Fantastic start, Stefan. I'll drop a couple of my photos in too. Then over time we can build up a fantastic photographic reference.

ssssnakeluvr
05-05-2008, 02:03 PM
I will add some photos also! :D Is there a limit on the number??? I want to make sure we have a good variety of pattern and color variation photos.

adamanteus
05-05-2008, 02:10 PM
No limit (at this point). Good stuff only please.... let's load it up!:D

Stefan-A
05-05-2008, 02:14 PM
Maybe it would be best at this point not to post multiple pictures of a single morph and only use pictures that represent the species or morph well.

Sid
05-05-2008, 02:21 PM
Great idea Stefan. This may be a quicker reference for many users here than the care sheets

Stefan-A
05-05-2008, 02:25 PM
Shots of supralabials, lateral stripes and whatever else that is typical to a species is okay too. :)

adamanteus
05-05-2008, 02:26 PM
That's the point..... anything that will help with accurate identification.

Stefan-A
05-05-2008, 03:13 PM
In my opinion, it would be best if all pictures posted would be the same size, just to make it easier on the reader. :) I think the point was to show the general appearance of the different species and morphs. I know many of you have some really nice photos, but it's not the right place to be artistic. ;)

adamanteus
05-05-2008, 03:15 PM
I agree, we need to be able to scroll through rapidly, without doing the side to side thing!!;):D

How about 800 x 600 pixels? Large enough to show good details on quality photos, but not too large either.

Stefan-A
05-05-2008, 04:03 PM
The gallery doesn't allow over 600pix wide and that's the "best" place to store them. Anyway, I don't think it's necessary to show every tiny detail. I think 'Monet' is a better solution than 'Rembrandt' in this case. ;)

adamanteus
05-05-2008, 04:30 PM
Is that Thamnophis rembrandtii?

anji1971
05-05-2008, 08:02 PM
How do I put pictures in there?? I have lots of Butler's garter pics.........

Stefan-A
05-06-2008, 12:17 AM
Post them in the gallery and just copy the link it provides. All you need to do, is to delete the img tags from the link so that the whole thing starts with http:// and ends with .jpg

anji1971
05-06-2008, 07:20 AM
Okey-dokey! I'll sort through my pictures and give it a try. I know the two of Twister I sent to the guy from the nature center here were good for ID. Does it matter if my arm is in one?

ssssnakeluvr
05-07-2008, 12:34 PM
I added a few photos.... hope they help... do we want to add morphs such as albinos????

Stefan-A
05-07-2008, 12:50 PM
I think it's okay to post amelanistic snakes if we already have melanistic ones. :)

adamanteus
05-07-2008, 12:53 PM
I think it's a good idea to post the various 'morphs', especially the naturally occurring ones. The library's primary function is as a guide to identification. So we need to see as much variety as possible, I suppose.

ssssnakeluvr
05-07-2008, 12:54 PM
ok, I will add more later...I am getting ready for work now.... I also included some close ups of the head for scale counts and such. :D

05-08-2008, 02:04 PM
Wow!

Is this 'findable' from, lets say, google?
I'll start uploading pictures tomorrow. Feel free to use some of my pictures...I've been up since yesterday morning 6:30 and I really need some sleep now...

This library looks great, but even on my high speed internet connection the page takes a while to load with all those pics. Can we make separate pages for each species? Some people still have dialup.

adamanteus
05-12-2008, 08:39 AM
You will find that most of the frequently viewed species accounts have photos in them.... or if you select the species you want from the library list, it should take you straight to it, rather than to the top of the page.

gregmonsta
05-16-2008, 12:01 PM
Need more pics ... :p there's still gaps in the list!!!

adamanteus

Stefan, I added 4 pics of our T. e. elegans. I tried to capture general appearance as well as a couple of close ups for identification purposes. Need to take a better full body shot, but it's the best I have for now. Feel free to edit and delete a couple if you feel it would work better for the library!

