle them the more tame they'll get. I've been picking mine up for about 2 weeks now and he just stopped struggling in my hands yesterday, so he is making progress.

Remember they have a primitive brain and act only on instinct, there is really no intelligence there.

This we do not know.
However, after my science fair experiment, we will.

intelligence is relative
and like Kyle said - we do not know
there is no scientific evidence that animals have no intelligence - it's just a myth started in the bible
I've met humans who behave with less intelligence than the average garter

Hi, from Oregon, Lukeyk :)

Well, here's my evidence for no intelligence, and I also realize intelligence varies widely with individuals. After having my WC snake for 3 weeks and doing no harm to him, and when I pick him up my hand approaches him slowly in a non-threatening manner, he still does not realize I am not there to hurt him. Therefore, he has no ability to learn (so far).

That does not mean I will not treat him kindly. Any animal deserves respect, and I give much more respect to nature than the vast majority of people around me. (Note I said "around me", which does not include the people on this forum.)

We can start another thread on reptile intelligence if you want. I did not intend to hijack this thread.
