I've been hearing lately all kinds of things about lizards liking sandy soil. Such as, there are few skinks in our area because our soil isn't "sandy." Georgia has lots of lizards because it has sandy soil. But I just can't figure out the correlation. x.x

they prefer it! they burrow and lay their eggs in it. soil that isn't sandy doesn't provide for them the type of environment that they thrive best in. Sure, they -can- do without it, but apparently they do much better with it!

Sandy soil may hold humidity and temps more consistently and more to the standards that their eggs require. It has to, or there wouldn't be so many lizards populating it!

it does a better job yet than sand? I don't know!!! lol. Coconut fiber is not something that is ever available to them in the wild... and it's not a soil of any kind... so i would imagine it's moisture holding properties are a bit different than soil. I am not claiming to know why they thrive in sandy soil, I am merely speculating. Obviously, there is a reason!

Every gardener knows that if you want good drainage in your soil, you add sand. Thus, sandy soil should drain water better than soil that lacks sand.