Confucious say "One can never have too many garter snakes!" :D

Confucious say "Man who cross mud puddle twice is dirty double crosser!"

It has been ages since I heard anyone quote "confucious say..."

Does this mean you are old enough to remember Charlie Chan?:o

Oh... I think that is a different thread!

Nice work, Sjoerd!
Anybody else keeping species which are not yet represented in the library, please post your pics in there... or ask Stefan or myself to do it if you're unsure how.

I found Sumichrast's garter photos on the internet a while back. I emailed the taker of photos, Carl J. Franklin, and got permission to put the photos in our library! Cute littel fellas!!! Dang I wish I could get some of them!!!!!

For the morphs, I already created an article and hoped to have a good overview on them in that article:

sorry
I've been so busy while not well, I've not even had a chance to look at the library
but I'll see what I can contribute
not that I think I've got much that's not already been covered by better photographers, but I won't know until I look

okay I looked - very cool
where can I get a sumichrasti spotted morph?
never mind
there might be a couple of pics I can add - gotta look

Indeed they are, as long as the clearly illustrate characteristics of the species they are representing.:)

so how does it work?
I just paste them in the library?
what if I have trouble deciding?
and they've got to be a particular size as well, right?
I've got some nice parietalis shots and a good one of my anery radix - in shed though

Stefan-A
05-20-2008, 02:40 PM
Upload them to the gallery (the best solution to the size issue, in my opinion) and just copy the link provided by the gallery, paste it in the right place in the article and delete the [img] tags from the link.

drache
05-20-2008, 02:43 PM
I've never been able to upload to the gallery in the past
can I just pop them straight in?
I guess I could try
these are the two parietalis ones I've got
which one do you like?

Just saying.:o

05-20-2008, 02:46 PM
okay okay
I'll scout for other stuff then

Stefan-A
05-20-2008, 02:47 PM
I remember seeing a picture with several parietalis with different patterns, can't remember whose it was. That one would still be a nice addition to the parietalis section in the library.

edit: Sjoerd. :D

05-20-2008, 04:18 PM
Reed, I notice you've posted a whole bunch of photos in the library taken by Gary Nafis.
Do we have his permission to use these pictures? If not, we'll have to take them out.

Sid
05-20-2008, 05:29 PM
James, I contacted Gary when we started the care sheet section and got his permission to use the photos that are his own. I need to go through my photos and resize the ones I have of his that are not yet covered if any. I also have Felzers permission to use his as long as we give him credit.

adamanteus
05-20-2008, 05:38 PM
That's great Sid (and Reed). I was just checking. We don't want to step on anybodys' copyright!
Eventually of course, we'll be able to replace all these 'outside' pics with photos of our own.;)

can you help me, James?

adamanteus
06-19-2008, 01:38 PM
If you post it in your gallery, it will automatically resize... then just add it to the library.

It is good to use our gallery for all your images, as the resizing makes photos easier to view in a post too.

I don't know how my photos view by others
I've totally given up getting photos into the gallery since my early days here when the attempts to do so had me in tears with frustration
I shall try to get this photo into the gallery if I must, but my bowels knot up at the very thought of it, and if it doesn't work the first time I shall absolutely not spent several days of back-and-forths with you and/or Jason trying to figure it out
I have a few hundred unread posts to catch up on . . .

okay
I tried it twice and nothing shows up in the gallery
here's the photo
if it's wanted in the library, somebody please help me get it there

I have a few decent ID pics of my couchii. How should I go about uploading them to the database? They are the same pics I used for verification and positive ID through the North American Field Herping Database...I have ventral shots, dorsal shots, labial scale shots and rostral scale shots...

Stefan-A
10-21-2008, 11:40 AM
It would be great to have that kind of photos in the Library. Upload them to our gallery and copy the link the gallery provides. I think you had to remove the img-tags from the URL before pasting them into the wiki article.

duh duh duh

This is great everyone. As someone who's jurisdiction restricts the species we can import, I find these photos to be really helpful in finding alternate species.

Keep up the good work!
