I know this is a garter snake forum, but I know some of you guys out there keep leopard geckos. Ok, so I finally got my leopard gecko to eat for me, (she eats at night when I can't see) but I'd like to know how much I should feed her. She's about 6 or 7 inches long, so I planned on 30 crickets a week. Does this sound about right?

is she giving you problems with eating? if you think she needs to pack on some pounds, try some waxworms! they love them, and they are a great food item. 30 crickets a week is fine, try to offer her a little each day or every other day. if you are able to, I would recommend mixing up the diet just a bit.. you can use waxworms as mentioned, SMALL mealworms (cut their heads of if they bother you), houseflies... you may find that your leo has a taste preference and gives a better feeding response on other insects!

Well, she's finicky now because I got her around 3 weeks ago. She's started to eat the crickets now, and I've been giving her around 4 a day with 2 of them dusted (they're already gutloaded). I haven't seen waxworms or mealworms around here though.

Have you got a picture of her? 30 crickets a week for one leo sounds a bit much to me...

I think that was probably a bit much too. I think I'll stick with more like 5 every other day. Here's a picture:

I usually give mine 4-5 "small" crickets he is about the same size as yours (as far as I can tell from the pic).
However now I give him 2-3 of the crazy flying grasshoppers.
I am still learning a bit though. I am sure better advise could be given.

that really depends on what size crickets you are using!

I have pretty big crickets. They're almost the length of the width of her head.

I don't know much about geckos, but 30 crickets that size is more than my Toadie eats in 3 weeks! And toads eat LOTS!!!
It might be a bit too many for that little guy!

Do you need to scent them somehow?

Remember that pinkies contain to much 'energy' for leopardgeckos. You could use pinkies about once a week. They are a good supplement to any diet.
If you'd only feed pinkies, you're leopardgecko will probably weigh 200+ grams in several weeks hahaha. No seriously, they should be used as a treat or to strengthen producing females
