The pictures are a bit blurry, Jeanette, but they look like Thamnophis radix to me.
Do they look like the snakes in this thread?

Or this one

Four of the five snakes in those pictures are definitely T. radix, but one looks like something else, possibly a T. sirtalis.

jeanette

Kodak easy share.
havent a clue about its pixels or model, it took me 6 months to learn how to use my cell phone so i havent a clue with digital cameras. :D

I also think they are radix, but by seeing the last picture I'm not so sure about the lowest one.
Maybe after some more exercise ....

T. radix is a good choice, Jeanette. Absolutely my favourite Garter. I have 4.3 (4 males and 3 females).:D

I think the 'mystery' snake in the last picture is simply moving fast, and blurred the pattern out.

That's what I thought as well :D

So I think we agree...... they are both radix !!

thanks so they are quite common little guys :)

Yes, they're pretty common, but I don't think that detracts from their appeal.
Anything you need to know about them you can learn right here, Jeanette.... ask your questions!:)

They're very pretty snakes!
And if you think you're a little slow with technology, just ask everyone how long it took me to be able to post a picture on here. They were waiting, and waiting, and................:D

Very pretty Garters. Welcome to the forum, Jeanette.

wow you guys are great :)
i love my garters they are so different from other snakes, they are lightening fast and have a Big personality.
im currently feeding them pinky mice, is that ok? its what they were being fed when i bought them but ive been reading that a lot of garter keepers feed them fish and now know its something they eat in the wild.
how often should i feed them? they are opportunistic feeders, ive been reading, so does that mean they will eat whenever food is available?
dont want to over feed them and make them ill :S
thanks for all your help :)

adamanteus

Yes, pinkies are great. It is a very good idea (and it will save you some money) to vary the diet with 'safe' fish such as trout, and earthworms. Fish probably makes up about 60% of my Garter's diet.

earth worms, ok i bought some earthworms for my pyxie frog and its turned into a bit of a debate if i actually bought what i paid for, these worms look rather reddish in colour, so im not sure if they are a safe food source for my pyxie frog.

help!!!
are these a safe food source for garters?
im guessing if they are safe for garters they will be safe for my pyxie too :)

adamanteus

You bought earthworms???!!!
Hard to tell from the photo, but if they appear banded they're not safe. The ones you dig up in the garden are perfect.

jeanette
05-02-2008, 04:13 PM
they are not banded, ive just been told they are what is classed as nightcrawlers and safe for my pyxie lol
yeah i know i bought them :S
but it was from a bait shop and i was out on my way to my reptile supply shop to get crickets and pinkies anyway.
secretly i just hate digging lol

Don't feel bad. I buy them from my local bait shop too from time to time. Well, I buy nightcrawlers from them because they're bigger and juicier. :-)
