View Full Version : This is an irreplacable resource

This site is a very helpful, irreplacable resource. The last time I searched for garter snake info on the net and in the library I could find no other resource that has any variations whatsoever of the easter garter snake. All books and websites had only the typical black with 3 stripe variety of eastern garter snake. So this site, with all its variety of pictures should be a scientific treasure, something which should be archived and put into a safe place, especially the threads with all the pictures. Not even my local rangers or biologists were sure what type of snake I had.

Thanks again for a truly unique resource!

Thank you for contributing. :) This forum wouldn't be such an irreplacable resource, if it wasn't for the users. :)

Of course it wouldn't be a forum either without admins and moderators keeping it afloat.

I think we may have more Garter experience and knowledge gathered on this forum than can be found anywhere else. It has developed into a resourse that should be respected and used by professionals as well as amateurs. Our collective knowledge is, I believe, unrivalled. Our database of Garter photos must by now be the largest single collection..... and yes, it's a fun place to be, filled with warm, generous, friendly people. I live here!:)

Based on my research on the net, the variety pictures here are definitely unrivalled. You have the most variety of any other site.

You know, one of us should take on the job of sorting through, cataloguing and storing all these wonderful Garter Snake pics into the 'Articles' section, so we have a quick photographic reference and identification guide. Who's up for that?

It needs to be someone with a 'good eye' for a decent photograph, a knowledge of the Thamnophis species and sub-species and sufficient computer savvy to do the business...... I know who I'd choose!;)

Yah i think some1 should do that too, also include the area the species is found, and also if the type of garter is very variable such as easterns then the person doing it should post multiple photos showing the variations.

Distribution info is available in the species description sections.... I was thinking a pure photographic reference. But multiple pics for each species/sub-species/morph etc.... absolutely.

Thanks Don. I hope all our members would allow us to put their (good!) photos into this new 'Photographic Library'.... photo credit would be given of course. I think we should only use pictures from within the membership though... no random internet images.

Great news! Stefan has started compiling our Thamnophis Photographic Library.
It is in the articles section, in Wiki format, so please feel free to add your photos to it. May I just say this though.... please only use your own photos (we don't want to get involved in any copyright issues), be sure you know the species or sub-species you're posting and last (but not least) no offence intended but please only good quality images that can be used to help ID snakes. Thanks guys... and thanks Stefan.:)

So you should..... So let's see some of your quality photos in the new library, Shannon... no showing off, just good quality ID images!;)

honestly, when i found this site.... I was... ECSTATIC. I thought I was the only lonesome person in the whole wide world who is SO obsessed with garter snakes, besides scott fezler of course. My parents used to say to me.. Shannon, when are you going to stop looking for garter snakes and go out and catch a REAL snake... and I would always say but garters are the best snake there is!!! I use this site MORE than I do reptastic.com, and that's saying a lot, because I am an Administrator there! if any of you out there love other reptiles also, we at reptastic are building a community too. I would be, once again, ECSTATIC to see some thamnophis lovers over there :D

I don't think that site will ever be close knit like this one though. This site makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside... I guess it's because it takes a certain kind of person to love garters....

It's because we care not only about our Garters, but about each other....This site has something unique and indefinable. We are just a great community, and we will stay that way as long as I have breath in my body! The atmosphere on this forum is like nothing I have seen anywhere on the internet. We are special.

hahaha, Okay! is it okay if not all of them are on a nice background??? like, I take pictures of white posterboard sometimes, are those acceptable? If not, I will start taking garters outside for ID pics.

White background is just fine... the idea is a quick photographic reference for ID purposes. Your pics are some of the best on the forum... just choose the ones that will help with species identification (and variation within species), rather than the ones that make you look clever. We already know you can take clever photos!:D

Thanks for understanding, Shannon. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I think the new Photographic Library could be a real asset to the forum, if we do it right. So post in it!!!:D
