snake dens don't have a normal look. just a small hole in the ground in your yard is probably from a rodent of some sort. I have seen den sites in rocky areas and even under some peoples houses. I'm not that lucky tho...

I would not put water in it!! If you _have_ to see whats in there maybe use a small hand shovel and dig around the hole.. Star further out then slowly move in so you dont cut anything in half :p

I have no idea what a snake den looks like btw..

It certainly isn't a snake den, they don't make their own, they just use existing holes.

It's made by something that has strong legs and claws with which to dig through the dirt and toss it out of the hole.

All the animal holes I have seen (gopher, rabbit, ground squirrel) have dirt only in one direction coming from the hole, like in a spray pattern. This hole has dirt all over it, I have never seen an animal hole like this. Even insect holes have dirt in a single-direction spray pattern.

A crayfish hole looks like a chimney with balled mud on all sides of the hole. It can be 6-8 inches high or higher. This is when the crayfish come out of hibernation in the spring.

So, I think it is a man-made hole. Perhaps kids used a pole to make a hole, then scattered the dirt around the area.

bees here makes hives..

Honey bees make hives. Many species, including bumble bees, make communal nest in burrows which they excavate themselves. Everywhere.

I'm leaning towards arthropods of some sort.

I've got an informed guess on this one... ants possibly. Try leaving something sweet outside it and see if anything reacts.
